Connection Error

Annabeth Albert

It’s typical of video game programmer Josiah Simmons to be the last one on the plane on the way to the biggest meeting of his career. Though he’s (mostly) coping with his ADHD, he can’t handle another distraction. But he also can’t ignore his rugged seatmate—especially once he learns the military man’s a fan of his game.

Ryan Orson refuses to let his severe injuries pause his career as a navy SEAL. He’s got hours of grueling physical therapy ahead of him, and no time for anything that might get in the way of his return to active duty. But that doesn’t mean he’s above a little first-class flirtation with geeky-cute Josiah.

When a delay strands the pair in St. Louis, they agree to share a hotel room and a night of gaming. Neither expects their new connection to move to the next level in the light of day. Opposites may attract, but is this game over before it’s even begun?

Exclusive Excerpt

Thank you so much for having me! I’m so excited to celebrate the release of CONNECTION ERROR, which stars a computer game developer and an injured Navy SEAL. For this exclusive excerpt, I picked a scene that one of my early readers loved so much that she emailed me about it. This is the lead-in to what turns into a sexy first time for my duo… Enjoy!

****

“Stop glowering at me,” Josiah ordered. “I’m about three seconds away from jumping you, and your scowling is making me forget how damn happy I am to see you.”

“I’m happy to see you too,” Ryan admitted. He patted the bed next to him. He wanted to get back to that happy spontaneous feel he’d had at the airport, elusive as it seemed to be. “Get over here.”

“Happily.” Josiah kissed him almost the second he sat down and they both tumbled back against the bed in short order, tongues tangling, lips reacquainting. More than he ever had before, Ryan slowed things down, explored Josiah’s reactions to little touches. Telling all those second thoughts to shove it, Ryan pulled both their shirts off, and the first contact of their chests meeting made him gasp.

Panting, Josiah pulled away. “Can we fuck? Please. I’ve been waiting over two months to see if you can make good on all your filthy promises.”

Ryan’s heart got all tangled up with his lungs, and it took him a second to answer.

“Yeah…” His voice was too soft with none of his usual confidence. Fuck.

“That didn’t sound very enthusiastic.” Jos peered into his eyes. “What’s wrong? Would you rather just jerk it?”

“No, I want to fuck,” Ryan growled. “It’s just…positioning.”

“Positioning?” Josiah’s head tilted, then he grinned. “Oh you mean like finding a comfortable position to do it?”

“Yeah,” Ryan admitted. “Hate that it’s an issue—”

“I don’t.” Josiah’s grin was wide and genuine. “How about we keep trying things until we find one that works? That sounds fun!”

“Fun?” Ryan echoed. “It’s not a pain?” It sure was for him—he’d rather be doing anything than having this awkward-as-fuck conversation.

“God, no.” Josiah gave Ryan a resounding kiss. “Remember you’re talking to me. ADHD guy. I’m the one who sometimes gets bored and distracted. You ordering us to switch like some sexy-ass Twister game sounds like the best idea I’ve had all month.”

“You’re something else.” Ryan pulled him close, throat thick.

“Don’t thank me. Doing this with you is about all I’ve been able to think about lately. We’ll experiment until we figure it out.”

Right then, as Ryan looked into his guileless blue eyes, he tumbled another few yards down the so-far-gone path. He was falling for this guy, and there wasn’t a damn thing he could do to stop it.

Review: So you know when you get just the perfect combination of characters? A broken hero who’s both mentally and physically in a bad place, and a geeky, overenthusiastic, full of life young man who has his own demons to fight but who can’t help but dive into life with enthusiasm and a cheery energy that rubs off on people; this is what kept me up until early hours of the morning because even though this book wasn’t overly sexual, it was just so damn good!

Ryan is a double amputee, a SEAL whose latest mission went horribly wrong; Ryan is going through rehab with hopes that he’ll be able to return to active duty soon. Josiah isn’t Ryan’s type, but his bubbly nature and his unending energy draws Ryan to him in ways he can’t explain. What I love about Ryan is that he doesn’t let his situation bring him down and the loss of his legs doesn’t make him socially awkward. He flirts up a storm with Josiah, but he’s also determined to keep his private life locked away nice and tight.

Josiah’s ADHD is affecting every day of his life; that kid’s a mess on a good day, but he’s also a sweetheart whose lack of filter causes him to land in all kinds of uncomfortable situations. His character was funny and entertaining and the complete opposite of Ryan.

I liked Ryan and Jos together, they are the polar opposites who fit together perfectly. Ryan calms Jos down and helps him focus, while Jos lifts Ryan’s spirits when unwanted news bring him down. I’m not too sure about the chemistry between them, it was a bit off, but that doesn’t mean we don’t get quite a few steamy scenes. It was hard for me to see their sexual relationship clearly, but that might be because of Ryan’s struggles with sex since there’s nothing sexual about that kind of angst and insecurity.

This is a great series, no doubt about it, and I’m excited for the next book; we all know there are plenty of geeky gamers waiting for their HEA to be written.
