Midnight Rodeo: Homecoming

(Anthology)

by

B.A. Tortuga, Kiernan Kelly & Julia Talbot

What happens when rodeos start to get too tough for humans to compete in? Midnight Rodeo, of course, where supernatural creatures like shifters and vampires work for the prize money, and for the awe of their audience.

In Welcome to the Pack by BA Tortuga, when head bullfighter Denton is killed by a demon bull, his twin, Denver, comes back to take his place. Denver was gone for years, working mundane rodeos and missing his twin. He’s not sure the pack can heal him since the other bullfighters challenge Denver at every turn. All except Blaine, who’s an outcast himself, and who knows Denver is like no one he’s ever met.

In Oklahoma Rain by Kiernan Kelly, psychic Blaze scouts locations for the rodeo company, Darque and Knight, where he finds another psychic talent, Zack, who’s hot as the Fourth of July. Zack is complicated, though, thanks to his sidekick, Mikey, a damaged kid. Blaze invites the pair back to the rodeo, but not everyone is as happy as Blaze to have them there.

In Big Bear, Little Bear, by Julia Talbot, bear shifter Ben is returning to the rodeo after a long injury recovery. Big bear shifter Ozzie is the barrel man and clown, and he’s been waiting for Ben to come back to the big show. But is Ben ready to ride again, let alone be the lover Ozzie is ready to take on?

Excerpt

Denver was– wow.

Denton had been stunning, making Blaine stare a lot. A lot. Still, Dent had been off-limits, and he’d bet Denver was, too. No one could be that hot and be like Blaine.

He was the weird one, the one brought into the pack by a she-wolf who had already had a single pup. Blaine figured he was lucky no one had killed him when he was a kid.

Everyone else was broad and wide, shaggy headed with eyes like green glass. All of them came from the same line. Denver was the spitting image of Denton, really. A little harder around the edges, a little more wild. A shit ton more bruised.

The guys had been taking turns. Two a night, just like clockwork, they’d come and challenge Denver. One at midnight, one at three a.m. Greg and Vince went, then Carter and Caul, and finally Hank and Mike. Boom.

He supposed Denver was waiting for him, now. Blaine sighed. He had no intention of trying to take the pack. God, the very idea made his head hurt.

The real question was, were they going to just start over, or was Denver going to get a night off, a chance to sleep before they settled in town for tonight’s show?

Review: Midnight Rodeo: Homecoming is a brilliant anthology of stories. Three brilliant authors worked together to bring us unique stories of the supernatural world where we can sink into a rodeo that’s like nothing we have ever seen before and has wonderful characters  who we can get behind and love, let me introduce you to the great stories that can be found.

Welcome to the pack: B.A. Tortuga: ♥♥♥♥ 4 Hearts

Denver has worked the mundane (human) rodeo circuit for years but when he gets the call that his twin brother, Denton, was killed by a demon bull he knows it’s time to go home and pick up the reins as the leader of his pack at Darque and Knight rodeo. Blaine is the low man on the totem, a mixed breed who isn’t really treated like pack but when the new alpha comes home everything begins to change.

This is a great story where we learn a lot about the setup of the rodeo and some of the key characters that we see throughout the anthology. Denver knows that he has a fight on his hands to keep his place as alpha of the rodeo pack but he is determined to do it for his beloved twin brother. What he finds is a shaky pack and clear divides between the other supernaturals and it doesn’t take him long to reconnect with old friendships and forge new bridges, but he also has to deal with two upstarts and a demon bull who killed his brother. Blaine is impressed with Denver from the first second he sees him, and is amazed when Denver makes him feel like pack straightaway, Blaine is also surprised that Denver is as attracted to him as he is to Denver.

Denver and Blaine make an excellent couple who support each other and back each other well, there’s also lots of need and want between them so there’s some extra hot action between these two bullfighters. The story is a really good one and I loved the way that it progressed and that although there were clashes and fights it wasn’t over the top. We get some really good world building as the demons, Nightmares, ghosts, other shifters and vampires are revealed to us. The characters in this story are very connected to their base feelings so with Denver and Blaine they are very sex, food, comfort; they act more wolfish than human in their wants and needs. There is nothing human acting about this story; it’s a supernatural rodeo for supernaturals so don’t expect human ideals.

