Tina chats about being a newer author breaking into the mm paranormal genre
When I first started writing, my professor said that we should write about what we know first followed by what we ourselves would want to read. That’s simple. Paranormal. That’s not saying that I would never write in another genre because there’s always something in my back pocket. But it’s what I’m drawn to.
There’s something a little magical about this genre. It can be anything that I want it to be. A world that I create and where certain rules apply. I enjoy taking much of the traditional rules of a particular universe and then adding my own twist. I want it to be enjoyable. I have an inquisitive mind and I like to add my own version of “well, what if” and figuring out where that’s going to go from there. In real life, I’m not much of a believer in magic or the occult but it’s perfectly acceptable in a book. It’s an escape, another realm where anything is possible, and maybe that’s why I like it so much.
My sister has always been obsessed with all things Halloween, dark, and spooky. It just seemed to be the perfect genre for me since I watched scary movies and read scary books throughout my childhood and adolescence. It’s also fun to talk with other authors in the same genre to compare universes and rules.
As a reader, I love the paranormal genre and love to find anything I can get my greedy little hands on. I don’t think that a genre can be overly saturated. When a reader finds something that they love or a voice that they connect with then magic happens, a connection that will create a beautiful relationship.
So far, I’ve been drawn to the more “traditional” types of paranormal, namely werewolves and vampires. I have a couple more stories in my pocket for something a bit different. More scary I think. I love to mix romance and thrillers or horror together. Nothing brings people together better than the fear of death. I’m not so sure about some of the other shifter type stories with critters. I haven’t read them so I won’t knock them but it takes a brave author to venture in that realm!
I’m hoping to reach out to readers of paranormal that love old school thrills and rules while breaking a few stereotypes. And at the end of the day, I hope to leave a smile on your face with a well-deserved happily ever after.
Excerpt:
Jason allowed himself to run that night. Elation filled him making it easier to relax and allow his wolf to flow into his mind and body. The shift was seamless, years of transitioning helped his wolf to take control in under a few painless minutes. Jason knew of wolves who could never shift because the pain was so intense. It was unknown what the cause was but some insisted that it was because the Shifter’s true mate had never been found and the man could not control the beast inside of him.
The old wives’ tale had haunted Jason especially as years passed without locating his mate. Now that he knew Eric existed, it was one less thing to worry about. Now he could focus on worrying about Eric finding out he was a Shifter. Eric’s acceptance. If the two would find love and happiness despite fate playing a factor, then, and only then, could Jason think about starting a family with Eric. Maybe he was jumping the gun, but he had always wanted a man to love and a family to care for. Was it too much to want? Shouldn’t he be satisfied with finding a mate? All of this thinking and stress was weighing him down. Yes, he had found his mate, but would Eric want Jason?
His legs pumped harder as he made his way across hills and through forests with large trees reaching up towards the skies. It was not the familiar woods of his home on the Pack Lands but it felt good to stretch his limbs, pull deep pulls of fresh air into his lungs, and feel the wind tickling through his fur all over his body. With a grin, he imagined his large bear of a mate with sexual wants that matched his own.
About Tina
Tina is a retired Air Force brat and has lived in several states as well as a handful of countries. She has always had a soft spot for literature and is a voracious reader. When she isn’t writing, she can be found cuddled up with a good book. Though Tina adores a thrilling novel with sappy lovesick heroes, she is terrified of things that go bump in the night. This makes for quite a complicated relationship with zombies, something that she just can’t get enough of.

Review: Jason, a wolf shifter leaves his west coast pack in search for a mate. He meets Eric, a human, while working out at a gym and discovers he’s his mate. Eric asks him to lunch so they can get to know one another
Interesting story about how shifters and humans, changeless, live in a world where acceptance is rare. Shifters rarely leave their own lands. Eric wants a permanent relationship as he’s tired of playing the field and being played himself. Jason feels the same so they begin seeing each other. This is a very sweet story of getting to know each other, revealing secrets and acceptance. Eric and Jason’s intimate scenes are hot. Good read.
It definitely appeals to me!
I’m definitely intrigued!
This looks like a good one. Congrats, and best of luck with it!
any of the big cats would make a great mate
A wolf would be the best since they are all about mates and family.
