Blurb: Foxes are vermin.

Australian sheep farmers regard them as an enemy to be shot on sight and hung from the branches of an old gum tree.

But not all foxes are just foxes.

Connor Coutts could be the last surviving male Furborn in Victoria, maybe in the whole country, a heavy bur-den for a teenager. His life’s path is clear— protect what’s left of the Furborn line. That is until someone new arrives at the MacKenzie sheep farm. Spencer MacKenzie, with his long black hair and gothic style, is a strange sight in Connor’s forest, but Fate throws the two teenagers together to save their families.

Can Connor trust Spencer to keep his life-or-death secret, or will he hang on the tree?

Review: Furborn is a standalone young adult novel by Isabelle Rowen. This isn’t your usual paranormal, shape shifting human novel. There is something rather laid back about it, which makes it feel so obviously Australian (at least to me) and as a reader we aren’t being led to some massive apocolytic event and true mates. Instead this is a story about two teenage boys living out in the country on a farm. The setting made me think of classic Australian writer Colin Thiele, who I grow up reading books such as Storm Boy (Mr Percival the Pelican on the Coorong!) and Sun on Stubble (thought about this one as it was based around farm life, hence the title).

Foxes have always been the bane of farmer’s in Australia ever since they were introduced on the large island nation by early settlers. But, not all foxes are just foxes. Some foxes also have human skin. With an explanation of shape shifters that compares them to the myth of Selkies from Scotland, the scariest part of this story is the Furborn having to go against the hunters who need to get rid of the foxes that decimate chickens and the like, as well as damaging crops and fences. After all, many farmers believe that the only good fox is a dead fox.

Connor Coutts comes from an ancient line of furborns who turn into foxes. He’s a teenager on the cusp of being a man. There aren’t many left, and his grandmother – the matriarch of all that is left of his family – will do whatever it takes to ensure the family’s survival, now and into the future. Connor’s life turns upside down when Spencer Mackenzie arrives at the Mackenzie Sheep Farm. The Coutts are almost like a local legend and so Spencer’s grandfather finds Spencer and Connor hanging out together rather amusing.

Connor’s friendship with Spencer comes with a lot of changes. The two young men start to explore some more romantic feelings, while Connor knows he has to do all he must to protect his secret and his family. As their lives intertwine Connor begins to realise that perhaps there is another path for him in life. Being a teenager is difficult, but being a teenage furborn is stressful with so much secrecy and expectation.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect but I loved it, I could not put this down. The writing was so emotive without overloading the reader with more angst than necessary. There is so much sweetness and naivety that makes this a beautiful coming of age story. It just so happens that one boy is human and the other boy can turn into a fox.

For anyone that is looking for some YA fiction which doesn’t lead to a heap of post-apocolytic drama but still want your shape shifters, then this is a good book for you. The setting, out in regional Australia on farms, felt so wonderful and was really realistic. I think that was my favourite part of the book.

Review: I liked this sequel to Harry and Sam’s previous story. There are twists and turns as Sam struggles with his growing abilities and keeping them a secret from Harry. But there is someone who is bound and determined to get Sam to use said powers for their own gain.

The story see’s things on a deeper level as the group tries to navigate their way through a throng of people with bad intentions. Sam for his part struggles with his secret plus the dreams he’s been having. There are great characters throughout that bring this story to life with amazing details that capture your attention and keep it riveted until the end.

I enjoyed the first book in this series as well as this book. An amazing addition to the series that held me spell bound from to start to finish.

Great read.

Review: While I’m not an f/f reader I did enjoy this story. It picks up where the first book leaves off. The mc Keira comes into her powers at worst possible time and has her on the run. I liked the adventure and the coming of age aspect that shows Keira’s journey.

There are a lot of twists and turns and all the characters from the first book make appearances throughout. I have to admit to skipping any f/f parts in the story. Keira is tough yet soft when she needed to be.

With so many characters throughout it added an extra element of suspense to the story that intrigued me. But again I would have enjoyed it much more had it been an m/m story.

Good read.

