Embracing His Syn

(Sequel to Nothing Special)

by

A.E. Via

Sergeant Corbin ‘Syn’ Sydney had dedicated his life to becoming the best detective. So when he heard there was an opening on the notorious Atlanta Narcotics Task Force, he jumped at the chance. But, what he wasn’t ready for was realizing just how lonely he’d made himself, when he observed the loving and dedicated relationship between the two men he served under: Lieutenant Cashel ‘God’ Godfrey and Lieutenant Leonidis Day.

Syn prepared himself to accept his lonely fate until he walked into a small pub and met the long-haired, tattooed bartender, Furious Barkley. Before Syn can even understand why, he’s overcome with feelings he barely recognizes: passion, yearning, craving. And if the dark, lustful gazes are anything to go by, Furious might be feeling the same things for him.

Just two thing needs to happen before Syn and Furi can give each other what’s been missing from their lives for so long… Syn needs to find the evidence that proves Furi’s innocence of murder, as well as protect him from a past that refuses to let go.

God, Day, Ronowski, and Johnson are still as entertaining as ever…

You’ll swoon over God’s massive take-charge attitude…

You’ll laugh hysterically at Day’s never-ending wit…

You’ll fall in love with Furious’ mysterious, sexy demeanor…

and…

You’ll embrace Syn…

Excerpt

“Uh oh. Stranger danger.”

Syn looked behind him but no one was there.

“I mean you. You just gonna stand there and stare, man?” Furious raised his head and turned slowly, pinning Syn with a hot glance.

“Name’s –”

“Yeah. I know your name, you told me already.” Furious cut him off. “Your cologne will give you away every time.”

Syn stepped a little closer. “Does it smell that bad?”

“Nope. Smells that good,” he said on an exhale of smoke.

Syn unintentionally let a small smile creep up on him. Now that he had approached Furi, he was at a complete loss as to what to say or do. He had absolutely no idea why he was approaching this man … any man. Furious’ eyes were as dark as night, his eyelashes dark and long, just brushing his cheek when he looked down. Syn looked his fill, while Furious watched him curiously.

“I like your ink,” Syn blurted out, cringing a bit when it came out a little louder than he planned. “The stars are pretty cool.”

Furious took a deep inhale of his cigarette, blew the smoke out through his nose and flicked the butt into the street. He rose up off the back of the bench standing to his full height, perhaps six-one. “You know what people assume about a person when they have star tattoos, don’t you?” Furious held his eye contact.

“I’ve heard some things. Not one to believe everything I hear though.”

“Is that right?”

Syn scrunched his eyebrows not knowing where Furious was going with this – hell, where he was going with this.

“You waiting on the bus?”

“You got it, genius. How’d you ever guess that?”

“You’re a real smart ass … and the name’s Syn. I thought I’d keep you company while you wait … maybe even offer you a ride.” Syn’s face was tight as he spoke. Why the hell did everyone have to be so fucking sarcastic all the time?

“Oh really.” Furious tucked his ear buds inside his jacket and ran his hand through his hair. “Why the hell would you offer me a ride?”

“Why wouldn’t I? You obviously need one. I’m just trying to be friendly.” Syn stepped closer and he heard a slight catch in Furious’ breath.

“I’m good, man. I got a ride.”

Syn turned when he heard the diesel engine of the MARTA bus pulling over to stop.

“I could drop you off, it’s no big deal.” Syn shrugged as if it really didn’t matter. Oh, but it did.

Why the hell am I trying so hard?

“I’m good. Besides, I don’t ride with strangers.”

The bus’s air brakes were loud as it came to a stop and the automatic doors opened.

“Say it,” Syn snapped suddenly.

Furious turned to look at him from the stairs of the bus. “Say what?”

“My name, damnit.”

“Why?” Furious almost whispered.

“Because, I want to hear it from your mouth.” Syn’s voice had gone gravelly. He was being honest. He did want to hear it. Now. Later. And ten octaves higher ricocheting off his bedroom walls. Hell.

“No,” Furious replied, turned, and got on the bus.

For some reason, Syn watched as his new, enigmatic friend paid his fare and settled himself in the back on the far side of the bus. Furious never looked in his direction, but Syn kept hoping he would as the driver pulled the large vehicle back into traffic.

Review: Embracing His Syn, by A.E. Via, in my opinion, is her best book, to date. If you haven’t read her other titles, you will still be able to follow along comfortably. Characters from previous books are mentioned and God and Day, from Nothing Special, have a pretty big role in this book. However, don’t let that stop you if you want to jump on this one right away. I imagine after you read this one you will be running to get the rest anyway. I know I would if I didn’t have them already.

