Finding Home

by

Garrett Leigh

How do you find a home when your heart is in ashes?

With their mum dead and their father on remand for her murder, Leo Hendry and his little sister, Lila, have nothing in the world but each other. Broken and burned, they’re thrust into the foster care system. Leo shields Lila from the fake families and forced affection, until the Poulton household is the only place left to go.

Charlie de Sousa is used to other kids passing through the Poulton home, but there’s never been anyone like his new foster brother. Leo’s physical injuries are plain to see, but it’s the pain in his eyes that draws Charlie in the most.

Day by day, they grow closer, but the darkness inside Leo consumes him. He rejects his foster parents, and when Charlie gets into trouble, Leo’s attempt to protect him turns violent. When Leo loses control, no one can reach him—except Charlie. He desperately needs a family—a home—and only Charlie can show him the way.

Blurb: Violinist Logan has spent most of his life training for a career in music. But as the pressure mounts during his junior year, he questions whether playing in an orchestra is the future he wants, or one chosen by his parents. His new roommate—that annoying jerk Peter from last year’s production of Guys and Dolls—complicates matters. Crammed into a dorm room with the overconfident but undeniably hot accounting major, Logan can’t stop snarling.

Then Peter sprains his ankle building sets, and Logan grudgingly agrees to play chauffeur. But instead of putting further strain on their relationship, spending time together reveals some common ground—and mutual frustration. Logan discovers he isn’t the only one who doesn’t know what he wants from life, and the animosity between him and Peter changes keys. But just as the possibility of a happier future appears, Logan gets a dream offer that will take him away from Western Massachusetts University—and Peter. Now he has to decide: will he live the solitary life laid out for him, or hold on to Peter and forge his own path?

Review: I really hate to say, but reading the second in Kate McMurray’s WMU series has left me with much the same feeling as the first book. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the story. Like her other stories I’ve read, the characters are well developed, same with the plot, with a number of likable characters and generally well written. However, the story just didn’t connect with at the same level as some of her other books have.

What’s the Use of Wondering? is a wonderfully sweet new adult book set in Kate McMurray’s world of Western Massachusetts University (we even get a few glimpses of book 1’s Dave and Noel).

The story is about Logan and Peter. Logan is a violinist whose family has already mapped out his life and career as an orchestral violinist and Logan knows that to please them he has no room for error. However, as the stress of university builds he begins to question what he really wants for his future and if he really has to be dictated by his parents for the rest of his life. To make things more complicated, a new roommate enters his life, Peter. Peter, as the blurb said, is a jerk. Logan just does not like the guy and that’s probably more to do with Logan’s desires and questions whether or not he can be true to himself while being the good son. Peter is majoring in accounting, but he’s also involved in WMU drama production of Guys and Dolls. But when Peter sprains his ankle, Logan becomes his chauffeur and Logan is not only faced with the questions that have been plaguing him, he is now also finding out that love could give his life a more satisfaction than he realized!

Honestly, this is a sweet and enjoyable coming of age. Logan can be a bit angsty but he has a lot going on. Logan and Peter are well suited and I really did enjoy that they took their time to come together and discover each other.

Can a cool reputation really deliver on promises of happiness?

Nick’s got problems. He’s a social outcast who dreams of being popular, he’s an easy target for bullies, and he doesn’t understand why he’s just not attracted to girls. So, after a series of misunderstandings label him a troublemaker on his first day of high school, he’s really stoked to have Jesse Gaston and his gang take him in.

Jesse starts a PR campaign around campus to give Nick a new image, and the shy loser soon finds himself transformed into an antiestablishment hero. While Nick would rather explore his growing attraction to Bobby Warren, he’s forced to fend off would-be girlfriends and struggles with the demands of acting cool. And things at home are spinning out of control as the Vietnam War’s destructive impact threatens to change his life forever.

Nick’s story is both humorous and haunting–a journey of ridiculous misadventures, unexpected psychedelic explorations, and tragic turns of fate. Can a world still reeling from the sexual revolution and the illicit pleasures of marijuana and underage drinking accept two boys in love? Can Nick and Bobby’s relationship survive a hostile time when acid rock rules, status is everything, and being gay is the last taboo?

Blurb: Faery royalty have always married for duty rather than love. Prince Chrysanths should be no different – except with a human for a father, the prince known as Puck already is different. When he is betrothed against his will to Prince Sky, Puck flees to his father in the human world, only to have Sky follow.

Prince Sky Song of the Clouds isn’t thrilled with the prospect of marriage either, but is bound by duty to follow through – if he can’t win Puck over, the faery realm might very well dissolve into utter chaos. Too busy arguing, Puck and Sky are unaware there are others with a vested interest in seeing the betrothal fail. In a bid for Puck’s crown, they’ll seek to keep them apart, even as Puck and Sky realize that duty and love don’t always have to be mutually exclusive.

Review: Sweet and fun fantasy, with twu luv, and plenty of interesting twists. Combining the land of the Fae: magical and mystical with contracts, bindings, and rules that don’t apply to the real world, with a contemporary life beyond the Faery mounds. I really thought this was going to be too slow and too sweet for me, it is very YA in that sense, so is a great recommendation for any and all YA readers. But Betrothed has some complex plots and twists that add to the story, adding in some mystery and deceit. Though I really wanted Sky to go all Alpha Fae and just dominate and take what was his, but alas, I’ve been reading too much BDSM and shifter stuff lately. These two Faeries, bound by contract might be bound to repel each other instead, but will magnetism draw them together in the end?

Sky and Puck brought me a different kind of love, one slow to learn, but true to appreciate, and at the climax of the story I found myself shouting for them out loud, cheering for my guys! Even though I knew it must all work out, I was truly worried for a few moments there!

The sexual content is slow building, mild but real, and of course at the end it was climactic.

The narration was very well done, different accents for different characters, smoothly read, and brought me right into the Fae world. I loved this sweet Faery Tale, and recommend for the magic and sweet romance loving crowd.

Review: I usually love reading Kate McMurray’s stories. Her characters are well developed, same with the plot, with a number of likable characters and generally well written. This can all be said about There Has to Be a Reason.

This book is a coming of age story where two students at Western Massachusetts University – Dave and Noel. Noel is out and proud and the type of student that doesn’t choose to particularly stand out from the crowd. Dave, the character narrating the story, thought that he was a straight guy, although he never felt any real attraction to girls. In fact, most of his behavior where girls are concerned appear to be because it is what he thinks his friends and society expect him to do. Then in an English Lit class he reads a book that changes his life. It makes him wonder about the strange feelings he had tried to brush to the side when he met fellow student, Noel.

This is a wonderfully sweet coming of age story, with a set of good characters and a lot of well meaning friends who are totally realistic for their ages. The only issue have is the angst. I am not a fan of angst, even in young adult stories. So if you’re like me, I don’t recommend straight out staying away from the story, but instead I recommend going in with an open mind because the characters and the plot are what make this story beautiful.
