Their love was a death sentence.

Deacon, Viscount Carlisle, was aware of the slums and gin-lanes of London. Just as he was aware of the underground traffic that furnished the brothels and bath houses with human innocents. He was also aware that the so-called justice system would hang the accused without much of an attempt at a defense, unless the unfortunate had deep pockets to pay for it.

He just hadn’t expected to be directly involved in any of it.
It started with a plea for help and ended with forbidden love, the love between a Viscount and a stable-boy. An impossible love and a guarantee of the hangman’s noose.

Will Deacon fight for Tom? Will he risk the death sentence and take that fight from the stately halls of his English mansion to the horrors of Newgate Prison and the slums of London?

Or will he realize that if he doesn’t, death will be a welcome end to the loneliness of the sentence he is already living?

Review: I am not really sure what to say about this story. I never read nor review historical novels. They always seem to lack something to me. Maybe it is because I am more the modern computer type person with a little paranormal added in me. However Victoria always manages to capture the attention of her readers and leave them with more feelings than they started out with.

It shows many things in this story that will show you just how we have changed. The guys go through so much more with their sexuality then they do these days. In the time where there is so much poverty that you never have enough food on your plate to getting killed for loving another man. It just makes me sick.

Deacon has always done what he could to stay safe, following the rules but his best friend doesn’t. He will do everything to help his friends, that is for sure. Beau somehow gets his ass in trouble, so Deacon needs to find a way to get him rescued from an underground auction. He ends up purchasing a young boy. He helps him by sending him to his family.

Five years later he goes to his family home to deal with his father’s death. Only to find out that the young boy he sent there is now a man. A man who calls to him in more ways than one. Now I was not happy with what happened with Beau so it made the story a bit harder to read. I don’t like stories that have a sadness to them.

An although the author gives you a story with a great plot, she makes her characters fully developed with a lot of attraction to them.

I can say that this story was amazing, but it was not for me. I have come to the conclusion that I still don’t much care for historical stories. It was well researched from what I can tell and shows the dangers of what happens to those who are gay. It was well written and will grab your attention from the start. That is, if you are into historicals.

I look forward, however, to reading more by this author.
