Nothing Special

by

Jay Northcote

Noah thinks he’s nothing special. Average height, a bit on the skinny side, and cute but rather geeky, he’s relentlessly ordinary. He certainly doesn’t expect to be noticed by Sol, the gorgeous dark-haired stranger Noah sees on his commute home most days. But when Noah’s friend, Dom, persuades Noah to take a huge risk in a bid to get Sol’s attention, things turn out better than Noah dared to hope. Noah and Sol start dating, and much to Noah’s surprise, his feelings seem to be reciprocated.

But Noah’s insecurities make him doubt Sol. He doesn’t believe he’s interesting enough or sexy enough to hold Sol’s attention, and as Sol tries to get closer, Noah’s instinct is to pull away to protect himself. If their relationship is going to survive, Sol needs to convince Noah that he sees Noah very differently to how Noah sees himself. Because to Sol, Noah is something very special indeed.

Excerpt

Sol and Noah sat on the grass, cross-legged with their knees touching. They were quiet for a moment as they ate their ice creams.

“Mmhmm,” Sol hummed. “I never get bored of chocolate Cornettos.”

Noah watched Sol’s pink tongue as he caught the dribbles on the side of the cone where the ice cream was melting fast in the heat.

“You’ve got chocolate on your chin.” Noah touched his own chin, trying to show Sol where.

“Here?” Sol rubbed the wrong side.

“No, I’ll get it.” Noah used the pad of his thumb to catch the smear of melted ice cream and brought it to his own lips. He met Sol’s gaze as he did it, and the intensity there made Noah’s stomach swoop. If they’d been alone, Noah would have kissed him, but he wasn’t sure how Sol felt about that level of PDA—especially in front of his sister. So he turned his attention back to his ice cream instead.

About Jay

Jay lives just outside Bristol in the West of England, with her husband, two children, and two cats.

She comes from a family of writers, but she always used to believe that the gene for fiction writing had passed her by. She spent years only ever writing emails, articles, or website content. One day, she decided to try and write a short story–just to see if she could–and found it rather addictive. She hasn’t stopped writing since.

Review: Noah rides the tube home every day while being mesmerized by one of the other passengers. The sexy stranger with the dark hair pique’s Noah’s interest, but he’s too shy to approach him. On one of these rides home Noah takes a chance and takes the empty seat next to the guy and sees that he is reading a particular column in a local paper. On whim and a dare from his best friend, Noah puts an ad in that paper, an ad telling the guy that wears the Zoo uniform that he is interested in a date.

Soon after the ad runs Noah finds himself face to face with the guy again, but this time they talk, and the guy says yes. They go from strangers to first date to hot and heavy in a very short period of time. And Sol is perfectly happy with keeping the tempo, asking Noah to move in with him. But Noah is wary of moving too fast, to spite the fact they’ve been flying around at light speed already. Will a failed relationship from the past bleed over into the present and ruin any chance that Noah and Sol have at happiness?

The majority of the book felt very rushed, like I was reading a movie in fast forward. I suppose it could play into the concept of the book, that the relationship between Sol and Noah was always moving forward at a break neck pace. And at times the sexual aspect of the book came across as a YA book, with other situations of course being more descriptive, this confused me. Don’t get me wrong the story was fast but fun and there was the light hearted romance angle to it that left me with a smile on my face at the end. And I liked how the author tied in the start of the relationship with where the ML are at a year later at the end.

If you are looking for something fun and romantic with a definite happy ending, then this is the book for you.
