Protector of the Alpha

(Shifting Needs 01)
by

Parker Williams

Adopted at an early age by a wealthy family, Jake Davis’s life appears easy. Even in college, he is blessed with good grades and an apparently clear path to a pro football career. Good thing his best friend keeps hanging around to keep his head from getting too swollen.

Zakiya Incekara has always been…odd. Being fluent in six languages and having a flair for international cooking should open the world to him, but those skills leave him isolated.

When Jake sees Zak for the first time, with water beading down his slender form, something inside him shifts, and it hungers for Zak. To have him. To claim him. And Jake knows that whatever it is, it won’t be denied.

Excerpt

Jake’s hand was rough, his skin dry. Zak loved how his fingers gripped tightly, but not so much that it hurt. Jake said nothing as they walked along the streets of the campus. There were few people around, but Zak did not care if everyone was watching them. He was confused as to his attraction to Jake, but it was something he could not deny.

The soft jazz music poured from the door of the pub when Jake pulled it open. Jake’s hand on his lower back urged him inside. Zak sniffed appreciatively at the scent of Cajun spices, no doubt from the blackened catfish special. His stomach protested, and he heard Jake snicker, but he could not seem to raise the ire he should. Jake escorted him to a booth and allowed Zak to sit back against the brushed leather.

“Two dinner specials coming up,” Jake said brightly.

Zak gazed at Jake’s hulking form as it moved away, marveling at the sinewy grace as he dodged patrons and servers. It was odd. He had never met anyone like Jake. He doubted there was anyone like Jake. He felt comfortable in his presence. Jake’s size did not intimidate him. In fact, that made him all the sexier. But his eyes were what made Zak melt into a puddle of goo. The way they twinkled in the dimmest of light. When Jake so much as glanced at him, Zak felt he was the sole thing Jake saw.

Jake turned from the bar, and Zak watched as the bright smile turn into a sneer. He dropped the tray, the catfish crashing to the floor, before he stalked to where Zak sat. Jake grabbed a man, probably about forty, by his throat and pushed him against the wall.

“You don’t so much as breathe near him,” Jake snarled.

The man looked cool as he smiled and croaked out. “You are everything I had heard you would be, and more, my lord.”

Review: Jake has had a pretty perfect life, he’s always had good grades, he makes friends easily, he is the star of the football team and his childhood best friend (Casey) is at college with him and keeps him grounded. But things start to get tricky when he smells the most intoxicating scent and he becomes obsessed by Zak. Zakiya is an awkward young man, he has been instilled with a level head and great knowledge but his social skills suck, meeting Jake throws him off balance but he is determined to keep the football player at arm’s length. Jake and Zakiya are just making progress when a man (Hakiim) approaches them claiming he has knowledge of their past, a past that they share. They are thrust into a world they had no knowledge of and a dangerous task they have to undertake, but is their relationship strong enough to survive the challenges they face.

Oh this was a wonderful story to read, I love it when a shifter story gets a new twist to bring something fresh to the genre and this story does that. Jake is a young man who has great confidence and he isn’t easily shaken, he has an odd quirk when it comes to sex but he’s learned to live with it. Zakiya has been brought up by his parents to do something great, they instilled knowledge and fairness into him, preparing him for something they never explained and it has made him very socially awkward. When Jake and Zakiya meet for the first time Jake is thrown by his attraction and Zakiya doesn’t understand the longing he feels for Jake.

We are thrown head long into a wonderful story that doesn’t just have a difficult courtship of two young men but also an incredible shifter world that is new and fresh. The world building is wonderful and very interesting as we discover the long hidden secrets in both Jake’s and Zakiya’s past, the way that the shifter world was explained was easy to follow and held some surprises as the pack dynamics were revealed. Jake and Zakiya don’t have an easy time as they fumble with their attraction, Jake might be panting over Zakiya but he won’t be dismissed or ordered about and Zakiya has to curb his reaction to push Jake away because he is scared of the attraction he feels. It ends up being a very interesting relationship because even when they acknowledge their feelings they have a shifter world to save which means their relationship has to take a backseat to the danger they face.

I really enjoyed this story and loved the fact that even though Jake and Zakiya both feel the mating pull they don’t jump straight into bed, in fact it isn’t until near the end of the book that they consummate their relationship but it is well worth the wait. We also get to meet some great supporting characters in Casey and Hakiim, Casey proves to be very important in both Jake and Zakiya’s lives and Hakiim guides them as best he can. This story is a wonderful difficult love story mixed with trials and danger, secrets and revelations, re-evaluating what is important in life and doing the right thing. I can’t wait for the next book because the ending just leaves you aching for Casey’s story *sigh* Parker Williams is soooo mean.

I recommend this if you love shifter stories that are a little bit different, strong characters, a great storyline, difficult relationships, great friendships, danger, love and just a touch of humor and a fantastic ending that will leave you wanting more.

  1. I’ve read many books with a wide range of shifters but the one that has always called my attention has been wolf. Perhaps it is the wolf in me but I find them so beautiful and strong, always faithful and protecting of their pack.
Much luck to Will on his newest release! And thanks for the fantastic giveaway.
