Review: This is the first book I’ve read by PD Singer and certainly is an author I’d love to revisit. I knew that Otter Chaos was going to be quirky and fun from the get go because let’s face it, otters are adorable. This is a different type of shifter book. However, first off, the opening to the book is in fact the short story, Tail Slide, where the two MCs of Otter Chaos meet.
Tail Slide is a fantastic introduction to these characters, Lon and Corey, as well as giving the reader a bit of a heads up as to how the rules of the shifters in this world behave. Well, the otter shifters at least. I would say without having the benefit of reading Tail Slide the beginning of Otter Chaos would be confusing and probably less enjoyable.
Now, let’s get back to Otter Chaos.
Lon is an otter shifter and like any shifter needs to spend time in his fur. He has to be careful how much time he spends as his animal because he doesn’t want to lose his humanity completely, even with the water literally calling for him to spend time.
Corey is his boyfriend who is taking the whole “my boyfriend is a shifter” thing really well (as you saw the beginning of in Tail Slide). Now that they are together, they need to learn to cohabitate and deal with each other’s quirks. They also need to deal with the threat of werewolves potentially destroying a threatened population of native fish.
Lon and Corey are absolutely wonderful together. Lon in his otter skin is absolutely adorable. I really liked the twist on the usual shifter thing where Lon is aware in his otter form but he doesn’t think human. He thinks more along the lines of a playful child, which is because otters are cute and exuberant (though I seen those buggers fighting over fish at the zoo, gee they’re vicious too). The incident with the koi pond is absolutely hilarious but it just goes to show how great a guy Corey is.
There is only one reason why I did not give this a 5 star review and that is because I felt that the story tended to drag in places. I loved the story, don’t get me wrong, I’ve just raved about it, but sometimes the pace was just too slow.
However, the romance is sweet and the otters are cute, what more could a lover of shifter stories want?
