The Riddles of Mulberry Island

by

Huston Piner

While out fishing one bright summer day, fifteen-year-old Tommy Oakley is startled to spy what appears to be a giant fish surfacing in the inlet near Mulberry Island. Confused and a little fearful, he returns to Bayside, the tiny village where he lives, and recruits Wendy to help him solve the mystery.

A few nights later, Tommy goes camping with his best friend John, and they’re alarmed to see ghostly lights floating above the water and movement inside the island’s abandoned mansion.

Everyone in Bayside knows the island is uninhibited, but they also think it’s haunted, so Tommy and John are more than ready to stay away. But the strong-willed Wendy convinces the reluctant boys to investigate the source of the lights, thereby setting in motion a harrowing adventure that has them dodging bullets and running for their lives, all the while struggling to sort out their conflicted feelings for one another.

One thing is certain—if they survive the summer at all, things will never be the same between them again.

Warning: child endangerment, adults threatening children, kidnapping of a child, and the verbal and physical domestic abuse of a child

Review: D.J. Brumb is a new author for me and the title was what caught my attention. I then read the blurb and was intrigue enough to read it. Although, I am not really much for historical romance stories. They come off a bit strange to me. The problem with this story for me was pretty much the same. It has great potential but was missing certain aspects for me to make it a great story. It starts off in the present day but then goes back to when the guys meet. For me that was just off. Although I do love to find out how a couple meets the author made this just a bit hard to get into.

When Mike and Paul meet it doesn’t really get into certain details that would make it jump out at you. It was in fact a bit stiff and boring. I mean people do meet when they jog, but to drop from the meeting to falling in love should have a bit more steps to it. Then there is the fact that Mike gets lost in Australia but he comes off like he has never seen different races. It does not sound right to me, even in the fifties one has been around many different races. The description was pretty good though.

I do not like a book that has cheating in it, and here Paul was having sex with different people was not a hit for me. Then there is the fact that there is no mention of lube, which just sounds painful. Overall this book comes off as the author is new to not only writing but sex between men. Also the fact that Mike is lacking certain knowledge is a bit frustrating. I mean he sounds like a stupid hick when in fact he is not.

The whole story bothered me more than I can even mention. It had great potential but the author just missed way too many fine points to even enjoy it to a certain degree. I just couldn’t get into the whole entire story in one sitting. It didn’t keep my attention like a story should and that was a disappointment to me. I am sorry to say that this book was not for me, although some might like it.

Some kids’ heads are in the clouds. Harriet Little’s head is in outer space.

In 1950s America, everyone is expected to come out of a cookie-cutter mold. But Harriet prefers the people who don’t, like her communist-sympathizer father and her best friend Jackie, a tomboy who bucks the school dress code of skirts and blouses in favor of T-shirts and blue jeans. Harriet realizes she’s also different when she starts to swoon over Rosemary Clooney instead of Rock Hudson—and finds Sputnik and sci-fi more fascinating than sock hops.

Before long, Harriet is secretly dating the most popular girl in the school. But she soon learns that real love needs a stronger foundation than frilly dresses and feminine wiles.
