Betrothed: A Faery Tale

by

Therese Woodson

Faery royalty have always married for duty rather than love. Prince Chrysanths should be no different – except with a human for a father, the prince known as Puck already is different. When he is betrothed against his will to Prince Sky, Puck flees to his father in the human world, only to have Sky follow.

Prince Sky Song of the Clouds isn’t thrilled with the prospect of marriage either, but is bound by duty to follow through. If he can’t win Puck over, the faery realm might very well dissolve into utter chaos.  Too busy arguing, Puck and Sky are unaware there are others with a vested interest in seeing the betrothal fail. In a bid for Puck’s crown, they’ll seek to keep them apart, even as Puck and Sky realize that duty and love don’t always have to be mutually exclusive.

Hi and welcome to the BETROTHED: A FAERY TALE blog tour.

The lovely folks here at MM Good Books are my first stop. Please follow me around the blog tour and get to know the faery princes Puck and Sky and how their world changes due to one (annoying) law. (Schedule: https://theresewritesthings.wordpress.com/2015/08/25/blog-tour-for-betrothed/)

The excerpt I’m sharing today is when Puck first realizes his life is about to take a drastic turn, and in his opinion, not for the better.

Az shook his head, laughing, green hair spilling over his forehead.

“Oh, and next time,” Puck continued, waving his hands for emphasis, “you could really just say your grandparents and mother want to see you. What was with all the formal court language back there?”

“Appearances, Prince Chrysanths. Besides, I should practice. I’ve become too lax around you, and someone might notice.”

“Oh my Earth, please don’t call me that again. It sounds so wrong coming from you. And who cares? You’re my best friend.”

Az shrugged. “People may be critical of a prince who is friends with a servant.”

“Ha! There are far more pressing issues concerning me than who I’m friends with. Or have you forgotten?”

“No reason to give anyone more to talk about.”

Puck raised an eyebrow. He and Az had been friends since they were children, and the sudden formality was weird. Almost as weird as Aster insisting on reviewing history Puck had learned years ago. And as Puck thought about it, he hadn’t been formally summoned in quite a while either.

Puck’s stomach suddenly sank to his knees. Something was happening, and from the stiff way Az held his body at Puck’s side, Puck wasn’t going to like it. He turned wide eyes toward the doors leading to the throne room, his palms slicking with sweat, his heart beating faster. He stopped in the corridor and grabbed Az’s arm, pulling him to a halt as well.

“Do you know why I’ve been summoned?”

Az looked away, refused to meet Puck’s eyes, his wings twitching. “Things are going to change, Prince Chrysanths.”

“Don’t call me that. Please, Az. What am I walking into?”

Az swallowed and ran a hand through his hair. “I’ve been in the garden today,” he said, staring at the moss carpet beneath their feet, “coaxing the fruit trees. And the hunters made several extra excursions this week.”

“Guests? Visitors from another kingdom? Who? Not that pompous Prince River, I hope.”

Az smiled slightly, but his reserved reaction wasn’t enough to quell the dread sneaking up Puck’s spine.

“Your mother will kill me if I tell you, but you have enough clues to figure it out on your own. You’re smarter than you look.”

Puck smiled weakly. He took a shaky breath, taking stock of what he knew. He had been called to an extra lesson with his tutor today. He’d initially thought it was a punishment, but what if it was a clue? Az’s rigid demeanor in place of their usual friendly  banter was another. Visitors. The lineage book. A lecture on the marriage law.

The marriage law.

Fuck.

Review: Betrothed: A Faery Tale is exactly what the title says and it was also a totally enjoyable book. Being that it was also the first book I’ve read by Therese Woodson, I don’t think I’d be opposed to reading more of her works. I loved the emotions of the MCs (very relatable) and in general I just loved the sweet romance that was told.

The story is about Prince Chrysanths, aka “Puck” (yes, like Shakespeare) of the Asteraceae and heir apparent to the Earthern/Wood faery throne. He also happens to be half human. And any keen biologist may also realise, there’s lots of flower scientific classification involved too (Asteraceae is the class which includes flowers like Chrysanthemums). Seriously, it gave this biologist here a thrill. He is sweet but he also has the tendency to be a bit spoilt, he is a child of two worlds (he visits his dad on the earth plane) but he hasn’t quite found his place in life yet.

Enter Prince Sky Song of the Clouds – and you guessed it, he’s of the type of faery associated with the element air. He’s a strong, silent and stoic sort of guy and knows that he must do his duty – to his family and his people.

There’s plenty of back story in the book itself which should satisfy any reader, but suffice to say that these two princes as part of a treaty must marry (hence the title). What starts as a selfish turn by Puck ends up to be an adventure that both princes needed and (most importantly) use the time to get to know each other before they tie the knot.

I really loved this book. It’s more than just a fantasy involving faeries. It’s also about fitting in and essentially gaining the maturity to grow up. The guys are easy to relate to, I especially like Sky’s character and their emotions are strong. The chemistry between the couple is also smoking, with the sexual tension maintained throughout the story. This is the type of feel good novel that any reader of the paranormal/fantasy genre is sure to enjoy.
