Hostile Ground

by

L.A. Witt & Aleksandr Voinov

Enemy territory is a dangerous place to fall in love.

After the deaths of three undercover cops investigating a drug ring in a seedy strip club in Seattle, Detective Mahir Hussain has been sent to finish the job. He joins the club’s security team in the hopes of finding enough evidence to bust the operation before the men in charge find a reason to put him in a shallow grave.

To protect the strippers, only gay men can work the club. Ridley, the cold and intimidating head of security, knows exactly how to test potential new hires—including Mahir. From the minute they meet, Mahir and Ridley engage in a dangerous dance of sex and mind games. Mahir needs to find his evidence before Ridley figures out he’s a cop—and before they both grow too close to betray one another.

As the game goes on, Mahir burrows deeper into the operation, where he learns there’s much more happening than meets the eye . . . and why every cop who made it this far has been silenced with a bullet.

Hostile Ground is available May 12th from Riptide Publishing.

L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer currently living in the glamorous and ultra-futuristic metropolis of Omaha, Nebraska, with her husband, two cats, and a disembodied penguin brain that communicates with her telepathically. In addition to writing smut and disturbing the locals, L.A. is said to be working with the US government to perfect a genetic modification that will allow humans to survive indefinitely on Corn Pops and beef jerky. This is all a cover, though, as her primary leisure activity is hunting down her arch nemesis, erotica author Lauren Gallagher, who is also said to be lurking somewhere in Omaha.

 L. A.’s backlist is available on her website, and updates (as well as random thoughts and the odd snarky comment) can be found on her blog or on Twitter (@GallagherWitt).

Review: These two authors certainly have a great thing going between them. Their ability to create intense stories with unique characters is amazing, and they make you swoon with their heart-stopping action/erotic scenes.

In this book, I was enthralled with Mahir, a Muslim Syrian, born in America. This character was definitely one that made you stop and take a good look at how he was depicted, how his religion and roots affected his life, his emotions, and eventually his every step in his life. I think you can only truly appreciate the brilliance of this character and his family, when you are a part of a minority yourself. The discrimination and slurs that come with certain treats of your appearance and culture, their effect upon your psyche and life are hard to comprehend when you’ve not been there. Honestly, the character build was exquisite work on these authors’ part. I loved even more the blurring lines between Mahir the cop and Saeed the “thug”. How they pointed out that one could easily be the other if only a wrong turn had been made in the past. The struggle Mahir had to keep his reality and still be able to emerge in his other persona was so real, I loved it.

So this is an action/crime story. Mahir is an undercover cop who tries to investigate not only a drug ring, but also find out the reason every undercover cop that has tried to affiliate the organization has ended up dead. There is extreme danger in what he’s trying to do and the most dangerous part of all beside the drug Lord himself is his second in command, Ridley.
And here we see yet another brilliant work at depicting the villain. Making a character so solid, so dark and dangerous, making us fear and tremble simply reading about him, yet still love it when those dangerous feelings mix with the eroticism he brings to the table. Mahir, in order to shake any suspicions from him, gets into an incredibly intense relationship with his “boss”. He fears Ridley, he knows how dangerous this guy is, but he still surrenders to this forceful, domineering man, who is commanding him in ways he never thought possible. The guilt and loathing crash with the cravings and wanting to give himself to a man who at the same time he is determined to put behind bars.

The first part of this book is absolutely mind-blowing, the adrenaline of the lurking danger floods your body, and mind as you read it. Ridley is astonishing in his cold, dangerous, and irresistible package. You want to kill him even as you find yourself wanting to give him a bit more time because damn it, he’s sexy as hell.

But as the story evolves and new elements come to light, a few surprises change this entire read from forbidden to gut-wrenching anxiety, and the plot becomes a bit more. The tension get higher as Mahir finds himself in an even more precarious situation that he ever thought possible, his life being not the only one in the line anymore, and everything seems to hopelessly crash and burn there for a while.

In general, this is a very good book, a very intense story, one you can easily get lost into and above all, it takes you apart with the mind and erotic games. However I had a moment there during the end, when everything was at stake and Mahir’s real life clashed with his undercover persona, that made me stop and literally take a couple of steps back. I came out of this enthralling grip the story had on me and was somehow put off by what followed. The story became a bit ludicrous especially as Mahir didn’t contact his superior when things got complicated. I felt that was beyond unrealistic and that no cop ever would go down that path and leave things to chance and fate and hope. Even the very end of this operation was a bit surreal.

The end scene in the club was hazy and vague at best. The image provided was crippled and left too many questions that were not answered at all. The epilogue had its flaws too for me, as it still continued to use the undercover name for a character that should have been by now right out there in the open. Basically, the last 1/3 of this book was not to my satisfaction and left me with lots of questions. And above all, I would have liked to see the couple and their interaction finally in a safe environment when every threat was off their heads.

Overall though I enjoyed the majority and had great fun reading this book. It remains a pleasure and a challenge reading anything from these two authors. Recommended!
