Mari Evans

Laurie Stallon isn’t like other high schoolers. After suffering years of abuse at his father’s hands, he now lives in a foster care facility and finds solace volunteering at the local animal shelter. Laurie’s had to grow up fast, and even though his eighteenth birthday is still weeks away, he’s more adult than most adults he knows. When he meets Dr. Sam Davies, the new shelter veterinarian, the attraction is instant. They become friends at work, but Laurie knows Sam will never go for someone like him. No matter how Laurie tries to prove his maturity to Sam, Sam continues to reject him as too young.

Needing a distraction, Laurie goes out dancing for his birthday and finds his life in danger yet again. When Sam is called to the hospital, he realizes Laurie needs someone to care for him. Sam takes him home, and they slowly build a relationship. But more than their age difference works against them. Facing the disapproval of friends and the scars from Laurie’s past, they’ll need to put all their trust in love for a chance at a future together.

LAURIE PEDDLED home on his bike, loving the balmy spring weather. He let his mind wander to the evening ahead. They were planning on going to a new bar that had a dance floor and apparently was “da bomb,” as his best friend Becky had called it. It was supposed to be a gay-friendly bar, which meant there was going to be a mixed crowd. He was fine with it as long as he got to dance and was with his friends. Where he usually only needed fifteen minutes to get home, it took him nearly twenty this time because he was enjoying the sun and warm breeze.

Laurie lived in a group home for teens who couldn’t live at home anymore. They had guidance to learn how to handle living on their own as well as counseling for whatever reason they’d had to leave home. He had his own room and basically took care of himself—not like when he had first arrived over a year and a half before, when he hadn’t known how to cook, shop, handle bills, or do his laundry. Now he was nearly eighteen, and as soon as he was out of high school, which would be pretty soon, he would need to find a different place to live. Fortunately, the people who ran the home would help him to find something affordable as well as to apply for college scholarships and other financial aids.

He only had two months of high school left, and then he planned on studying to become a veterinary assistant. He always knew he wanted to work with animals––but he thought he wasn’t smart enough to become a veterinarian, so this was his best option

After closing his bedroom door behind him, he threw his keys and phone in the bowl on the little table next to the door. He shrugged out of his jacket and hung it on the hook on the wall, then let himself flop onto his bed, kicking his shoes off at the same time. He really wanted to take a nap. He didn’t tire easily, but he had been up at five that morning, getting to the shelter at six to make sure all the dogs would get some exercise. The other volunteers never really took the dogs for walks, but Laurie thought they all deserved some fun and freedom to run once in a while. So whenever he could find enough time, he would walk with as many dogs as he could. It took several trips to the nearby park, with as many as ten dogs at a time, but it was worth it in the end.

Damn, he was tired, but his head was running a mile a minute with all that had happened today. Closing his eyes, he rolled on his side and got more comfortable. He let his mind wander to the new vet. The guy was so handsome, so attractive. What he wouldn’t give to have those muscles, to be so tall and strong. Maybe then all the kids at school would leave him alone.

Laurie had faced a lot of bullying from an early age, until he had learned to be invisible. Of course, he had a lot of experience with being bullied when he was younger. It had started when he was around thirteen. His dad started commenting on how small he was, and that he wasn’t interested enough in boy’s stuff. The physical abuse had started shortly after that and lasted until his mom had finally discovered what his dad was doing to him when she wasn’t home. Then all hell had broken loose. He was sixteen by then.

When his mom threw his dad out and took Laurie to the hospital, he was completely out of it. He was no longer responding to anything or anyone––he’d had a mental breakdown. They had started therapy right there in the hospital, and the therapist had arranged for him to get into the foster care he was in now, because his mother hadn’t been able to handle Laurie’s problems as well as her own. This, together with the fact that she hadn’t protected him from his father, made the therapist contact Child Protective Services––which had made the final decision. His father had gone to jail, and his mom had gotten very depressed.

Laurie had changed with therapy and was now a bit more outspoken and a lot less invisible. He wasn’t flaming, but he was who he was, and nobody was ever going to bully that out of him again! He had a gotten a lip piercing right after he went to live in the foster care facility. It had been his way to prove he had absolute control over his own body. But it had proven to be a bit addictive, and since then he had gotten more piercings––they made him feel more alive, and more in touch with his body somehow.

His mom was just coming to terms with the fact that she hadn’t been able to protect him and that she had been married to a monster. She’d gone to see the principal after finding out that Laurie had been bullied at school too. According to her, it was the one thing she did do right, even if it was too little, too late. Laurie felt guilty that his mom felt like this—it wasn’t her fault that his dad was an asshole behind her back. And the kids at school weren’t hers, so she had no influence on their upbringing.

He had a great relationship with his mom now, even if she hadn’t been capable of taking care of him during the last year or so. He spoke with her and saw her all the time, and if it weren’t for college, he would’ve gone back to live with her after graduation.

At school things were better… kind of. The bullying had stopped after his breakdown because of the zero tolerance policy. The teachers now protected him. They made sure there was always an adult in his presence—either a teacher, a janitor, or a counselor patrolled the hallways, the bathrooms, and the school grounds. It seemed insane, but apparently his meltdown had made a big impression on the principal. The guy was scared to death something like this might happen again at his school, even though not all of the bullying had happened there. His father had been the biggest problem, but his mom had scared the crap out of the principal anyway.

He must finally have dozed off, because when he woke up, it was already getting dark. He felt well rested and full of energy, so he grabbed clean boxers and his bag of toiletries and padded down the hall to the shared bathroom.

In the shower, Laurie washed his hair and body. Standing under the hot water, Laurie ran his hand across his chest to his belly and further down. His dick twitched when he let his hand slide down to cup his balls. He liked to massage his balls before he actually touched his dick. It made the whole area more sensitive, allowing the arousal to build much higher than by just rubbing his shaft.

As soon as he started stroking for real, his mind flooded with images of Sam Davies. He thought about how his body would look naked and imagined Sam’s hand was on him instead of his own. In his fantasy, Sam would stand behind him with one arm around his chest, keeping him in place.

Sam’s mouth would lick and nip all the sensitive spots on his neck, while his hand would keep stroking him slowly but steadily, keeping him on edge but not letting him tumble over. The hand on Laurie’s chest would occasionally flick a thumb over his hard nipple that had the little bar piercing in it. Then, when he was about to go crazy with need, Sam would speed up the strokes and bite down on the spot between his neck and shoulder. The sting would throw him into pure bliss.

Laurie could barely suppress a scream when he came, harder than he ever had before. His knees gave out and he slid down the tiled wall, landing on his butt on the floor, his legs sprawled out. His breath stuck in his throat and his brain melted into a puddle. The warm water of the shower still rained down on him, feeling hot on his flushed, overly sensitive skin. His hair was plastered to his forehead, and water dripped into his eyes, making his already fuzzy vision even mistier.

About Mari

Mari Evans is a wife and the proud mother of a very active daughter, two dogs and two cats. She’s a very social kind of girl, who loves to talk. It’s both her best and worst quality.

From the moment she could read, she devoured books. Anything goes, as long as it has a happy ending.

There were always stories swirling around in her head and as a child she liked to lay in bed and let the characters have their story and happy ending. It wasn’t until 2013 that she actually tried to put one of the whole stories down and submit it to a publisher. To her own surprise and excitement it was accepted. This gave her the drive to keep going.

The decision to write m/m was made when a friend told a story about a young gay man that struck a chord, even as her husband had already encouraged her to try it earlier.

Now she found her passion, having already found the love in her family and friends, her life is completely chaotic, crazy but wonderful.
