Wolf At The Door

(Winter Wolf 03)
by

T.A. Moore

Home.

For Jack and Gregor, the exiled Wolf Princes of the Scottish pack, it’s someplace they never wanted to leave. For Danny, who fled as soon as he could, it’s someplace he never planned to return. As for Nick, pathologist and carrion bird, he has nowhere else to be.

It offers only one thing—the Old Man’s help in putting down the bloody-handed treachery from the prophets who dogged them all the way from Durham. The twins’ father is many things, not all of them kind, but not even the prophets would cross him.

But when they finally arrive home, they find the Old Man gone and the prophets’ puppet installed in his place. Outnumbered, bereaved, and haunted by old mistakes, the four of them must discover the prophet Rose’s plan before it’s too late. As the stakes rise and the cold settles into their bones, they find that the old fairy tales hide horrors under their pretty words.

In the Highlands, Fenrir has stirred, and he’s hungry.

The prophets have always said that a Wolf Winter is red as blood—but they never said whose.

Footsteps echoed in the night, signaling the approach of our prey. Martin clung to the alley wall, machete in hand, blue eyes wide behind his glasses. I could see a sheen of sweat on his cheek, and I placed a finger to my lips, reminding him to be silent. He nodded, and I headed to the mouth of the alley. I had a performance to put on. I ruffled my hair, loosened my tie, and did my best to appear inebriated.

Just to add a little extra to the act, I began singing in a slurred voice. I could practically hear the monster’s delight as I walked down the alley. Sometimes I wished I knew what the fuck they were thinking. Nothing but blood and murder.

“Are you lost, little boy?” a voice asked in a sickly sweet tone.

I turned. A white woman stood there with long legs and brown hair. She wore a purple pantsuit like she’d finished a late night at an office nearby. There was something wrong with her eyes, just like the rest of them. No depth; her eyes were empty and still. I palmed the stake up my sleeve, making sure she couldn’t see it.

“’M not little,” I replied, wagging my finger at her. “I’m big where it counts.”

“Of course you are,” she said, grinning at me. God, she couldn’t be this stupid. Then again what did I know? It’s not like I knew of any Mensa vampires.

Martin was in position, but I didn’t dare look at him for fear of tipping her off. No need to take any risks on a hunt. I staggered up to her, playing up the drunk angle. I could practically hear Martin rolling his eyes. “I am. I can show you. Come back to my place, and I’ll prove it.”

“Why would I want to do that?” she asked. Her fangs were sliding down as she grinned; she was ready to pounce. “You can show me right here.”

I smiled back, standing up straight. “Okay.” I shouted, “Now!” And threw myself at her. I grabbed her around the middle and tackled her to the ground. She howled, teeth snapping at my neck. I dodged the fangs and rammed the iron stake into her heart.

She screamed, face contorted in demonic rage. Her fingers had turned into claws, and she was scratching the hell out of my back. I looked up to see Martin standing over us, and he said, “Move.” I tore myself away from the creature, and she let out an unearthly howl before Martin cut off her head.

The body went limp, and I got to my feet and said, “Nice work.”

“You too,” Martin replied. His eyes were still wide, and a tremor went through him. He looked like a kid who was in way over his head. I knew better.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

“Fine,” he said, his voice squeaking. I raised an eyebrow, and he sighed. “Sorry. I’ve got a bad feeling is all.”

I snorted. “When don’t you have a bad feeling?” I went to where I’d hidden my bag at the alley’s mouth and took out the lighter fluid. I drenched the corpse in it, making sure to use the entire can.

“I’m serious, Kingston. Something’s coming.”

“Well, when it gets here, we’ll deal with it. Just like this one.” I grabbed the book of matches and uttered a quick prayer. Didn’t make a difference; we’d already done our work. The ritual was more for my comfort. Martin hated it but he didn’t begrudge me. I struck the match and tossed it. The body burned hot, bright, and fast, and was gone in seconds.

