Vina Interview

Today we interview Vina from the writing duo of Vina Grey and Viki  Lyn who write the Orbus Arcana series. Welcome!

You must love romance novels. What are some of your favorite books or authors?

I worship at the altar of Georgette Heyer. I don’t think I will ever write historical romance because I could never achieve such heights — it would either send me into a hyper-critical tailspin or be a pale imitation of the inimitable Heyer! I also love Mercedes Lackey and her fantasy series. In fact, if I could, I would live in Valdemar. More recent authors whose worlds and characters I find so lovable are: Nalini Singh and her Psy Changeling and Guild Hunter series; Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark; JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. My favorite alpha males — that’s a tough one: Hawke from the Psy Changeling series; V and Wrath from the Brotherhood (I walked around ending every other sentence with ‘True’ a la Vishous until my family was ready to muzzle me!); Raphael from the Guild Hunter series; Dragos from the Elder Races series. And, Merrick from All That Bleeds by Kimberley Frost – there was something so “emotionally fearless” about him that stayed with me for a long time, and those letters between Merrick and Alissa -wow- ever read a book and think ‘wish I had written that?’

What’s on your nightstand right now?

My iPad; a ceramic piece that says creative minds are seldom tidy; a tube of hand lotion; sundry pieces of silver jewelry that I only remember to take off after I get into bed; a time-piece (that’s a clock in the American vernacular); a piece of pink quartz that the lady at the crystal shop said I needed to soothe my heart chakra…you did read that part about creative minds, yes?

What made you decide to write in the paranormal genre?

I like the idea that there are things and people and powers we don’t understand or can’t explain away. Dealing with science all day, I work with hypotheses and statistics. Writing about the paranormal world is a great way to escape that. Plus, I can create my own world with my own rules. When I am Queen…ahem…you get the idea.

Which character did you like writing about the most, and why?

This is the one book where I just cannot pick a favorite character — no truly — every other book I could probably pick one. But here, Vince, John, Angelo – they were all so much fun to write. Each is unique, as are their quirks and voices.

About Viki & Vina

Vina Grey

Vina GreyI now delight in writing romance after a couple of detours to be a nurse and an academic. There’s something so intrinsically good and uplifting about two people finding each other, that two-step before the happily ever after – just has to be the best story ever. Throw in some paranormal elements and I’m in heaven.  Every year I indulge in another love of mine–traveling. New cultures, food, sights, languages — all serve as settings for the cast of hundreds in my head. Ergo — when worlds and mythologies collide — its like manna to my muse.

Review: Vincent Kamateros was exiled from the vampire world to the human world and has been making his living as the owner of a cupcake bakery, as long as he abides by the Vampire High Councils rules he is left in peace. When his landlord crashes into Vincent’s bakery it brings the suspicious Detective John Reeder into Vincent’s life and Vincent is instantly smitten. John is investigating the death of Vincent’s landlord and John is suspicious of Vincent, he knows the man is hiding something. John is also closeted but the sexy Italian baker tempts him like no other, but there’s no way John can give into the attraction as he fears the rejection of his family, and Vincent is a murder suspect.

This is a pretty good vampire story where the vampires exiled to the human world have been stripped of their powers and forced by the Vampire High Council to abide by strict rules. Vincent is one of those vampires, exiled when he confessed to a crime he didn’t commit; he left behind his life as a Lord Heir (heir to the Vampire throne) and is now living as a simple baker. When a dead man crashes into his bakery it brings John into his life and Vincent wants him something fierce. But life won’t make it easy for him as John is deeply in the closet and very suspicious, he also has the J (Jurisdictio, vampire justice committee) wanting something from him, and it’s forbidden for Vincent to get involved with a human. John fights his attraction to Vincent for two reasons, one, he has an idea of what he wants in the future and it includes a wife and children, and two, he knows Vincent is hiding something from him.

We get a great deal of Vincent’s background as the story progresses so we don’t feel lost about the position he is in or why, and when you do learn why he was exiled you can’t help but admire the sacrifice he made. I’d also like to point out that these vampires can be out in the sun, but makes their eyes water 😉 . John is a pretty normal man who is just hiding his sexuality, his attraction to Vincent throws him off balance and eventually has John questioning if he really wants to hide in the closet. I loved Vincent from the start and his flamboyant friend/watchdog Angelo, John was a little harder to warm up to because at first it seemed like he was determined to try to punish Vincent because John was attracted to him. John does come across as a man denying himself, he really does know that he doesn’t want a woman but he can’t bear the thought of hurting his mom by admitting he’s gay, meeting Vincent pushes him to make a choice so their ‘tentative’ relationship really is a rollercoaster ride as John fights with himself.

I enjoyed this story and thought it was well written, the characters are interesting and the vampires have a very appealing background, it makes you want to dig into the vampire world and discover more. Vincent’s and John’s relationship is very hot, they make an explosive couple but they still have much to face and secrets to be revealed… this makes you want the next book as you know that there is much potential for danger. The murder storyline was a bit of a let-down though especially as John was making such a big deal out of it and it then basically fizzled out, it made a great meeting point for Vincent and John but just lacked for it to have been dragged out so much.

I recommend this to those who love noble vampires, closeted detectives, an attraction that just won’t quit, great characters and a tentative new relationship.