Review: Interesting story about James who comes into extraordinary powers and struggles to understand what is happening to him. Then he’s sent off to a gifted school to help him in his quest for control where he meets other students like himself.

Meanwhile the boy he has feelings for, his best friend Paul, disappears.

I loved the mystery and the suspense surrounding James as he seeks for the truth. There are many twists and turns as the story progresses. A lot happens that gives the book an X-Men feel to it which I loved.

The answers are sometimes not what James was expecting when they are discovered. This was a complex story with many characters that added depth to the story. Not everything was self explanatory but that added to the story.

Great read.

Review: Boy Shattered by Eli Easton is nothing short of amazing. To be honest from reading the blurb I didn’t know what to expect, but Easton is one of my favorite authors and I was therefore more than willing to give it a go.

When I started this young adult tale of a teenager who survives a mass shooting at his high school, I thought to read only half of it and finish the rest the next night. Instead, I stayed up all night and cried from start to finish, Seriously, get those tissues ready, it’s impossible not to feel the depths or horror and despair and hope in this book.

The story is written from the POV of two teenage boys, one is a high school senior and the other is a couple years off of finishing. Landon, the senior, is out and proud to the rest of the school and not at all popular. Meanwhile Brian is a jock. He’s the quarterback on the football team, he’s friends with other jocks and to hide his sexuality he has even dated cheerleaders. Two of his friends seem to show some homophobic tendencies, while his best friend is more down to earth. Landon and Brian have both noticed each other but due to the social circles they occupy, nothing ever happens between them, or even any sort of acknowledgement of each other’s existence.

Everything changes for the boys when two gunmen open fire at the school, changing their worlds forever. Caught in the hallway, Landon does his best to find his brother and finds Brian bleeding out in the cafeteria. Brian hadn’t meant to be in the cafeteria, but when the bullets started he tried his best to hide and take cover. Brian wasn’t so lucky and as he bleeds out, Landon did his best to put pressure on the wound and keep Brian conscious.

Landon saved Brian’s life that day, but Brian has a long road to recovery. He and Landon grow close, although it is easy to see that what may have started as a dependency caused by Brian’s PTSD has turned into something more meaningful. Brian’s brush with death leaves him with a lot of fears but it also makes him want to step out of the shadows and be who he is, albeit very slowly. Landon also changes, he was already a smart and sensible guy, but he takes his passion for wanting to help others, especially since he sees the varying effects of a shooting first hand at himself and everyone at school. Landon has a great head and mind. He is one of the most inspiring characters I’ve come across, not only in young adult fiction, but any fiction.

This is a wonderful young adult novel, yet I think that it would be valuable and enjoyable for many adults as well. It is so easy to relate to the kid’s thoughts and feelings because despite the horrible circumstances it is easy to place yourself back in the mind of being a teenager once more.

The subject matter is confronting. The romance in the book is merely incidental to the actual guts of the book. However, it was the perfect mix of emotion. As many Australians, it’s difficult to understand the lack of urgency for gun reform in the US and this book highlights it all the more.

And that is the only personal view on a current affair I will put into the book review, understand that reading the book is very thought provoking and had me thinking about this. It also had me thinking, how many kids fear going to school because they know people from their school, or from other schools, who have been touched by this horror.

Review: Theo is back in this heart stopping addition where Blackbird strikes again. Only this time they mean business. The cost is high as the plans are put into motion. Theo is cut off from everyone else as all communication has been hijacked.

Demands are made and Theo realizes he has no choice after he saves Mitch but to help Blackbird. It’s a complicated but brilliant plan that Blackbird has, but Theo tries to thwart the plan the only way he knows how.

Blurb: This isn’t his sister’s Wonderland….

Henry never believed his older sister Alice’s fantastic tales about the world down the rabbit hole. When he’s whisked away to the bizarre land, his best chance for escape is to ally himself with the person called the Mad Hatter. Hatter – an odd but strangely attractive fellow – just wants to avoid execution. If that means delivering “Boy Alice” to the Queen of Hearts at her Red Castle, Hatter will do what he has to do to stay alive. It doesn’t matter if Henry and Hatter find each oth-er intolerable. They’re stuck with each other.

