Rattlesnake

by

Kim Fielding

A drifter since his teens, Jimmy Dorsett has no home and no hope. What he does have is a duffel bag, a lot of stories, and a junker car. Then one cold desert night he picks up a hitchhiker and ends up with something more: a letter from a dying man to the son he hasn’t seen in years.

On a quest to deliver the letter, Jimmy travels to Rattlesnake, a small town nestled in the foothills of the California Sierras. The centerpiece of the town is the Rattlesnake Inn, where the bartender is handsome former cowboy Shane Little. Sparks fly, and when Jimmy’s car gives up the ghost, Shane gets him a job as handyman at the inn.

Both within the community of Rattlesnake and in Shane’s arms, Jimmy finds an unaccustomed peace. But it can’t be a lasting thing. The open road continues to call, and surely Shane—a strong, proud man with a painful past and a difficult present—deserves better than a lying vagabond who can’t stay put for long.

Interview

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Kim Fielding, author of Rattlesnake.

Hi Kim, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

What’s the best line you ever wrote?

I am especially pleased with two of the lines in Rattlesnake:

“But death wasn’t new to him by any means. It just didn’t usually ride shotgun.”

And

“But he’d come to realize that drugs were the most toxic form of hope, lasting only a short while before leaving you worse off than before.”

Do you listen to music while writing? If so, what kind?

I do most of my writing at the kitchen table, with my family ebbing and flowing around me, so I don’t generally listen to music. But during those precious times when I have the house to myself, I turn to my playlist. It’s eclectic. Old-school punk, world music, blues, dinosaur rock. Some of it is pretty unconventional, like Bosnian reggae/punk.

Sometimes what I listen to is influenced by what I’m writing. During Rattlesnake, I listened to a fair amount of Johnny Cash and Chris Isaak. My Bones series soundtrack involved a lot of Decemberists and Pink Martini, since they’re both from Portland, where the books are set. But then I discovered a song called “Chateau” by Brute Chorus that was just perfect for the Bones guys. I love that song.

Oh, and one song that always gets me in the mood for some m/m romance? Cosmo Jarvis’s “Gay Pirates.”

If your book were made into a movie, what actors would you like to see star?

Oh, I usually stink at this. Can I pick actors for another book? For Motel. Pool, I want Adrien Grenier and James Dean (because I can bend space and time and bring back the dead, of course). For my Ennek trilogy, young versions of Rufus Sewell and Paul Bettany.

I just asked my husband to help me cast Rattlesnake. He suggested Jason Bateman for Jimmy. Yeah, I think I can see that, although Paul Newman would have worked too. We mutually decided on a skinny version of Bradley Cooper for Shane.

What genres do you write in?

All the genres! My most common genres are fantasy and paranormal. But I have several contemporaries, including Rattlesnake. I have a historical—which may be the only existing m/m romance set in 15th century Bosnia—and a sci fi. I have a thriller of sorts (Venetian Masks). I’d like to try my hand at mystery one of these days—something noirish, I think. And maybe a cop story. Or firemen, because my husband works for a fire department so I can do research.

Where and when do you prefer to write?

I take my writing ops whenever I can get them. I have written in planes, trains, and boats in well over a dozen countries. I have written in doctors’ waiting rooms, cafés, and spelling bees (my older daughter came in 6th in the state!). I will sneak a little writing in during boring meetings or while I’m sitting in my parked car, waiting to pick up the kids after school. Probably my favorite place to write is hotels, I think because there are so few distractions. But I do the bulk of my work in the evenings while sitting at the kitchen table.

Their waitress appeared beside the table. “Anything else?” she asked Jimmy.

He didn’t want to go just yet. But his belly was full, and any further conversation with Shane was probably going to frustrate him. Already Jimmy wanted to reach across the table and touch Shane’s hair, maybe run a finger across his scars. “Just the check. Thanks.”

“Mine too,” Shane said, but his thoughts were clearly elsewhere. As soon as she took their plates away, he leaned forward. “You don’t have to go, do you? I mean, you’re not, um, on the run from the law, are you?”

That made Jimmy laugh. “I’ve done some stupid shit, but never bad enough to make me a fugitive.”

“If I Google you, I won’t find you on the Ten Most Wanted list?”

“Afraid not.”

“So.” Shane traced his finger through a bit of spilled sugar on the tabletop, worrying at his lip and not meeting Jimmy’s gaze. He finally looked up again. “So you could stick around here for a while. If you had a place to stay and a job.”

God damn it! You don’t hope. You don’t want. That only leads to destruction. But Jimmy felt himself nod. “I could. For a short time.”

About Kim

Kim Fielding is the bestselling author of numerous m/m romance novels, novellas, and short stories. Like Kim herself, her work is eclectic, spanning genres such as contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, and historical. Her stories are set in alternate worlds, in 15th century Bosnia, in modern-day Oregon. Her heroes are hipster architect werewolves, housekeepers, maimed giants, and conflicted graduate students. They’re usually flawed, they often encounter terrible obstacles, but they always find love.

After having migrated back and forth across the western two-thirds of the United States, Kim calls the boring part of California home. She lives there with her husband, her two daughters, and her day job as a university professor, but escapes as often as possible via car, train, plane, or boat. This may explain why her characters often seem to be in transit as well. She dreams of traveling and writing full-time.

Review: The first line has you hooked… It started with a dead man… all the way to the very last line. I couldn’t put it down.

Jimmy Dorset lives on the road. He travels as far as his clunker car will take him, stays until he has enough money to get on the road again. He is never in one place long enough to make a home or life. He feels no one wants him or needs him. Then one day he picks up an old hitchhiker that wants to go to Rattlesnake to try to make amends with his son. When Tom dies Jimmy sees so much in him he decides to deliver Tom’s letter in person to Shane Little.

Shane is a bartender of the Rattlesnake Saloon in his Aunts motel. Shane has his own story though very different from Jimmy’s they are two souls meant for each other.

Jimmy had no idea picking up a lonely, cold hitchhiker would change his life so drastically.

This book gave me chills from opening till I finally finished it (in one sitting). It is such a poignant story. Powerful with some soft undertones and I found it very romantic as well.

I adored both characters. Jimmy the loner–I still loved him and felt so deeply for him. Who couldn’t love Shane? He is the town’s sweetheart. Everyone loves him and is protective of him, even though he isn’t perfect either. I think I loved most the fact these two characters are not perfect in any way. Not looks or personality.

Though Jimmy fights his feelings tooth and nail, sometimes fate is stronger than your own will. I will admit I shed a few tears along the way. This book is in my favorite list of this year as long as Jimmy and Shane.

If you love modern stories set in old-west towns, broken men, some angst, romance, and some moderate, sensual, mansex this is definitely for you.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good M/M romance and something a little different.
