Wolf, In League

(Wolf 03)
by

A.F. Henley

It’s been months since anyone at the Committee has had any contact from the O’Connell family or their pack members, and they are not happy. Suspicious of the activities that took place in D.C. and determined to find out what the wolves are up to, the Committee recruits one of their newest residents, Doctor Matthew Dietrich, to play the part of neighbor and infiltrate the family.

Matthew has always been a keep-to-himself kind of person. Though idealistic and optimistic, he prefers to work in solitude, at night, while he researches the findings that he hopes will one day change the world. When he’s approached by the executives of the Center, he has no idea why they’d choose him. And to say he is skeptical over the concept of men that can shift into wolves would be an understatement. Until he meets his new partner, the man that will play the part of his “husband” in the Committee’s scheme, Doctor Gavin Strauss.

Genre: Gay, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy

Notes: Wolf, in League contains some explicit and violent content

A.F. Henley!

Hello, and welcome to the tour! It’s an honour to be here on MM Good Book Reviews, and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to share the details of, and to celebrate with you over, the newest release in my Wolf series, Wolf, in League. For those that are joining the tour for the first time, welcome! And for those who have been here before, it’s amazing to see you again.

As I’ve done with the rest of the tours for these Wolf releases, this blog tour and giveaway is all about teasers – tiny teasers – or, just enough to get a taste and hopefully inspire a desire for the rest of the novel. But before we get there, however, I want to let you know about the giveaway that comes along with the tour. Follow through to the end of the post to learn how you could win your very own signed, print copy of Wolf in League, a “crystal and silver” diamante Howling Wolf Pendant, and a $20 gift certificate to the Less Than Three Press book market.

And now, the teaser, and a question: how would you feel if everything you knew about the truth of mankind was suddenly shown to be a lie…

Excerpt

Tiny Teaser: Post 5

“You have made it very clear that you want to be here, Doctor. That this is the place where you can fulfill the dreams and ideas that got you into genetics in the first place. And I agree with you—there is absolutely no place on this planet where you will be better served to do that. The things you will learn here will change everything you know. They will enlighten you on humankind in ways that you never even dreamed existed. These anomalies are the secret to understanding what the human body is capable of. You have no idea how far we’ve come, but you can know. You will know. If you choose to, that is. This is a research opportunity that very few of our kind even know about, let alone get the chance to work with. Isn’t that what you want? We’re offering you more knowledge than you ever knew was available. All you have to do is help us.”

Volos had been so smug. So completely confident with what he was saying. So careless. Like he hadn’t been trying to tell Matthew that the world as Matthew knew it was a lie.

Yet even there, with his forehead warming the glass beneath it and his nostrils huffing air into condensation butterflies, after he’d had to run out of the room like a child, he didn’t really believe any of it. For that he’d have to see it. He’d have to know it, sample it, study it, and even then Matthew wasn’t sure he’d draw the conclusion of what they were trying to tell him. Viruses, disorders, mutations: yes. Men who turned into wolves… men with fur—

“Ridiculous,” he hissed. It was definitely a joke. A prank on the new guy before they accepted him into their flock. That’s all it was. Volos and Dyball had been convincing, but of course they were. They were both senior members of the executive staff and had years of experience at making people believe what they wanted them to. They were joshing him and that was okay. He’d play their games. Sure he would. That was the whole point, probably—to see how he’d handle something so extraordinary. To see if he could be trusted, and make sure he really did have an open mind.

And okay, yes, he’d panicked and made a dash for the restroom to put his head back together, but that was all right too. It would make them think he was taking their words at face value and that he was giving them full consideration. So what now? How far would they take it? He could only wait and see, of course. Maybe the moment he walked out of the restroom they’d start laughing. They’d clap him on the back and they could all share in the joke. He could even make a sheepish comment about how excited he’d been starting to get over the idea of it all. If not, he’d play along until they did crack.

Sure. He could do that.

He took a breath. He let it out. He pushed away from the mirror and then used his sleeve to scrub off the marks he’d left. He stepped back, turned toward the door, and yanked it open.

  1. Okay, forget my earlier words about being careful when a boss makes such an offer. I know my curiosity would kill me afterwards (and not just the cat) if I would deny such an offer of knowledge. XD

Is it not odd? When contemplating paranormal things we often tend to think that maybe, just maybe there is a wee little truth to it. But then…*sighs* I can not say more. 😉

But what can be said about the Committee? About this smug and smooth Volos character?

A lie within a lie? A truth within a truth? Or both?

    <3

    1. Hmm… those are very good questions, my friend. XD

And your favourite answer: I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. <3

  2. Oh lord poor Matthew he seems to be in a state of confusion I don’t blame him just what are Volos and Dyball up to? I want to know what happens next!

    1. Thank you! Although I can’t promise you “next” at the next post, I can promise you “more”. XD

So glad you’re enjoying the tour! <3

  3. Been there, people always pulling pranks on poor unsuspecting Jack. *sigh* It’s gotten to the point where I can’t tell if people are putting me on anymore. On the other side no one can tell when I’m joking either. It’s one of the benefits of having a naturally dead-pan expression on at all times…..that and I won’t develop a lot of wrinkles. xD

I’ve found the best way to approach it is to remove the fun. And I enjoy every minute of it. The best way is to stand stone-still and never blink just waiting for them to continue. It puts them off and so if it’s just a prank they fess up to it so they’ll have something to say, or they’ll try and explain themselves. I get immense joy watching them squirm under my gaze. Is that evil? 😀

  4. Thank you for the excerpt. I haven’t read the previous books, so I do not know too much about this series. But it sounds really good!

  5. Muahahahahahaha! I no longer have to sit in suspense to what happens next! All I can say is… slimy. Abso-freaking-lutely slimy.
*makes face* But I’m sure that’s what you’re going for when you wrote this part, weren’t you? 😉

Yes, I did try to pull an all-nighter to read the whole thing. No, I didn’t succeed, but I shall be… retiring extra early tonight. 😛

Fun as always, mister Henley. <3

    1. *facepalms* No reading all night! XD

I’m really glad you’re enjoying the novel so far. And he IS slimy, it’s so true! 😀

  6. Congrats on your new book. It sounds great. I love gay urban fantasy and paranormal, and the book blurb and excerpt made it a tbr.

    1. I’ve never liked that either. Some people never seem to really grow up do they? Although, to be honest, I’m not sure this is actually a prank… 😉

Thank you again for stopping by to read and comment! <3

  7. Wow. The rude awakening when he realized that all that’s been said to him is the reality, and not a joke. Great Excerpt!
Thanks for sharing. I’m having fun reading them all.
    Much success, Henley!

    1. I can’t even imagine what that would be like, although, I’d like to think I’d be more intrigued than freaked out. That could just be wishful thinking, though. XD

Thank YOU very much for stopping in to read and comment! Good luck! <3
