The promise of a dream job lures Murphy to Tampa, but he arrives to the rude awakening that the offer is on hold. Now he’s got two choices: slink back to Michigan with his tail between his legs or stay and look for work. Things perk up when he goes into a coffee shop and learns the owner is looking for someone to renovate the apartment above it. He happily takes the job, only later realizing he’s met Joe Sterling, Kaffeinate’s proprietor, before… when they hooked up at a club Murphy’s first night in Tampa.

Murphy and Joe are both proud, passionate, and outspoken. Neither is looking for a relationship, though they can’t deny they go together as well as coffee and doughnuts, in spite of their tempers. But that’s before Joe learns Murphy will be working for the corporation he believes is harming local businesses and the environment—and if Murphy will be supporting it, Joe wants nothing to do with him, dooming any possibility of an unexpected happy ending.

Murphy took care of his morning needs, washing and rubbing one out at the same time. He’d always been really good at multitasking. Now that some of the stress—or rather, the pressure—was relieved, feeling much better than when he’d woken. He pulled the curtains, dropped the towel he’d secured around his waist to the floor, then kicked back on the bed with a newspaper. He flipped to the want ads and found the section for employment. He bypassed most of the ads, knowing some would take weeks, maybe even months before he’d get a callback. Plus, he was sure that once things were worked out on BMC’s end, he’d be working a steady, well-paying job soon enough. What he needed now was something quick and temporary. He scanned until he found the ones seeking waitstaff and bartenders.

Murphy laughed out loud when he came across an ad seeking a bartender at the Flaming Flamingos. He was definitely a little too macho to be sporting pink and sparkles. He drew an X over it.

His cell chirped, and he picked it up from the nightstand. He checked the display and accepted the call. “Hi, Mom.”

“Hey, sweetie. How’s it going?”

“Ran into a bit of a snag, but other than that, I’m good.”

“What do you mean snag?” she asked, a hint of concern in her voice.

Twenty-six years old and Mom still fretted and fussed over him like he was nine. “Lighten up, Ma, I’m fine, although I find myself jobless at the moment.”

“What are you talking about? I thought everything was set for you to start Monday?”

“Yeah, I thought so, too, but I guess there was an issue with permits or something.” Murphy sighed. “I’m sure they will be up and running soon.” I hope.

“I told you it sounded too good to be true. You need to get your butt in that car and get back home. Vlasic is hiring.”

“Mom, seriously, I’m not going to come back and take another factory job, and I damn sure ain’t taking one that makes me smell like pickles.”

“I thought you liked pickles?” She chuckled.

“Ha-ha, I do, just not the stinky vinegar kind.”

“So what are you going to do?”

“Right now I’m going to take my newspaper and head down to the local coffee shop and see if I can find a job. I’ll call you later, okay?”

“All right, keep me posted. Oh, and if it doesn’t work out, you’re more than welcome to move back into your old room.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

“Do you need any money?”

“No, I’m okay for now, but thanks for offering. Love you.”

“Love you too.”

He ended the call and shook his head. Poor Mama Lola wasn’t settling into the whole empty-nest thing very well. Murphy had been nineteen, the oldest kid, and on his own when Dad suddenly passed away from a heart attack. It had been rough on all of them, especially Mom. Nevertheless, she focused on Murphy and his three siblings, and because of her, they’d ended up happy and well-adjusted kids. She’d done an awesome job being both Mom and Dad. However, since Jenny, the youngest and only girl, went off to college last fall, Mom was going nuts. He really should call her more often.

He set his phone aside, picked up the paper, and shook it out. “But first, a job.”