What pulls me to this author is her writing style. From the first book she published I connected and was hooked. She writes with a flair that is unforgiving. She doesn’t sugar coat her characters. If they are rough and tough, she allows them to be. If they are unsure or have misgivings about their sexuality, or their performance level on the job, whatever the situation, she gives them time to work through it. She takes them through the paces they need to be the best they can be for themselves. Once they reach that understanding then they are much better for their partner.

Syn is a detective on the task force with God and Day. He has concentrated so heavily on his own career, plus trying to live up to his dad’s expectations, he has never dated or pursued any type of romantic relationships. He thinks of himself as straight even though he and his ex – roommate seemed to have some friends with benefits moments. He doesn’t even give it much thought until a prank was played on him that left him mad and irate at his team members. So to cool off he heads across the street to a bar he noticed earlier.

Furious, but better known as Furi, has been working his Uncle’s bar for quite a while. He also does some solo movie takes with a porn company trying to earn extra money. He and his best friend want to open a garage which has been a lifelong dream of his to fulfil. He is hiding, more or less, from an abusive husband he ran from, but realizes its past time to get the divorce he so desperately needs.

Syn doesn’t understand the feelings and thoughts he has when he lays eyes on Furi. All he knows is that he needs to pursue this spark or connection he is pretty certain they both feel. However, Furi is not going to make it easy on him. He knows Syn’s type, and will not put himself in that position, again. A position he is sure will only make him feel used as an experiment come morning. Syn is very persistent and persuasive when he sees something he wants. And he wants Furi, in the worst way. Unsure and confused feelings will not keep him from seeking what he is sure to be the best time he has had in, well……..ever.

While Syn spends his days getting use to his new team and its members, specifically God and Day, who can be annoying and an aggravation, Furi is trying to settle up last minute porn clips, finish his school work so he can graduate, and get his business he is co-partnering with his best friend Doug up and running. He continually thinks of Syn and is ready to see where it may lead when one of his co-workers on the set is murdered. How will Furi react when he realizes Syn is a detective on the case? A detective who now knows everything about him and may be looking at him now as a suspect instead of a bed partner. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the cops have notified his soon to be ex-husband of his whereabouts. The tension is thick, and your nerves are on edge.

Syn is good at his job, great actually, and also very strong and passionate about doing the right thing. He is taken back a bit when every instinct he has is telling him to protect Furi, not only from a vigilante on the warpath killing male porn stars, but from an abuser and stalker who is not taking getting served with divorce papers well. Furi realizes he likes Syn in alpha mode, likes it a lot, feels protected and cherished, something that he hasn’t known before.  One thing Furi demands and Syn is on board right from get-go is who will take charge in the bedroom. Syn admits to Furi he has never been with a man all the way. He is enthralled by Furi’s long hair and tattoos and has no problem with Furi taking the lead. He has to be in control all day, on the job, but at night, in the bedroom, he is eager for Furi to take charge.

A.E. Via will absolutely melt your insides and make you feel giddy with the passion and chemistry she instills in her characters. You will feel more than connected by the details and descriptions she vividly captures in their lovemaking. I love the scenes she candidly puts her characters in never shying away from the actions. They are intense and explosive and will have you completely captivated with the moment. She pulls you in and hooks you never letting up as you white knuckle your tablet forgetting to breathe until the scene is over.  The sex between Furi and Syn is addicting and HOT. Talking and screaming out their passion and wants during these intense moments will make you sweat right along with them.

This author will have you stimulated by the events and the storyline. She writes incredible sex scenes between lovers but just as important, she has very intriguing dialogue with real life problems that will pull you in just as deep. She allows her characters to grow as the story unfolds. They make mistakes as we all do but they also learn from said mistakes and work to overcome any misgivings in order to not only be a great work partner but an amazing bed partner. There will be suspense, some angst, and hardships that will have you locked in fear causing watery eyes to spill over. In the next breath you will be laughing at their humour and finding yourself smiling from ear to ear.

A.E. Via hits every button, every want that I have while reading a book. She expresses powerful and hypnotic storylines and her prose is tight with details and events. She writes erotic sex that will have you glued to the pages. She writes dominant men who are also passionate and caring. Her men are beautiful, sincere, and very strong.  Her men are alpha in the truest form but they want love and the want to give love in return. And they do, wow, do they ever. I recommend this story highly if you like strong storylines with strong characters who are not afraid to turn their pleasure over to their partners who will see to it that everything they reach for is there for the taking whether in the bedroom or out of it.
