Concierge Service

by

P.D. Singer

Joshua Hannes, the concierge of the Vivaldi Central Park Hotel prides himself on fulfilling every impossible request. Tickets to a sold-out show? A purple dye job for a purse dog? A last-minute table at a premier hotspot? No problem.

But the devastatingly handsome penthouse guest wants what?

Self-made billionaire Craig Ridley’s in New York on business, but at the end of the day, he wants to relax with someone interesting. The concierge should be able to supply a friendly face. Just for a little conversation. Dinner and a card game. Not sex with a man he doesn’t know or respect.

Craig didn’t expect the concierge to personally volunteer. Nor to be the man Craig hadn’t known he needed.

A billion reasons why they shouldn’t be together. A billion and one reasons why they should.

A smoldering standalone romance with an HEA.

Otter Chaos

by

P.D. Singer

Lon Ewing snowboarded in and turned economist Corey Levigne’s life upside down, introducing him to a world he didn’t know existed. Corey’s still adjusting to a boyfriend who shifts into an otter and raids the koi pond—and now Lon says Corey’s department chair is a werewolf?

Wolves at the university, wolves in the bank—across Lon’s desk sits Professor Melvin Vadas and his hench-wolves, demanding a construction loan for the pack’s new lodge in the mountains. There’s just one little problem: the proposed building site is home to a breeding population of rare fish.

What do wolves care for stupid human rules, an otter who’d barely make a good snack, or one pesky human determined to protect the environment? Once they’re snout to snout with Corey and Lon there’s more than silverscale dace on the Endangered Species list.

Includes Tail Slide (the short that kicked off otter madness)

Fresh powder snow and running water in the Colorado back country call Lon like the moon calls the wolves. Belly-sliding to a good time on the weekends makes up for a workweek at a desk, and meeting Corey adds a whole new level of fun to snowboarding.

It’s easy to slip away for time alone in the woods without raising suspicion, but how’s Lon to entertain himself when bad snow and a worse spill force them off the mountain too early?

Never give an otter a box of Cheerios.

Review: This is the first book I’ve read by PD Singer and certainly is an author I’d love to revisit. I knew that Otter Chaos was going to be quirky and fun from the get go because let’s face it, otters are adorable. This is a different type of shifter book. However, first off, the opening to the book is in fact the short story, Tail Slide, where the two MCs of Otter Chaos meet.

Tail Slide is a fantastic introduction to these characters, Lon and Corey, as well as giving the reader a bit of a heads up as to how the rules of the shifters in this world behave. Well, the otter shifters at least. I would say without having the benefit of reading Tail Slide the beginning of Otter Chaos would be confusing and probably less enjoyable.

Now, let’s get back to Otter Chaos.

Lon is an otter shifter and like any shifter needs to spend time in his fur. He has to be careful how much time he spends as his animal because he doesn’t want to lose his humanity completely, even with the water literally calling for him to spend time.

Corey is his boyfriend who is taking the whole “my boyfriend is a shifter” thing really well (as you saw the beginning of in Tail Slide). Now that they are together, they need to learn to cohabitate and deal with each other’s quirks. They also need to deal with the threat of werewolves potentially destroying a threatened population of native fish.

Lon and Corey are absolutely wonderful together. Lon in his otter skin is absolutely adorable. I really liked the twist on the usual shifter thing where Lon is aware in his otter form but he doesn’t think human. He thinks more along the lines of a playful child, which is because otters are cute and exuberant (though I seen those buggers fighting over fish at the zoo, gee they’re vicious too). The incident with the koi pond is absolutely hilarious but it just goes to show how great a guy Corey is.

There is only one reason why I did not give this a 5 star review and that is because I felt that the story tended to drag in places. I loved the story, don’t get me wrong, I’ve just raved about it, but sometimes the pace was just too slow.

However, the romance is sweet and the otters are cute, what more could a lover of shifter stories want?

 A New Man

 by

P.D. Singer

Senior year of college is for studying, partying, and having fun before getting serious about life. Instead, Chad’s days are filled with headaches and exhaustion, and his fencing skills are getting worse with practice, not better. Then there’s his nonexistent love life, full of girls he’s shunted to the friend zone. Is he asexual? Gay?

Grad student Warren Douglas could be out clubbing, but his roommate is better company, even without kisses. He’s torn up watching Chad suffer, gobbling ibuprofen and coming home early on Friday nights. If Chad weren’t straight, Warren would keep him up past midnight. They’re great as friends. Benefits might answer Chad’s questions.

A brief encounter with lab rats reveals Chad’s illness—he needs surgery, STAT, and can’t rely on his dysfunctional parents for medical decisions. Warren’s both trustworthy and likely to get overruled—unless they’re married. “You can throw me back later,” Warren says, and he may throw himself back after his husband turns out moody and hard to get along with, no matter how much fun his new sex drive is. Surgery turns Chad into a new man, all right…

…but Warren fell in love with the old one.