Martin handed me the machete after he’d cleaned it off with the edge of his shirt. I tossed the blade in the bag along with the can and the matches. I retrieved the stake and slipped it in my pocket. I slung the bag on my back and headed out of the alley with Martin at my side. I threw an arm around him and said, “You worry too much.”

“You should take a break. When’s the last time you went out?” When I gestured to our surroundings, he pursed his lips with annoyance. “I mean besides hunting.”

“I went to the movies Saturday,” I said.

“You tracked a vampire to the movies and killed him after. That doesn’t count as going out,” Martin said, and I sighed. We walked to the parking garage where we’d stashed the car. I was glad to see there was no attendant around, given the sight of us. The fluorescent lights of the garage rendered my brown skin a sickly shade. If I looked sick, Martin appeared unearthly.

He was so white he glowed under the harsh lights. He had strawberry-blond hair and pale-blue eyes like a husky. I loved the way his hair gleamed in the light, and I wanted to run my hands through it. I jammed my hands into my pockets instead, one curling around the stake. Something solid to hang on to. We found the car, and I pulled out the key fob to unlock it.

“Okay, yes, I’ve been hunting a lot. But there’s more of these fuckers popping up by the minute,” I reminded him.

Martin bit his lower lip as I tossed the bag in the trunk, fiddling with one of the beads on his fidget bracelet. It struck me we made an odd pair. He’d opted for jeans, an Ozzy shirt, black thick-framed glasses, and Converse sneakers. I was in one of my old navy suits and brown loafers. Blood soaked our clothes, which was why I was eager to get going before someone spotted us. We got in the car and drove off.

He had curled up in the passenger seat, staring out of the window. Martin still twirling his beads, not saying anything right away. He looked delicate, almost fragile, which was why he was usually the bait. He could lure them in with his boyish charm, and vampires would trip over themselves to get a bite.

They didn’t know he was strong, physically and mentally. Or when he set his mind to something, he would get it done. Or that he’s the smartest person I’d ever met either in my regular life or my hunting life. Not to mention the most compassionate, which was one of the reasons we’d been arguing so much as of late. I admired his tenacious streak. Not so much when he aimed that tenacity at me.

He was thinking, and I tensed for an argument. I entertained the idea of kissing him to shut him up, something I’d dreamed about but wouldn’t do. When we drove onto the 101 loop, Martin said, “We should talk to Tyrone.”

“Fuck no!” I snapped, struggling to keep my eyes on the road.

“He can help. He’s got his own crew, and we’re low on manpower.”

“He’s a fucking vampire. We can’t trust that bloodsucker.”

“Yes, we can.” Martin’s voice strained.

I chanced a look at him and saw Martin clenching his jaw. “Look, just because he switched to donor blood while you two were fucking doesn’t mean he’s trustworthy. For all we know he’s stalking school kids now.”

Martin slammed his fist against the dashboard. “He’s not like that. Not all vampires are evil.”

“Like fuck they aren’t!” I shot back. “Do we gotta go over this again? They killed your family. They killed my brother. How are they not evil?” I regretted it the minute I said it, but I wouldn’t take it back. Martin balled his hands into fists, shoulders tensing up around his ears.

He growled, “Kingston Patrick St. Louis, that is fucking low.”

“It’s the truth.”

I didn’t expect him to understand. Martin had grown up without his family. He didn’t know anything about them except for some pictures in a scrapbook. While their deaths hurt Martin, he had never known them. My brother and I were thick as thieves, and I missed Seph every day.

Dog Days by T.A. Moore ~ Audio Review

Title: Dog Days

Series: Winter Wolf 01

Author: T.A. Moore

Narrator: Derrick McClain

Genre: Paranormal, Shape shifters, Post-Apocalypse Future

Length: 7 hrs, 34 mins

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press (9th February 2018)

Heat Level: Low

Heart Rating: 💖💖💖💖 4 Hearts

Reviewer: Prime

Blurb: The world ends not with a bang, but with a downpour. Tornadoes spin through the heart of London, New York cooks in a heat wave that melts tarmac, and Russia freezes under an ever-thickening layer of permafrost. People rally at first—organizing aid drops and evacuating populations—but the weather is only getting worse.