Along their journey, Henry and Hatter must confront what they’ve always accepted as truth. As dislike grows into tolerance and something like friendship, the young men see the chance for a closer relationship. But Wonderland is a dangerous place, and first they have to get away with their lives.

Review: Mad About the Hatter is an audio for a book that I remember reading a couple years ago. I remember that I loved reading the book and was totally keen on listening to the audio.

Dakota Chase isn’t really an author on my radar and I think this was the first time I had read the author’s work initially a couple years ago. But the writing is fun and even though it is a fantasy based on a classic book, the story doesn’t feel completely ridiculous. The narration was also awesome. I don’t actually remember the narrator’s name, although when I heard him talking I know I’ve heard his narration at least once before and like this time, I am sure it was a pleasing audio experience. I particularly loved the voices that Froomkin gave these classic characters that we know so well, especially Hatter, the Tweedles and the Chesire Cat.

Mad About the Hatter is a story that is about a sweet, quiet romance with a dash of friendship and adventure, all set in the world of Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland. It’s an interesting spin on the classic, where the events of the book take place after Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The story itself is more of an young adult read than anything else because this story is essentially eighteen year old Henry coming to terms with his own identity – having a coming of age adventure and falling in love.

Anyone who likes urban fantasies and new takes on classic tales would enjoy this story, although if you’re dead set against young adult fiction, then this probably isn’t what you’re looking for.

The story starts with Henry. He and his sister, Alice, do not have an easy relationship, despite the fact that their only other family is their possibly alcoholic father and mysterious/random Uncle Leonard. The main problem is that Alice likes to talk about her time in Wonderland which Henry knows that logically could not have happened at all. I was siding with Henry there although Henry is a bit of brat at the start of this book. Then his sister gave him punch and Henry’s world changes to the surreal.

We meet up with the Mad Hatter. The Red Queen is getting more insane by the day and is having people beheaded left, right and centre. When Hatter is sent after “Boy Alice”, we have the quirky adventure throughout Wonderland not unlike the original. We also meet other familiar characters, aside from the Red Queen, including Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Cheshire Cat as well as that opium fiend Caterpillar.

There is not a lot of romance, there is very little in the way of sex but there are some rather sweet moments between Hatter and Henry. I particularly liked the end but it left me thinking “but I want more!!!!” but in a totally good way.

Review: I always enjoy reading about characters with unique abilities. It intrigues me as to how they cope with them and use them. Harry has the ability to fly. He uses it for the first time to save Sam when they were younger. Now they are together and on the run from someone.

I loved these two together. There is romance but the sex is off page which was fine with me. Jonah is a questionable character when Harry and Sam meet him. He wants to train Harry without Sam around. There are others with Jonah who are also being trained how to use their abilities.

A good mix of characters with abilities and some that are either shady or mean what they say. I loved reading this story. I hope there will be another book to further the story a long.

Fantastic read.

Review: This was an amazing story with a twist I never saw coming.

Theo and his parents set out for New York to help a friend of his dad’s who is a talented songwriter among other things. Attempted kidnappings and unusual music manipulations lead Theo into a discovery that changes everything for him.

My heart went out to Theo as the story ended. I so loved the mystery, the investigation and the details in how the team discovers what is going on as well as how they stop the culprits from advancing any further. Great action scenes had me on the edge of my seat.

I love this series as we see how Theo interacts with others as well as how he adjusts when the call goes out for a mission. I do not want to give away anything about the book further than I already have.

Review: Tasis starts having dreams that seem very real to him after his mother passes. With his sister Zaree the two set off to find an island that neither has heard of until now. The Dragon’s Claw is where The Mage’ Guild once was until a power ma king tried to take the magic by force. The results were catastrophic.

The adventure was well written with Tasis and Zaree facing danger and meeting new allies along the way. Kelwin accompanies the two when he finds out where they are headed. Zelwin and Tasis made a cute couple but there was no real romance in the story. Tasis finds out who he is actually related to and what his role is in the grand scheme of things.

