Pulling Leather

(Pickup Men 03)

by

L.C. Chase

The toughest ride of his life is all in his head.

Bull rider Scott Gillard has a reputation for quick fists and harsh words. What no one knows is where that anger comes from. After a shocking incident sends him into a tailspin, he knows he needs help: he’s been fighting a battle he could never win. Now he’s trying to navigate a new life and embrace his true self, but some days are easier than others.

Pickup man Cory Ackerson has suffered his share of harassment, but his light still burns bright. He doesn’t let anything or anyone keep him down, so when he meets the rugged cowboy with a battered chip on his shoulder and regret in his dark eyes, all he wants to do is help.

As their unlikely friendship grows into something deeper, Scott must overcome his past to be the man Cory deserves, or lose his best chance at his own happily ever after.

Review: This is book three of the pickup man series. It does work ok as a standalone, but you get to know more of the characters mentioned if you read the first two books.

Pulling Leather is about Scott. He is coming to terms with his hidden secret’s and has been off the circuit the last two years after the episode with Tripp (I can’t explain since that would be a spoiler for book two). Tripp and Scott have made up and are trying to be friends. Tripp is helping Scott to accept himself and has offered him to come help him teach on the Rainbow Rodeo circuit. Reluctantly Scott agrees. He has to face a lot of demons and really come to terms with his true self but his darkest secret holds him back. Then he meets Cory. Of all the sexy cowboys on the gay circuit the one that pushes all his buttons would be the most flamboyant, outspoken and out and proud over the top, gay Cory. Even going out with Cory as a friend and hanging out would be coming out by association and draw attention to him. More attention isn’t what Scott wants.

I truly loved this book. In the past books, I really disliked Scott and in this book, we get a chance to see Scott’s real self. I also loved that the one he fell for would be the sweet, cute flaming Cory. I like that not all the cowboys are macho he-man types, we meet some with a very softer side, and that they are not just pictured as a weakling. Cory is one tough, flaming cookie LOL!

I loved the inner conflict of this storyline, how it shows that even a bully has feelings and sometimes can be converted and show his real self. I love how throughout the story we get both Cory and Scott’s inner thought. I also loved the female best friend, since I feel too many stories every single character in the world or at least that fictional setting is gay. I like that there are women also. I truly loved Brandi. There isn’t a lot of sex and what we do get is sweet, sexy, and sensual and I felt hot, but I like the sensual loving stuff.

If you like, angst, coming out, first time, homophobia / transphobia, ranchers, rodeos, cowboys, and one heck of a good male /male romance, I recommend this story and series.
