Sean Chats about Writing

Words are hard. Writing is hard. I wish I could say I live a glamorous life where every morning I sit in my beautiful library, coffee in hand, as I prepare for a day of writing. It’s more along the lines of writing after a day of work, during a lunch break, and on my days off. For me, writing as a job is very new and it’s been a struggle to discipline myself. I currently have one novel out and various files of unfinished manuscripts that will eventually complete my series.

You always hear about release days and book signings but rarely do authors speak openly regarding the balance of day jobs, families, social lives, and writing. The true life of an aspiring author may not be the one people expect, but it’s worth talking about. The day to day routines will vary depending on the individual, of course, and whether they can afford to write full-time or not. I have one little title published in a world filled with millions and millions of books. I’m very proud of my one little novel, don’t get me wrong, but I’m far from making $100,000 a year (wouldn’t that be nice?). During the day I work my non-author job and when I’m not trying to have a social life I sit down and open my laptop.

Writing is hard, though. I wish I could say it naturally comes easy to me but it will take more practice before that time happens. When I write there is this little editor that always tries to correct each and every detail I put down on a page, no matter how proud of it I am. Experience will help to quiet this voice but for someone with six months under his belt, it’s not an easy task. Confidence has yet to mature in my writing, even now as I write this post. This doesn’t mean I believe my writing is terrible but rather me not completely believing in the words that I am putting out into the world.

However, writing is my job and I do it because I love it. I do not go without my sprints where words flow from my fingertips and it feels like the most natural thing in the world. There are many nights where I am utterly engrossed in the story and can’t type fast enough to get them out.

Alas, this is the life of a writer. The back and forth between self-loathing is balanced when you get your first review. The lonely nights seem to not matter when you meet with your critique group and get to talk about fictional characters as if they were sitting in the same room.

When I first published The Boy and His Wolf, I didn’t think anybody would buy it outside of my friends and family. It has completely shocked me to recently make it on Allromance.com’s Bestseller list. This tells me that people love to read a story involving interesting characters, and it tells me that readers don’t necessarily care if an author writes before and after their 9-5. Seeing the support for my novel and the positive feedback has made what I love, crazy hours and the writer’s block included, completely worth it.

So, I present to you my debut novel, The Boy and His Wolf. The story follows monster Hunter Tanner Settino, a trained badass, when he receives the news that the Alpha of his old wolf pack has been murdered. Tanner is not a wolf but Dash Howell, his ex-boyfriend, is and it’s Dash’s pack that Tanner must return to. His small mountain town is in danger from a killer and Tanner isn’t the kind of person to let someone terrorize his friends and family. The only thing is that seeing Dash, with his stiff muscles and irresistible earthy scent, is the last thing Tanner wants to do. He and Dash are over and Tanner has put quite a few states of distance between them to make sure of it. What Tanner discovers is that you can run from love, but only for so long.

Review: I have been reading romance stories since I was twelve years old and it wasn’t till four years ago that I read my first m/m romance story. I think my favorite of them all is the paranormal ones, because it is a world in which I can lose myself into. There is something fascinating about them. This is the first book by Sean Thomas that I have had a chance to read and I was fascinated by it. It wasn’t until I finished that I found out that this is his first release and all I have to say is that he has an amazing gift and I look forward to reading more by him.

It is a short story, can be read within about thirty minutes for me. It was perfect to me and was not missing anything that I could see. The world that he created was perfect and the dialog that each character had made the world pop out to me. It showed how much love someone has for another, when he is willing to give it all up to keep the other safe. How fast he came home to protect his pack, even when he knew that it would hurt his heart.

Tanner is a hunter and a pretty amazing one at that. He goes after those who are doing their best to create evil among the paranormal world and the humans. He had just found out that his alpha had been murdered by outsiders. He had to go back to help them all, even if it meant seeing the one man he had loved for a long time. He had left his pack to keep his mate safe.

Dash is a werewolf and Tanner’s mate. He had been just trying to keep his mate safe, but Tanner was afraid that it would get him killed. After Tanner left the pack four years ago, Dash went a bit crazy. Sleeping with many of the guys from the college and just distancing himself from his family. Now Tanner was back, and the danger started up again.

It is told basically from Tanner’s point of view and you can feel the sadness that came from him about it all. However you can also feel the love and happiness at the end. Tanner and Dash had always been friends and then lovers. Even though Dash had been pissed as hell by Tanner’s leaving him, you can see that the love is still there for him. I was amazed that the pack had taken in the humans so easily and how they were all connected. The alpha’s death brought a lot of pain for them all, but it brings them back together to fight those who were going after them. With the other pack alpha telling her story to Tanner, I was amazed that she took the time to tell her story to him. She comes off as such a bitch that at first I hated her, but she helped him make a choice.

I had a blast reading this story and look forward to reading the next book. It did leave many questions unanswered though. I want to learn more about Tanner’s life though. In many books hunters are look at as the worst on the planet. They go around trying to kill all paranormals, however in this story that is not the case. I want to know if he is going to continue to work as a hunter or will he focus on his mating. Let’s just say that when they do hook up after a long while separated it is extremely hot and sensual. I loved this book and look forward to reading the next story. With all of the packs around, I can see the possibilities around. All in all this was a damn good story that I would recommend reading.

It gives you gorgeous men, a bit of pain and anger, a little angst, best friends, werewolves, excitement, a touch of suspense and some danger. I do wish that it had been longer as I could see myself spending the day reading it.