I loved how the story progressed. The adventure was awesome with it’s twists and turns and eye opening dreams. A wonderful read with plenty of details surrounding the dragon’s claw and explanations regarding the past and what happened.

Awesome story.

In a matter of weeks, the Sisterhold becomes agitated with worries and war plans. People he trusts—like the wizard Thurlock—frequently can’t be found. His mother seems angry, especially with Lucky. Even Han Shieth, the warrior uncle he has come to rely on and love above all others, maintains a sullen silence toward him.

When Lucky’s resentment builds to the breaking point, his bad decisions put him and his friends, L’Aria and Zhevi, in unthinkable danger. Han arrives to help, but he can’t claim invulnerability to the hazards and evils that threaten at every turn. Review: This story picks up where book one leaves off. Lucky is struggling with his new life. He feels he’s the reason for everything going wrong. Everyone else seems to have a place except Lucky. I found Lucky to be a bit self depreciating but that was to be expected given his new circumstances.

War breaks out and his Uncle is sent to where the troops are, leaving Lucky and his bodyguard and love interest, Zhevi behind. Zhevi wants to protect Lucky from all that is dangerous so the two set off on a dangerous mission when L’Aria is kidnapped. This adventure leads to finding out knowledge Lucky needs to come into his own and mature into the man he was destined to become one day.

I loved this story. Lucky was bit melodramatic but I understood why. Being thrown into a new world must have been stressing to say the least. The characters all had a roe to play in creating a wonderful story as the adventure unfolded. I loved everything about it.

Fantastic read.

Do nice guys always have to finish last?

For Dylan Porter, it’s starting to look that way. His plan is to finish high school, get a football scholarship, and come out to his family and friends when he has the cushion of being away at college. But none of that is going to happen if his failing grades get him kicked off the team.

His saving grace comes in the form of Tommy Peterson, the smartest kid in school, who also happens to be the Triple S that Dylan crushes on: smart, short, sexy. Review: In this installment Grant and Ash are transported to a time where you have to hunt your own food, be on the lookout for danger at every while struggling to stay alive. I loved this story. The environment was unforgiving and a moments weakness could get you killed. Not to mention the guys trying to get two warring tribes to come together piece of cake right?

These had a time trying to bridge the language barrier of the era not to mention hunting for their own food. I was impressed with how resourceful they were at times given they did not grow up in that environment. Helping Rabbit get back to his clan when he was injured was no easy feat but they managed.

I really enjoy the differences of the places these young men travel to and how they adapt to each environment presented to them in order to obtain the artifact of that specific location. Truly an adventurous series that keeps readers awed by how well written and engaging the books are.

Great read and addition to the series.

Review: I love science fiction. This story however was confusing at times. There was evil scientists and the explanation of the duplicate process which is where I was lost. Maddy lost his boyfriend Jesse to suicide only to see him again and get blown away. The concept of duplicating someone without their previous consent irked me as I thought that was wrong.

I quite liked the action scenes, them being on the run and trying to stay ahead of those after them while at the same time reconnecting when the scene called for it. Still it was a lot of information to take in at once and I felt myself bogged down with the overload.

I still enjoyed the story as it played it out. Maddy and Jesse were great together and their friends were a constant encouragement and support for the two.

Good read.

Review: High school genius and hockey player Theo is back in this exciting sequel to uncover who is behind the theft to a file that can let the person control the nations energy grid. While in the process of tracking down the file he is enlisted to help the computer science class with their competition.

At the competition he realizes one key factor. The file has been submitted in the competition. It is up to Theo and his team to try and keep everyone safe when things go wrong.

Exciting and addictive this story has an interesting buzz feeling to it. I liked that Teo put himself in danger to help as much as he could. I felt bad that he had to go through certain things at his age.

Wonderfully and spy filled this story had me on the edge of my seat as the story drew to a conclusion. Some questions remained unanswered though and left me feeling like the story was not finished. Other than that I loved it.

Fantastic read.
