Blurb: It’s been a long shift for Detective Vincent Pasquale. Back at his desk at the station he finds a phone message from his vampire spouse, Mark, waiting for him.

“Hi. I figured calling your station phone number was more secure than using a cell. Listen our friend Dexter found something about who may have tried to frame Jean-Claude. Turns out that there is a lot more to this thing! It’s big. Jean-Claude and Jaime are meeting me here before we all head over to see Tortego at his offices. We should be there in a half hour and we figure this meeting will run most of the day. If you can join us fine but if not I’ll tell you about it later after your shift is over. Call me.”

A few moments later a report comes into the station about a possible terrorist bomb explosion at a Midtown office building. No survivors are reported. To his horror Vinnie realizes the bombsite’s address is the exact location of Tortego’s offices. In a panic Vinnie rushes to the scene where, out of nowhere, he is shot from behind by an unknown assailant.

Its’ four funerals and a wedding, as the newest Julian book unfolds.

Review: This is the first book by this author that I have read, but had heard some amazing things about his books. I should have started with book one, but am grateful that I did not because I don’t care for females in my stories at all so when I found out about Jamie I didn’t much care to read it. Although she is a real fire cracker so I might be changing my mind.

I must admit the idea of vampire mysteries were a bit alluring. There are so many twists and turns to this story that I was definitely kept my attention, although the story jumped around so much that it ended up giving me a headache. I am afraid that all the added information and detail did the exact opposite of what it should have in my opinion. I kept trying to figure out how to skim over most of the story just to get to the good parts. There were so many characters that it just confused me even more.

Vinnie is at the station when his husband and friends decided to go find out who was behind Jean-Claude’s framing. They had saved his ass from death, when Vinnie proved he was not behind it. If he had been a few minutes earlier he would have been killed from the explosion that was set to kill them all. Now hidden they try to find out who was trying to kill them and who wanted to cause so much pain.

Now this was a pretty damn good book, but because of the added details and multiple characters it went down in ratings for me. It just seemed to jump from one scene to the next, from one dialog to another and ended up making me want to throw the book down and walk away. It had great potential, but in my eyes the author just went overboard with all the extras.

After reading this story it didn’t make me want to go read the first five stories I am afraid.

The Case of the Heavenly Host

(Mark Julian, Vampire P.I. Mystery 03)
by

It’s a madhouse as Mark and Vinnie prepare for their wedding. Jaime is missing in action consumed with her quest to find “just the right forties’ gown” for her own pending nuptials. Vinnie is stuck on a complex “secret” case and has no free time to help with any marriage planning. Mrs. Pasquale, Vinnie’s mom, is locked in a battle of wills with an archbishop who won’t let her priestly cousin bless, “any such unions”. Worse, Tortego is offering to preside over the ceremony in his capacity as, “the leader of our vampire clan who is still an ordained priest you know”!

But things really get crazy for Mark when an angelic messenger for the Heavenly Host approaches him. Dark forces are gathering and Mark is called into action to find the missing sword of the Archangel Michael. As Mark begins his search he encounters two dark angels who take no prisoners in their quest to find it first. Murders abound and the hunt is on to find the sword and end their killing rampage before more innocents are slaughtered. This time Mark Julian will face his worst crisis and in the end no one will ever be the same.

“And the prophets spoke of the blackened angels of destruction who spread their dark wings across the earth seeking to blot out the love of God!”