In Durham, mild-mannered academic Danny Fennick has battened down to sit out the storm. He grew up in the Scottish Highlands, so he’s seen harsh winters before. Besides, he has an advantage. He’s a werewolf. Or, to be precise, a weredog. Less impressive, but still useful.

Except the other werewolves don’t believe this is any ordinary winter, and they’re coming down over the Wall to mark their new territory. Including Danny’s ex, Jack—the Crown Prince Pup of the Numitor’s pack—and the prince’s brother, who wants to kill him.
A wolf winter isn’t white. It’s red as blood.

Review: Dog Days is a paranormal, shape shifter book set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic future by TA Moore. Sounds like a mouthful, right?

So, I feel like I’ve had my own Mandela moment (bringing the conspiracy theories, I know probably not cool). I say this because I was absolutely convinced that I’ve read TA Moore before and even had another audio. but no, I haven’t. I see no trace of book, audio or even a review I’ve written for TA Moore. Therefore, I went into this one blind and with mixed feelings. This is because I find post-apocalyptic books hit and miss and my enjoyment very much depends on my mood, especially when it isn’t a rose-tinted end of humanity trope. The very nature of the genre also means that romance usually takes a back seat to the crazy shit happening as the world goes to hell. Fair warning, this is for people that like their dystopian futures and the characters dark, unsafe and gritty where survival instincts reign if you hope to survive the day. If you’re looking for something that is primarily romance, this probably isn’t your thing.

Moore has created an intricate world. The start is kind of like The Day After Tomorrow. When storms take over the world and so many millions die, especially the humans because the conditions are hostile and no amount of technology can prepare the populations for this scale of disaster. Danny Fennick, who lives and teaches in Durham, England, is a weredog and decides to go back to the Scottish Highlands where he had grown up as he prepares to live out the storm. However, being a dog when werewolves want to take over is just as dangerous and deadly to him as the storm that killing so many.

Jack, who happens to be Danny’s ex, is the crown prince of his pack. The biggest problem is that his own brother wants him dead and he has been banished from his pack for being gay. Jack is tough and rough, he has to be to not only survive the oncoming wolf winter, but to also survive being banished in this weather. Jack needs to be prepared to do anything to survive because that is what world requires for him.

This is a complex story where the characters come to life in this dark world, they are extremely well fleshed out making it much easier for me to understand their motivations and harshness of the world that they live in. Danny is the most relatable character, he is like the connection to humanity and he is reader’s bridge to understand Jack’s raw instinctive nature.

Derrick McClain did an awesome job of narrating this story. I love his narration and Dog Days is no exception. In the other audio I have narrated by him my collection is four contemporary romances, one light hearted shape shifter romance and this one. I hadn’t known what to expect, especially from a story that is very much in an English setting, but it was amazing. I really loved how he was able to do distinct voices for characters, especially with accents. He also managed to convey the emotions so well.

Review: This is a hard story to review as so much happens throughout. The relationship between Callum and Gideon is not what I would call romantic but it worked never the less. At times I found myself drifting as I struggled to comprehend what was going on and why. But as the story drew closer to it’s conclusion I understood better what had happened.

This is a complex and interesting book that captured my attention from the start. Gideon and Callum worked well together as secrets are revealed about one of the MC’s. I do not want to give away too much in my review though I would never be able to cover everything that happens anyway.

Action packed and mystery surround this story in a unique plot with twists and turns that are unraveled slowly as the book progresses.

Great read.

Kayleigh Sky

Vampires live.

