Sunchaser

(Smilodon Pride 02)
by

Beryll & Osiris Brackhaus

Roan has pretended to be a human for long enough. He needs to get out of town and roam the land, as any proper werecat should.

The last thing he wants is his conscience insisting he should save an abused werewolf from a traveling circus first. The very last thing he expects is the local sheriff’s daughter having the exact same idea – and beating him to the punch.

Their rescue goes spectacularly wrong, and suddenly Roan, Betsy and their crippled wolf find themselves fleeing across the US for the Mexican border, chased by the police and vengeful circus fey alike.

Sunchaser is a non-romance, road-movie-ish urban fantasy adventure novel about a werecat drifter, a wide-eyed human girl and a defective werewolf learning that sometimes, family really is the ones you didn’t pick.

Excerpt

Roan couldn’t think of any reason to go to Europe other than visiting his baby brother in Paris, and even that was unlikely since it would involve flying. But he and Betsy kept nodding and smiling.

“That would be awesome,” Betsy added and then, as if she was trying to mock his thoughts, “I’d love to visit Europe one day.”

She would have to do some major convincing to get him to agree to that. Not to mention that they would never manage to get monster wolf Martin on a plane. Even with carefully faked papers. Maybe once he was able to turn human again. Betsy would probably love Paris and Roan was sure his brother would be delighted to play host to her. Connor was just the kind of person who welcomed people and made them feel at home. And Betsy would be a perfect guest, soaking up all of Connor’s artsy chit-chat like a sponge.

He shook his head. Was he seriously thinking about taking Betsy to Paris? When had he even decided that he and Betsy would be going everywhere together? As soon as she got her new ID from Deirdre, she could just get on a plane and fly to Europe without him. She could travel all over the place. He had promised to protect her, but that didn’t mean she would feel like staying with him forever. Since when did he want her to stay, anyway? He was a loner, unbound by any obligations and he liked it that way.

Only, he suddenly would rather be an unbound loner together with her and his stupid mutt.

Maybe it was better to treat this subject like he did with all things that would have required careful soul-searching. He’d ignore it and just see what came naturally.

Softpaw

Connor’s life used to be the dream of any cultured werecat. He spent his days in Paris’ gay quarter with comfortably little real work, playing the piano, surrounded by art, fine food and good friends. Now, a feral vampire preys on the prostitutes of ‘his’ quarter, killing the boys of the Marais one by one.

When Connor invites a newly arrived hooker to stay on his houseboat, the last thing he expects is Michel to be a member of the Brigade Criminelle – a troubled, hunky rookie cop sent undercover to explore Connor’s connection to the murders, picked mostly because he had been a boy of the Marais himself, not so long ago.

Hiding their true natures becomes a problem for both when their initial attraction becomes much more than they ever thought possible. But in order to bring down the serial killer and maybe have a chance at making their relationship work out, one of them will have to take the first, critical leap…

About Beryll & Osiris

Beryll and Osiris Brackhaus are a couple currently living their happily ever after in the very heart of Germany, under the stern but loving surveillance of their cat.
Both of them are voracious but picky readers, they love telling stories and drinking tea, good food and the occasional violent movie. Together, they write novels of adventure and romance, hoping to share a little of their happiness with their readers.

Beryll
An artist by heart, Beryll wrote stories even before she knew what letters were. As easily inspired as she is frustrated, her own work is never good enough (in her eyes). A perfectionist in the best and worst sense of the word and the driving creative force of the duo.

Osiris

An entertainer and craftsman in his approach to writing, Osiris is the down-to-earth, practical part of the team. Broadly interested in almost every subject and skill, with a sunny mood and caring personality, he strives to bring the human nature into focus of each of his stories.

Review: This was the first book by these authors that I have read and I am in a holding pattern with it. Now normally I would read book one first, but for some reason I started with this one. The first thing I have to say is that I wished I had read a bit more about this story before picking it up. I was hoping for a good paranormal romance with some major hot sex between two sexy men, and I got zip. So for me well let’s just say I was a bit let down.

Roan is a panther shifter and is a total ass most of the time. His mother trained him to be a good cat but then basically disappeared like a female cat does, I suppose. It is a fresh new idea for sure. Seeing as cats are loners by nature it would make sense. She taught him how to survive, including stealing and killing. There is nothing really good about him, except how he treated the older woman he worked for. He has no stable job and walks to where ever he wants to go. That is until he helps Betsy rescue an abused wolf, who is actually a werewolf himself.

Now Betsy is running from the law, well her daddy and soon to be ex-fiancée who are both idiots. She decides to rescue Martin, who is a werewolf but stuck in wolf form for what looks to be forever, he never changes. Then Roan who had the same idea, finds her and they end up on the run for their lives.

There is no romance, no heat other than from the bad guys who are coming at them. You have a cat shifter who changes but a wolf that never does, which brought the story down even more because it felt like I was left in the middle. It is funny as hell with a serious tone to the side. Now I felt bad for the defective werewolf but I wished the author would have finished this story with a bit more spark.

In its own way the story rocked pretty damn good, but the fact that it was not m/m, no romance and no sex, and no changing wolf made it drop pretty far for me. Which will teach me to pay attention to the blurbs of books more. Other than that I will go see what the first book has going on. I do hope that it is a romance novel though.
