Apollo’s Curse

by

Brad Vance

All Dane Gale ever wanted was to be a successful writer.  After a few sessions with his new friends Rose and Sherry at a romance book club, well, the more romances they read, the more they’re convinced they can do better.  And do they ever!  They join their creative forces to become “Pamela Clarice,” self-published romance novelist.  When they look for a cover model for their first book, Dane sees the photos that will change his life.

Paul Musegetes is the world’s most popular romance cover model, and the most secretive.  Dane soon finds himself obsessed with this supernaturally handsome man, and when he meets Paul at the Romance Writers’ Ball on the Summer Solstice, he and Paul connect for one night of passion…

After that night, Dane’s a writing machine.  He can’t stop writing romances, and every story he touches turns to gold.  But he also finds that he can’t write anything but romances. And soon he’s spending every waking moment of every day writing another after another…

Then Dane finds out that this Midas touch has a heavy price.  After the next Summer Solstice, he’ll never write again.  Not a romance, not a serious novel.  Nothing.  Not even a grocery list.  And that leaves him with only one option – find Paul, and get him to break the curse.  But before he can do that, he’ll have to track down Paul’s equally mysterious photographer, Jackson da Vinci…

Excerpt:

It wasn’t hard to find Paul again.  And to find the “other images with this model” link.  And click.  And click.  And blow up my browser window to 200%, so that when I zoomed the photos, his face, then his eyes, filled my screen.

And what surprised me was that there were not only so many images of him, but that he could be so many different men in so many different pictures, different settings – he was the tender lover with the rose, the snarling Viking, the cool guy in a band, the Miami Beach tool, the shifter/werewolf, the business man, the college kid, the gym rat, the outdoorsman, the poet, the drill sergeant, the soccer player, the swimmer…  As I looked at each picture, I was totally convinced that I was looking at the real man, that that was who he really was…until I looked at the next.

And yet, always, he was clearly recognizably himself – Paul.  It was those eyes, reminding you that he was in there, somewhere, behind the image, and you’d never know which one he really was, he was all of them, he was whoever you wanted him to be…

Review: This is the first time that I have read one of Brad’s stories and I was quite surprised. It brought me to another world that I lost my self into. It had wonderful characters that were easy to fall in love with and a part of me just wanted to smack them upside the head. Dane has always felt the need and love to write. He wanted to succeed at it. He met two women who loved romance and he had met them at a book club. They thought that they could write better romance then those that have been published.

That was all good and well but when they went to look for a cover model, his breath was caught. He saw a man that he deeply wanted. Paul was a very successful and very talented model, but when he modeled for romance books it usually cost the author something unexpected. Seeing Paul from a photo was one thing but to actually come across him at the Romance Writer’s Ball on Summer Solstice was something altogether. They had come together that night for one night of exciting passion. It left Dane with a gift that wouldn’t or couldn’t stop.

He kept writing romance stories but it wasn’t like a normal writer. He kept at it night after night, day after day of constant writing. He had tried other things to write but he couldn’t. It had to be romance. After a year of this constant writing he finds that he has lost something. He could no longer write anything. A story, letter, grocery receipt or even a simple note. He just had no clue what was going on. He had to find Paul and Paul’s photographer. Talk about a bit of mystery. Jackson da Vinci was mysterious if not something else.

How it had started was a New York publisher had told him that unless he was out there selling himself he might not make it like the others. That he had to twitter, facebook, be on GoodReads and have a page telling about himself and his stories. He didn’t understand most of that but he knew he had to do it. A very good friend had told him about a book club that he could go to. So he did which is where he met Rose and Sherry. He had wrote other stories but they didn’t hit as much as romance does.

He knew that he had to at least see Paul. He knew that he could be found at the ball. He had met another author that same night he had ran into Paul, she was bitter and kind of warned him, but he just took it as it came. When Paul searches him out it leads to one night of passion. Paul had asked him if he was the one. The one night that would give him an amazing gift for one year. He took it and what came after was more of a shock. He could not write anything but romance and there was no stopping. He ate, drank writing in a way that he did not understand. He had wanted this but probably not to this extreme.

Then several months later he runs into that same author again and she told him, Rose and Sherry that there would not be any other photos of Paul and that he would never write again. Scared and worried he had decided to track Paul down, go all the Way to Venice and find a way to break this curse. He didn’t want to not be able to write, that was all he had ever wanted to do.

However the surprise of locating the mysterious Jackson and Paul gives him something he did not expect. When he found Jackson it lead more to falling in love and wanting to be with each other. With Jackson’s help he finds Paul, but what he learns is so much different. Paul had told him that it was not a curse but a way to show him that why write love when you can have it. You see here was Jackson the one that would truly be the one for him. Talk about smoking hot passion and fire. Two hot and sexy men with mysteries surrounding the whole set up.

I was very surprised by this book. It was not something that I thought of  normally picking up but I had to have it. I had to read it. I am so happy that I did though because it turned out to be amazing. The magic that surrounded the whole story was pretty awesome. I am not really sure what to think about it all but I did love the story. It did leave me with questions but after reading the whole story they were answered slowly. I do with the story had been told in a little different way that would not have made it so long. I love story’s that are in between length wise. So for my taste this story is way to long, and that it took twice as long as to get to the conclusion.

I would recommend this story to anyone who love sexy men, magical portions of it, fascinating sexual scenes, innuendos, and the mysteries in it all. I loved this story, but, it is not on my favorite list and that’s only because of the fact that it took too long to get through a story that had way to much descriptive parts then I am use to.