So if you love the supernatural acting like supernatural, struggles and fights, hot sex and great characters then you will love this story.

In Oklahoma Rain: Kiernan Kelly: ♥♥♥♥ 3 – 3 ½ Hearts

Blaze may look like a mundane but he is an important asset at Darque and Knight Rodeo, he scouts the locations for the rodeo and with his psychic ability he ensures no humans discover the truth about the rodeo.  When scouting their newest location Blaze discovers a supernatural and a mundane child hiding out in an abandoned house, Blaze makes an offer when he hears their story hoping his bosses will give a helping hand to the cute telekinetic, Zack, and the silent child Mikey. Zack has been moving around and just surviving since his parents died when he was young, when he rescued Mikey from a vicious attack he took the human kid under his wing and they have been together struggling to survive ever since. When he meets Blaze he finds himself wary of hoping but he soon settles in to the rodeo, but he fights his attraction to Blaze. Not everything is perfect though, there’s a troll who has it out for Blaze and hates mundanes so Mikey has to be protected, and when the troll strikes Blaze has to stop Zack from tearing the troll apart.

This is a great story where the more human looking psychics have their turn. Blaze has no outward sign that he is supernatural and it has made him a target from those who hate humans, one in particular just won’t leave him alone. Zack is finally happy to have somewhere that’s safe but he wishes he could get Mikey to speak, the security that the rodeo offers is wonderful for both of them and the work is something easy for Zack and his telekinetic powers but he is unsure about giving in to his feelings for Blaze. Blaze won’t push Zack and has already thrown down his challenge and when their attraction is fulfilled they have the danger that follows as the troll finally acts.

This is a great story where we see another part of the rodeo, this time we see the setting up of the rodeo and the people involved with it. Zack and Blaze’s relationship is one of friendship and support, the attraction is there between them but something inside Zack has him holding back. Mikey is a cute little bugger who has suffered a trauma that has him silent, he gets protected by those who come to care for him and he steals many hearts. While the story is very good and there are supernatural leanings it is a more human outlook for Zack and Blaze as their reactions are much more like humans than supernatural ones.

If you love more human like supernaturals, danger from trolls, psychic abilities, great characters and a very happy ending then you will adore this story.

Big Bear, Little Bear: Julia Talbot: ♥♥♥♥ 3 ½ – 4 Hearts

Ben handles the horses for the riders and has wanted Ozzie the grizzly bear for a long time but Ozzie put him off, after a terrible injury Ben is finally returning to the rodeo and he doubts that Ozzie would want a bear who might never be a bear again. Ozzie is the barrel man and clown and has always wanted the little black bear but thought he was too young, now that Ben is back Ozzie feels it might be time to show Ben just how much he was missed. But Ben isn’t really healed properly and both Ben and Ozzie are concerned when Ben’s bear won’t come out and when Ben begins to sink into danger it is Ozzie who discovers the truth about Ben’s healing.

Ohh we have two great bears who finally embark on a relationship after a terrible accident nearly killed one of them. Ben had been rejected by Ozzie when he took a hoof to the head and after a long recovery he is healthy enough to return to the rodeo but with limited duties, Ozzie is very happy to have his little bear back and sets out to prove it. As they spend time together Ozzie notices that Ben’s bear doesn’t come out, he also notices that his medication doesn’t seem right and is determined to get to the bottom of what is wrong with Ben.

Both Ozzie and Ben are adorable together and we are back to the characters going with their base natures of bears; honey, berries and fish hmmm LOL There’s no conflict in this one other than an argument with a mama bear but there is a little danger for Ben as the medication overcomes him. Ozzie is wonderful as the older bigger bear who realizes that pushing the younger bear away was a mistake and he rectifies it, pulling Ben towards him and looking after him. Ben is just adorable, he has always had stars in his eyes for Ozzie and although he isn’t sure if him being broken is good enough for Ozzie he still accepts what Ozzie offers him.

If you love bear shifters finally working it out, a grizzly doing everything he can for his mate, accepting help and praise and a very happy ending then you will love this story.
