Blurb: Trying to jumpstart his waning career in travel and nature journalism, Jim Faulkner jumps out of a plane in the middle of the night to get the inside scoop on werewolves in Connor’s Crossing, Wyoming. Unfortunately, he lands in a tree and gets stuck. His rescuer is a mysterious and solitary man living in a cabin in the woods. Although Jim feels an odd connection to Dakotah, Dak’s silence is all but hostile.

Jim won’t give up though—he finds ways to be around Dak, both for the bond and his belief that Dak is a great source for wilderness information. As Dak continues to dismiss him, Jim is suddenly surrounded by progenitors—the most powerful werewolves in existence—who all seem to want Jim as their mate. After one abducts him, Jim has to fight for his freedom and for his one true mate. No matter how reluctant said mate is.

Review: This story is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone. Jim is a nature journalist looking for one more story before he gets to old, looking for werewolves in Wyoming seems like the story to hunt but landing in a tree is not his idea of fun but being rescued by a sexy man is. Dax is much more than just a werewolf he is a progenitor, one of the originals who created the werewolves and after many years alone he has no intention of mating again but when Jim lands in trouble Dax has a choice to make, accepting Jim as his mate or turn his back and let someone else snatch him up.

This is a great addition to the Lifting the Veil series and is loosely connected to both The Wolfing Way and Hunter’s Moon. When Jim first meets Dax, he only has one thing on his mind and that is his story about werewolves, but it isn’t long before he feels drawn to Dax and begins to fight tooth and nail to get Dax to pay attention to him. Dax isn’t an easy man to live with each of his mates has been dissatisfied and eventually left him, so Dax would rather be alone but Jim gets under his skin and unless Dax opens his heart he could just lose Jim for good. Jim is Dax’s mate but he soon discovers that the progenitors have a different set of mating rules and if Dax doesn’t claim him one of the others will, whether he wants to or not.

This story is well written and flows wonderfully. There’s drama that blends in well and all the characters make the story come to life. I quite liked this story and found it interesting as more was revealed about the werewolves, the idea of the progenitors and their matings adds a new view to werewolves and stubborn progenitors leads to some excitement as well. We meet other progenitors other than Dax and it would be interesting to see their stories in the future. Jim’s forgiving nature was a blessing for Dax when he finally pulls his head out of his ass, but damn Dax was annoying in his stubbornness. Jim and Dax do make a great couple and they are super-hot together when they finally work things out.

I recommend this to those who love fantasy and paranormal, a new twist with werewolves, difficult relationships, fighting for what you want and overcoming obstacles for love.