And they hunger…

Otto Jones, a cop assigned to the seemingly random murder of a vampire, would rather hide out in the nearest bar than waste his time on a dead vamp. He hates the bloodthirsty demons. But when the king of the vampires commands him to work with one of the lesser princes and find the killer, he has no choice.

Prince Jessamine Senera is ready to sacrifice his happiness in a loveless marriage for his family’s benefit… but not yet. He dreams of adventure, excitement, and true love. He lives on romance novels and detective stories and wishes he could drink synthetic blood like every other vampire. But he can’t. He needs human blood to survive and is hated by vampires and humans alike.

As Otto and Jessa draw closer to an entity that doesn’t want to be discovered, Otto finds the heart he thought long dead opening to the romance-loving Jessa. No good can possibly come from falling in love with a vampire, but when a shadowy assailant attacks Jessa, Otto will descend into the darkest pit of the earth to rescue him.

If you like vampires, mythical and urban settings, intense suspense, and happy ever after, then you’ll love this first book in the dark and mysterious Ellowyn Found trilogy!

A Vampire’s Heart is a stand-alone paranormal dystopian noir romance with a satisfying conclusion to the love story and a central mystery that weaves the trilogy together.

Review: I love when I start reading a book and am taken by surprise with the uniqueness of it.

Tryg is a poison master. He keeps to himself and does what he’s told by his older brother. My repulsion for Tryg’s half-brother started early on and grew stronger. Tryg does not want to hurt people with his poisons and so makes antidotes for every one that is asked for. His lover, and brother’s assassin, Arris is trusted with this.

When Tryg discovers the green death, a poison that radically affects a person by driving them to rage depending on the individuals trigger, was produced and used by his family, Tryg wants to make a cure. But his brother beats him and then has him dropped into the green zone to die a horrible death, only he does not die. He meets Riot and a slew of others who are part of a resistance against the government who have been trying to survive since they were bombed a hundred years ago.

I loved everything about this story. Tryg’s knowledge of poisons was mind blowing. His attempts at making an antidote was steadfast, as was his need to survive and control the rages within him. The hierarchy of the green zone was intriguing to say the least. They had their own little world behind the wall.

Fantastic read and highly recommended.

Review: The entire series up to this point of human and Alasharian’s meeting their mates, unanswered questions lead to this exciting climax as they all go through a spiritual awareness to culminate with battle plans and strategies to beat all their foes. It will not be easy but nothing in life is.

I loved everything about this story. The danger was real, the battles intense and graphic that left me on the edge of my seat. I loved how all the characters worked together despite the doubts gathering around Chris. The twists and turns were a real eyeful and one even took me by surprise as I did not see it coming.

Needless to say this story was awesome.

Review: Let me start of by saying this is the first book in the series I have read. While I was worried I might have missed something the story itself was really good with plenty of mystery, suspense and edge of your seat scenes that are engaging. I loved the characters from Jester to Zoon. The tech in the story was very detailed and intriguing.

There is a lot happening as the story progresses and the suspense of waiting to see what happens was brilliant. I really enjoyed the overall story and was impressed with the way it was written and the attention to the details. All the characters had a role to play in bringing this story to life.

Great read.

Review: I love science fiction. This story however was confusing at times. There was evil scientists and the explanation of the duplicate process which is where I was lost. Maddy lost his boyfriend Jesse to suicide only to see him again and get blown away. The concept of duplicating someone without their previous consent irked me as I thought that was wrong.

I quite liked the action scenes, them being on the run and trying to stay ahead of those after them while at the same time reconnecting when the scene called for it. Still it was a lot of information to take in at once and I felt myself bogged down with the overload.

I still enjoyed the story as it played it out. Maddy and Jesse were great together and their friends were a constant encouragement and support for the two.

Good read.

