Can two men keep a childhood promise for marital bliss?

Wyatt is overwhelmed after his grandfather dies, leaving him to take over the cattle ranch. Wyatt has wanted to marry Diego since they made a childhood pact, but Diego isn’t back for their second chance.

When a funeral calls Diego back to Texas, he comes face-to-face with the cowboy who broke his heart. Resentment has burned inside him for years, but his anger wavers as he realizes just how much Wyatt is struggling to keep his head above water. The man he once loved is lonely and burdened, and Diego feels compelled to help him rediscover the strong, capable rancher he knows him to be.Hostility gives way to passion, then friendship as they fall into a rhythm of work and sex. Wyatt has renewed hope he might wrangle the man he wants to be his groom. But Diego has a life waiting for him one thousand miles away, and love may not be enough to prevent history from repeating itself.

Wrangling a Groom is Book 2 of the Marital Bliss series, but it can be read as a standalone.

Prologue

Two six-year-old boys sat in a tree together, very much not k-i-s-s-i-n-g. Not like Grandad, who was kissing that horrible Ms. Fletcher beneath the sprawling oak’s branches. Grandad was going to marry her, and then she’d be Wyatt’s grandmother, and she didn’t like kids or horses or anything about ranching. It didn’t make any sense at all, but Wyatt overheard Mama saying that men lost all good sense around a pretty face.

Wyatt looked over at Diego. He wasn’t a girl, but his face was pretty — and he didn’t make Wyatt do stupid things.

“Is Grandad really going to marry her?” Diego asked.

Grandad was really Wyatt’s grandfather, but all the kids around the ranch called him that. Diego’s father was a foreman on the crew, and Grandad said he was the kind of man you could count on to get things done. Wyatt and Diego had been best friends since they could crawl.

“Dunno,” Wyatt said. “Think maybe we should get married?”

Diego’s eyes widened to a comical degree. “Us? But we’re boys.”

“So?” Wyatt said. “At least you’re not horrible. If we make a pact to get married when we’re older, then we won’t have to worry about some awful pretty face coming around.”

“I guess.” Diego sounded skeptical.

“Come on, let’s make a pact. It’ll be fun!”

Wyatt scrambled down the tree, and Diego followed him, just like he always did. They ran past the smooching couple, Ms. Fletcher exclaiming about rude little boys as they flew past. Laughing, Diego shouted, “Race ya to the barn!”

Dust kicked up under their feet as they poured on speed. Wyatt skidded around a corner, Diego on his heels, and they both raced for the spot behind the barn where they hid out to avoid notice and the chores that always seemed needing done.

Diego was gaining on him, and Wyatt threw out an arm to block him. They went down in a tumble, skidding into the building.

“You made me fall,” Diego accused sharply, eyes glassy. “I’m bleeding, see?”

He pointed to his knee, scraped and oozing a hint of blood. Wyatt checked himself over, but he was in one piece.

“Sorry.”

“It hurts.”

“Hey, we can use it in our pact. You need blood for a pact; everybody knows that.”

Diego looked at him dubiously. “Really?”

Wyatt nodded his head. Looking around for something sharp, he spotted a nail bent and poking out sharply from a plank of wood. He raked his hand over it. The skin split open, blood rushing to the surface. He held his hand up proudly.

Diego looked awed. “Didn’t that hurt?”

“Nuh-uh,” Wyatt lied.

It really hurt, but he didn’t want to show it. Grandad was always telling him to toughen up; ranch life was hard. Ignoring the pain, he focused on the pact they were about to make. “Get some of your blood on your hand, then we’ll shake on it.”

Diego dabbed at his knee, then lifted his hand, and Wyatt pressed his bloody palm against it, wincing at the sting.

“There, it’s done. Now we can marry each other when we’re older.”

“How much older?” Diego asked.

Wyatt thought about that. “Not as old as Grandad. But still, we need to be old. Not like teenagers.”

Diego brightened. “My parents got married when they were twenty.” Then he frowned. “But they got divorced, and they said it was ’cause they were too young.”

“Twenty-five then,” Wyatt announced. “I, Wyatt Jones, make a pact to marry you, Diego Flores, when we’re twenty-five years old.”

After Diego repeated the vow, he asked, “Don’t you need a wife to have kids? You’ll need kids to take over the ranch for you, like you’re gonna take it over for Grandad.”

Wyatt pondered that. “Mama can just have more for me. Come on, I’m hungry. Let’s get a snack.”

Mama stopped them before they’d made it three steps into the kitchen from the back door. “Hold up, there,” she said sternly. “What happened to you two?”

“Diego fell and skinned his knee,” Wyatt said. “And we decided to get married.”

She laughed. “Is that so? A busy day then.” She grabbed a cloth and wet it, instructing Diego to take a seat so she could clean him up. “And what about you? Is all that blood from Diego’s knee?”

“No, it was for our pact. I cut my hand so I would bleed too.”

“Cut it on what?”

“A nail on the barn,” Diego said.

“A nail on the— Oh, for heaven’s sake, you’ll have to get a tetanus shot!”

“A shot?” Wyatt looked down at his throbbing hand regretfully. “I don’t want a shot.”

“Too late for that now,” she said. “Let’s get you clean and bandaged, then we’ll run you into town to see the doctor.”

Wyatt’s lip wobbled. “I just wanted to make a marriage pact with Diego.”

Her lips twitched as she pushed him into a chair. “Well, baby, sometimes love hurts.”

About D.J.!

DJ Jamison is the author of more than a dozen m/m romances, including the Ashe Sentinel series and the Hearts and Health series. She writes a variety of queer characters, from gay to bisexual to asexual, with a focus on telling love stories that are more about common ground than lust at first sight. DJ grew up in the Midwest in a working-class family, and those influences can be found in her writing through characters coping with real-life problems: money troubles, workplace drama, family conflicts and, of course, falling in love. DJ spent more than a decade in the newspaper industry before chasing her first dream to write fiction. She spent a lifetime reading before that, and continues to avidly devour her fellow authors’ books each night. She lives in Kansas with her husband, two sons, two fish and, regrettably, one snake.