Review: Jake Landon and Kurt Carlson are still learning the basics of being in a relationship. They spent the entire summer under the stars in the Colorado Mountains and quickly went from friends and co-workers to lovers.

Now they’ve traded in their ranger uniforms for parkas and ski’s for their new home, new jobs at the exclusive Wapiti Creek Ski Resort. Forest fires have been replaced by jealous co-workers, misplaced affections and a secret the resort keeps that threatens Jake and Kurt’s still fragile relationship.

While there were still a few plot holes and unbelievable aspects to this story, I really enjoyed it far more than the first in this series. The character development and storyline were stronger, as were the secondary characters, and the descriptives in this story were more visually attainable for me.

There is no question that Jake and Kurt love each other, it is the day-to-day aspects of being a couple they are having trouble dealing with. Jake isn’t in the closet per say, but he won’t love Kurt openly, and this causes a bit of a strain. But at the end of the day they know what they mean to each other and Kurt is frustrated, but infinitely patient.

The narration was so much better this time around as well. Singer stuck with Finn Sterling who had a few issues telling the first story, in my opinion, but with this story, he found his footing. While he still used the same tone for Jake and Kurt, there were subtle inflections and nuances in this story that weren’t there before. Almost as if Sterling had to get acquainted with the characters before, he could really give them a voice.

Full of emotion, danger, and just the right amount of fluff, Snow on the Mountain is a fast, fun, thrill ride down the sometimes rocky slope of love. I’d recommend this read to all my fellow hopeless romantics.

Blurb: Take a break from academics, enjoy the Colorado Rockies, fight a fire now and then. That’s all Jake Landon expected when he signed up to be a ranger. He’ll partner with some crusty old mountain man; they’ll patrol the wilderness in a tanker, speak three words a day, and Old Crusty won’t be alluring at all. A national forest is big enough to be Jake’s closet—he’ll spend his free time fishing.

Except Old Crusty turns out to be Kurt Carlson: confident, competent, and experienced. He’s also young, hot, friendly, and considers clothing optional when it’s just two guys in the wilderness. Sharing a small cabin with this walking temptation is stressing Jake’s sanity—is he sending signals, or just being Kurt? And how would Kurt react if he found out his new partner wants to start a fire of a different kind? Jake’s terrified—they have to live together for five months no matter what.

Enough sparks fly between the rangers to set the trees alight, but it takes a raging inferno to make Jake and Kurt admit to the heat between them.

Review: Jake Landon takes a job as a park ranger to bide his time until he starts pharmacy school. He expected to be partnered with someone older and more seasoned, to pass his time waiting with working and fishing. He did not expect the distraction that is Kurt Carlson. Jake made the mistake once on acting on his attraction to another man, a friend, and it didn’t turn out so well. He is not about to make that mistake twice. In fact, Jake is so intent on ignoring his attraction to Kurt that he completely misses the signs pointing to that attraction, being a mutual feeling.

Kurt as well shared his feelings with someone in the past, only to be shot down and hurt in the process. And while Kurt doesn’t wave his rainbow flag, he is a very confident young man who tries to subtly tell his new partner he would like to put out HIS fire, not just the ones popping up on the mountain. It takes Kurt getting hurt and their lives endangered by an out of control fire before Kurt finally asks Jake for something more. When the danger subsides, Jake is left questioning if Kurt’s feelings were real, or just a mistake made in the heat of the moment.

While there was a lot of action and drama, and the backdrop of the picturesque mountains added a beauty to the storyline, the relationship between Jake and Kurt felt either forced or lacking at any given time. I wanted more of a connection between them. And what little they had didn’t come until toward the end of the book, and even then, it just didn’t fit with their personalities. A couple of times the words or phrases they chose to use seemed too juvenile for them as well. They were both very intelligent and driven, so I didn’t connect with them when they spoke like twelve-year-olds.

The thing that really saved this story for me and kept me going through to the end was the narration. I love the little nuances and inflections that Finn Sterling adds to the stories he tells. So I loved the scenery set in the Colorado Mountains and the narration, but the story itself was not quite there for me.

Blurb: Jake Landon thinks a second ranger season in the Colorado Rockies with Kurt Carlson is close enough to heaven, and a national forest is big enough to be his closet. Pharmacy school—and the luxuries of electricity and running water—can wait, maybe forever, as long as Jake doesn’t have to come out. He doesn’t plan on Kurt’s vision of his future being as narrow and direct as the single-track roads through the trees.

