When FBI agent Jerry Lee Parker wakes from a coma after a murderous attack on his life, he has no memory of his immediate past. In the blink of an eye, he has gone from having a nearly photographic memory to recalling nothing of the last six months of his life, including his partner and lover, John Flynn. While Lee tries to reboot his past and reconnect with John, there are events at play around him he doesn’t understand. John is keeping secrets from him, secrets which could get them both killed.

Matters come to a head when Lee is hounded to turn over a mysterious artifact, of which he has no knowledge. The two men wind up in a fight for their lives as they risk everything to keep the powerful relic out of the hands of a ruthless killer. In order to protect those he loves, however, John may be forced to make a deal with the devil.

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Sarah Madison, author of Truth and Consequences

Hi Sarah, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

I’m a storyteller by nature, but I grew up in a family of service-oriented people, so many years ago, I decided I had to put my creative nature aside and concentrate on my scientific inclinations. I also thought that being an adult was a bit like being Eeyore, so I went for years thinking that a life without being passionate about something was normal.

About five or six years ago, a friend introduced me to online fanfiction archives, and I began writing again. A million words later, I submitted my first story for publication, and here we are.

Truth and Consequences is book 3 in the Sixth Sense series. It features FBI Agents Jerry Lee Parker and John Flynn, and the events that occur when Flynn accidentally touches a mysterious artifact and gains unusual powers. As the Sixth Sense series unfolds, we learn there is a set of such boxes, and that Lee and John aren’t the only ones looking for them. They’re in over their head, and the water is just getting deeper…

What’s your job like?

Hours of boredom interrupted by moments of terror. No, seriously. Being a Special Agent isn’t like what they show on television. It’s a lot less glamorous and a lot more boring. Questioning witnesses and suspects, following leads, working ridiculous hours, drinking too much bad coffee and eating too much junk food. They can’t show that on television, though. It would make for a mind-numbing show. Like watching paint dry.

That’s not to say it doesn’t ever get hairy. People shoot at you sometimes, or clock you over the head with a baseball bat. I’m still getting over that one.

Would you rather be respected or feared? Why?

Respected. Definitely respected. I’ve seen what it’s like to be feared, and it isn’t pretty. Before the aforementioned baseball incident, I had a pretty scary memory. At best, people treated me like Special Agent Google. At worst, they thought I was a freak. It would be nice to have some respect for a change.

I’ve also seen firsthand how someone can use unspeakable power to control the lives of those around them. Being feared strikes me as a lonely existence, among other things.

What’s your favorite book?

On Basilisk Station by David Weber. I like the fact that the heroine was given an impossible task by her CO, and her crew blamed her for their exile, but instead of whining about how it couldn’t be done, she figured out a way to get it done—even if she had to drop-kick everyone along the way. I enjoy hard-core military sci-fi anyway, but this one has it all. Besides, treecats. I want a treecat. I’m pretty sure if I ever went to Sphinx, one would adopt me.

If you could go anywhere, all expenses paid, where would you go?

Hah. Sphinx. No? Okay, Greece. I want to see the Parthenon in person. I want to sit on a sunny balcony, staring out over water so blue it makes my eyes hurt, sipping coffee and waiting for John to come back from his morning run.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Not much to say. My mom kicked me out of the house as teenager when she found out I was gay. I moved in with my granny, and my perfect memory allowed me to get scholarships out of the boonies and into the school of my choice. My perfect memory also made a life of crime very tempting, so I went into the FBI as a way of self-protection.

Excerpt

I knew the moment John walked into the bar. It was like my sonar pinged, my radar lit up—you name it. I heard the door open, and without turning around, I knew it was him because the hair on the back of my neck stood up. Because something in my gut tightened, and my cock lifted in earnest. I watched him in the mirror as he scanned the room, locked in on my presence, and stalked toward me like a panther in a pen full of sheep. Everyone else in the room was aware of him as well. I practically preened when he came up beside me. He took a seat and signaled the bartender, who came over with flattering attention.

Sarah Madison is a veterinarian with a big dog, an even bigger horse, too many cats, and a very patient boyfriend. She is a terrible cook, and concedes that her life would be easier if Purina made People Chow. She writes because it is cheaper than therapy.
