Callum Ross has a tough decision to make. After years of working for the covert ops agency in the UK and owning his own security firm in the US, he’s forced to choose between the business he loves, and the new fragile relationship with his partner, Josh Cooper.

A bottle of whiskey and almost being killed by a motorbike helps Cal make the decision, and he moves to the UK with plans to set up his own security consultancy. Then the head of the covert ops agency where Josh now works asks Cal for help. Agency operatives and their families are being injured or killed, including Cal’s friends.

Cal is asked to investigate with Josh’s assistance. As the number of victims increase, they’re aware either of them could be the next target for the killer. Josh wants Cal to back away from the investigation in case he gets hurt, but Cal refuses, putting a strain on their relationship.

Then they discover the motorbike incident wasn’t an accident. Who tried to kill him, and why?

Prologue

1st October 2016

The partially-formed bruises and bloody injuries on the corpse told its own story, as it lay cradled by the coca plants. Callum Ross had found his missing informant. He knelt beside Tomaz’s body and let out a huge sigh. “Fuck.”

“Is this who you were looking for, senor?”

The young boy hung back, not wanting to come too close. Cal couldn’t say he blamed him. This probably wasn’t the first dead body the boy had seen, and probably wouldn’t be his last.

“Yes, this is him.” Cal glanced over his shoulder and tried to smile reassuringly. “Do you know Father Juan?”

“Si, senor.”

Cal dug in his pocket and brought out another roll of US dollars. He peeled a couple off and held them out to the boy. “Bring him here.”

No more than ten years old, the boy shifted his weight uneasily from foot to foot. “Senor…” He stared longingly at the money. Cal waited, knowing the boy was scared and wondering if his need for money would outweigh his fear.

“He was a good man. A father.” Cal gentled his voice. “He needs the last rites.”

The boy snatched the money and ran off back the way they had come. Cal reckoned he had a fifty-fifty chance of the boy returning with the priest. The boy, one of the street urchins who populated the city streets, had been starving enough to come to Cal with information about his missing informant, but beyond that? Cal would be lucky to see the boy again.

Whatever the drug gang had done to him, death had come hard to Tomaz. The pain and horror was still etched into his face.

“No easing into the long goodnight,” Cal muttered. “I’m sorry, Tomaz.”

Tomaz had been his informant for a couple of years, since Cal had arrived in the area to investigate the local drug and guns cartel. Tomaz had lost two younger brothers to the cartel and, unlike many in the area, was anxious to help. And he’d paid the ultimate price.

Cal stayed where he was, holding vigil by Tomaz, until footsteps behind him made him look up. To his relief, and surprise, Father Juan stood a few feet away. There was no sign of the boy.

“Buenas dias, senor,” the priest said, a wary expression in his eyes. “You have a soul in need of the last rites?”

““I’m sorry, Father, it’s too late for your help.” Cal stood, stretching his back. He caught Father Juan’s resigned expression.

“Why did you bring me here?”

“Because I didn’t want to be overheard.” Cal stepped to one side so the priest could see Tomaz.

“I warned him.” The priest’s words reeked with disapproval.

“Warned him?”

“I told Tomaz not to get involved with gringos. I said it was dangerous. And now look.” He curled his lip at Cal.

“He wanted to help because of his brothers.”

“And this is where it got him.”

Cal couldn’t answer that. Father Juan was right. Thanks to Tomaz’s help, Cal had managed to infiltrate the local drug cartel, but his cover had been blown and now Tomaz was dead. A strong warning to anyone else foolish enough to go against the cartel.

“Just take care of Tomaz,” Cal said wearily. “I’ll pay for the funeral.”

“Not everything is solved by dollars, senor.” Cal raised his eyebrow, waiting, and the priest eventually nodded. “You’ll take care of his family?”

“I’ll do what I can.” Cal hissed as he rolled his shoulders.

Father Juan narrowed his eyes. “You’re hurt, senor?”

Cal studied the long narrow scratches down his right forearm and mentally thanked his handler for ensuring he was up to date with his tetanus injections. “I caught it on the wire over there.”

Waves of suspicion rolled off the priest but he knelt down beside Tomaz. Cal waited with his head bowed as Father Juan said a prayer. Cal had left his church going days long behind him, but the rituals always gave him comfort.

Morning My Angel

Josh Cooper, top US security field agent, is sent on an inter-agency assignment to London, when a partner in his firm goes missing in suspicious circumstances. Used to working in sole charge of his well-honed team, he clashes heads with the handsome, but pompous Cal, his UK co-operator and superior. Josh’s gut tells him something is wrong. He’s being kept out of the loop and Cal’s agenda is running on a different path.

He also has a personal issue to deal with. He’s involved in a cyber-relationship with “Charlie”, an unknown man who connected with Josh by accident. Their banter has led to deeper respect and a sexual interest, but now Josh is faced with a growing attraction to Cal. Between this conflict and the tension of the mission, Josh’s heart and head are overworked and confused. Things can’t get much worse.

Then Josh discovers the enemies he’s seeking have a new target: him.

Review: This story is part of a series and must be read in order.

With Cal and Josh’s relationship beginning to feel the strain with the men living and working thousands of miles apart it takes a near miss with Josh’s life for Cal to finally realize that he can’t live without the man he loves and he flies to England to re-join his Angel… and lands in the middle of a mystery when its discovered that The Agency is being targeted as Agency operatives and family members are being killed in seemingly random ‘accidents’.

Well, this story is a journey of danger and excitement that doesn’t just quit. Sue Brown has written a story that grabs you by the throat and refuses to let go, which actually really surprised me as Sue Brown is not usually quite as ruthless in her delivery of a story but god damn it really worked and nearly had me frothing at the mouth when I read the last line (I contemplated hunting Ms Brown down for the next story in the series).

Cal, Josh and their friends in the Agency are thrown into the deep end as they race to find the culprit who is murdering and attacking those who have a connection to the Agency, nobody is safe and anyone could be next. It’s a desperate race against time and they lose family and friends as the killer pulls strings playing a deadly game, and Cal and Josh discover moles in the Agency.

This is a brilliant story that keeps you on the edge of your seat, it has you growling in frustration as delays cost lives, it has you feeling wrung out as a moles identity is revealed, it has you gasping in shock as the dead drop before your eyes and it has you desperate for the next instalment as you read the last page.

I recommend this to those who adore action packed, danger filled love stories, who love great characters who are fighting for their lives, who love an author who can weave a tale that just gets better with every turn of the page, and who have love-hate relationships with fantastically good cliffhanger endings.