“Your future, your fear, and me,” Kurt tells Jake. “You can have two of the three, so choose wisely.” Jake may have no choices left after they stumble on armed men guarding a beautiful but deadly crop that doesn’t belong among the pines and spruces. Angry men with guns are only one danger in the Colorado wilderness, and Jake’s reluctance to come out is now his smallest problem.

Kurt’s skills and Jake’s silver tongue may not be enough to get them out of this mess—how much of the bloodshed on the mountain will be theirs?

Review: All right, so once again I’ll have to scream it out loud how much I love Kurt. That character makes everything fine for me. And because I love Kurt, so much I spend more than half of the book wanting to slap Jake silly. I mean I knew at some point thing would get better, but till they actually got there, I really envisioned ways of killing that little fictional character myself.
Anyway, so Blood on the Mountains continues with Jake and Kurt returning to their summer job, their little primitive cabin close to their natural refrigerator aka the lake, and with Jake living in his own panic room inside his head. This time the “coming out” talk is a bit more intense because the way he’s been acting is telling Kurt that he’s putting off of returning to college out of fear. Fear of living with Kurt in the big city and being out.

You know, one would’ve thought that after what happened a year ago when they nearly died and during the winter season Jake would have put some things into perspective, but near death experiences need to hunt him more than once to shake him, and even that in the end didn’t. Hence, I wanted to slap him silly.

The first half of the book in essentially a rerun of past events blending with their now familiarity. The memories of the cabin and lake when Jake had been pinning for Kurt merge beautifully with the present, when their relationship is firm and their lovemaking has lost that urgency but turned into a slow burning passion. I loved their love-games and their routine. This couple has always been perfect and it keeps that way.

If you pay real attention, you can see how the plot will unravel from the very start, what with Jake nearly besting Kurt in the range field and the scenery description, but when it came to the highlight of the story, it still gets you in a high-speed. One moment things are simple and boring with our guys going through everyday life and the next all hell breaks loose. Just like in the previous books though it happens with a small even after another and then another and before you know it you’re thinking dear Lord can things get any worse? The answer to that is yes, but it is worth it. The author gives us a very nice action plot with a lot of blood wetting down the mountain floor and an unexpected near-death experience. I loved those scenes immensely and had it not been for Jake’s silliness once again I’d have loved it even more.

However, I suppose it made much more sense for the book to end the way it ended instead of him simply yielding. Still, didn’t make him more lovable to me, even if he did take my beloved Kurt to the ice-cream store.

As for the writing well, if you’re reading this book most probably you have read the other too and know how sufficient and easy-going this author is with her pen. If this is the first book, you’re reading you will encounter a great description of scenery, a slowly building intensity in the plot that will keep you going and wanting for more and a very lovable pair that will probably hook you and make you read all the rest of the books. As it is, Blood on the Mountain can be easily read as a standalone although it’d be best if you read the series in order. My guess is you’ll love them if you like life in the wilderness, forest rangers and quite a bit of action.

Review: Fire on the Mountain is a lovely story that follows Jake’s attempt at leaving human contact behind and hide on the mountains for the summer. Being in the closet for a long, long time, Jake intends to keep staying there after a near bad experience that cost him a couple of friendships. He figures it’ll be easy for him to hide in the heart of the mountains, but he never counted on having a partner like Kurt.

Sexy and alluring Kurt is driving Jake slowly but steadily out of his mind and with him, me too. It’s crazy how easily I fell under Kurt’s spell. The writing made it all happen in quite the special way. I found myself lost in the wonderful pictures the author painted with her words and the intensifying emotions of Jake’s longing. It was quite funny somehow seeing him going crazy with lust a bit more day after day. The fact that the entire story is narrated from Jake’s POV leaves us no indication of what Kurt must be thinking. We witness little things that might give him away, but Jake’s fear laden brain shuts them all down and the angst that is created by that took a hold on me as a reader, too. When Kurt finally lets that armor down it was the best reward for me. I loved him then even more and they both won me over as a couple. They were perfect for each other.

The power balance of the story plot and emotional plot was fantastic with one fueling the other and the blend was almost magical. In between fighting the fires, trying to survive certain death and fighting with emotions there was a healthy dose of everyday life in there that felt so damn normal. The humor wasn’t lacking either and I do have a soft spot for the underwear scene. I couldn’t stop laughing with poor Jake’s frustration.

So I loved this story, made the whole ranger/firefighter stereotype shine and while I’m not much for them I can’t not admit there was quality here that I’d love to see more. Strongly recommended if you love firefighters, rangers, mountain, and action/romance stories. Totally worth it.

P.S.

The short story included was awesome too. Beautiful description that seems to be this authors trademark and very helpful into loving Kurt even more. I could’ve kill Benji that jerk of a character that had my blood pressure high in a matter of seconds. Pff.
