In a world where the Veil lifted a decade ago and exposed mythical beings living among humans, Sam faces a big challenge as the mystery surrounding the case deepens.

The inheritors of Mo’s fortune—the uncle, the butler, the nanny, and the bodyguard—all possess secrets, and some are willing to protect them at any cost. The trouble is that Sam’s partner and lover, Rex Ford, is suddenly under suspicion as well.
Clouded by doubt, Sam continues to search for answers as tapestries of crimes begin to unravel and powers beyond his imagination are unleashed. If Mo endured horrific nightmares about monsters under his bed, there’s no telling what dangers await a nosy PI. What dangers lurk in this darkness? Sam is about to find out.

Review: This story is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. Private Investigator Sam is surprised when he receives a letter hiring him to investigate a suicide because the person hiring him is the one who died. As he digs into the circumstances of Mo’s death, he discovers the secrets of those set to inherit Mo’s fortune, but what worries him most is his own lover, Rex Ford, is named in the will. Sam finds himself dealing with more paranormals than he ever expected, and just what do they have to do with Mo’s death?

First, let me say that I love this series, each book is different from the one before, and you never know just what sort of paranormals you will come across. Sam and his lover Ford have been together for five years ever since Ford awoke after being shot, but as Sam investigates his new case he discovers something he could never have imagined. The investigation has Sam delving into the family of child genius Mo Chase, Mo was plagued with devastation from an early age with the death of his parents and then the loss of his twin brother and Sam discovers someone is using it as a ploy for Mo’s death.

We are given a solid background of Sam and Ford’s relationship but the story isn’t centered on them, it focuses on Sam’s investigation and his discoveries but that doesn’t mean we don’t get to see plenty of action between the two men because we do and they are HOT! Following Sam as he puts together the flimsy clues he discovers is interesting and we see how Ford has some explaining to do, but their relationship is strong and Sam can’t really complain as he got the man he really deserved.

I really enjoyed this story especially the twist near the end, I love how we are introduced to more paranormals who were revealed after the Veil fell, and not just the normal paranormals like shifters or magic users. Each story brings a new set of paranormals. And in this one, we are introduced to the Gods of old. I can’t wait to see what paranormal we get to see in the next Lifting the Veil story.

I recommend this to those who love paranormal stories, private detectives solving mysteries, great characters and a great storyline, twists that surprise and a very happy ending.