Blurb: Before King Roland ruled over Earth, four dragon kingdoms fought over the plentiful planet: Ice Dragons, Sun Dragons, Earth Dragons, and Bone Dragons. One day a young dragon named Prince Grian slipped aboard the Sun Dragon ship and traveled to Earth, while on that same day, an Earth Dragon named Caden snuck away from his village. The two met and fell in love, but both were killed in battle.

The Artists, creators of the universe, were furious about the death of these true loves. As punishment, they erased the Sun Dragon race, banished the Bone Dragons to Draman, and put the Ice Dragons in the North Pole, where they could not harm the Earth Dragons. The Artists declared that the dragons would remain cursed until the true love between Grian and Caden was born again and they reunited all dragons in peace and harmony.

Years later Prince Grian is reborn, and it is up to him and his godparent, Skelly, to find his soulmate on Earth. But with the head of the Earth Dragon Protection Society, or EDPS, trying to kill him, reuniting with the love of his life seems impossible. Will Grian be able to find his match before the EDPS finds him? And if he finds Caden, will it be the true love of the prophecy?

Review: I did not read the previous books in this series due to some having f/f in them. With that said while I enjoyed Grian’s adventure in finding his so called soulmate, making plans to defeat Shull, an evil dragon wanting to do away with all dragons so he can rule the universe and change the artist’s creations the actual romance aspect was seriously lacking.

First we are introduced to Blair, a female bone dragon, who Grian thinks is his soulmate. They kiss. Ewww. I am an m/m reader only so I was unhappy with this development and as such I withdrew from the story.

Next is the introduction of Caden, Blair’s brother, this back and forth of love interest irritated me. I was glad it only happened once but it ruined the entire book for me as I felt the main character did not know what he actually wanted even though he says he is gay.

So overall we have a character on a journey to stop an evil dragon from destroying his people and taking over the world.

It was an o.k. read for me.

Blurb: Strength is found when surrendering to destiny.

Graham has suffered way too much at the hands of the Nall. Ever since he was enslaved after the invasion, he’s been raped and tortured by the Alasharian Supreme Commander and his cohorts. Condemned to die by hanging for his part in the human rebellion, Graham gives in to the inevitable, no longer caring if he lives or dies. But an unexpected event occurs and, at the last moment, Graham is saved.

Balor is a guard to the Nall, but he’s also a part of the growing rebellion among the Alasharians. When one of the Nall’s advisors enlists his help in getting a human prisoner to safety, Balor comes to his aid. Startled by the soul match hum that sparks to life when he touches Graham, but unable to do anything about it, Balor is determined to protect his human match at all costs. When Advisor Oman arrives on the scene to rescue Balor as he helps Graham to escape, it becomes clear that yet another alien/human triad is forming—even if Graham may never accept being bonded to two aliens after the trauma he’s endured at the hands of Alasharians.

The time has come to depart to the secret military complex where the human and Alasharian allies will stage their final assault against the Nall and the Void. Families are reunited and others torn apart as they prepare for battle. The allies fear what will become of them all if Chris, the special human Sha Sha Ar has chosen as their spiritual leader, is no longer there to guide them.

Reader advisory: This book contains scenes of battle violence, and mentions of rape and torture.

Review: I have really enjoyed this series so far. In this one Oman and Balor get together and begin looking for their third. Graham has been raped and abused by the Nall species so imagine my surprise when his mates save him and seems like the past abuse did not occur as far sex goes.

Although I liked the characters that one aspect threw the whole story off for me. I felt as though what Graham went through was irrelevant to what Oman and Balar wanted but maybe it was just me. Aside from that it was an intriguing story with suspense and mystery.

It was a good read.

(The Sun Dragon 04)
by

Annabelle Jay

Long ago, in the days before King Roland, the four dragon kingdoms—Ice, Sun, Earth, and Bone—battled for dominion over the bountiful planet Earth. Prince Grian, a young dragon, hid aboard a Sun Dragon ship, traveled to Earth, and met Caden, an Earth Dragon who’d run away from his village. Despite falling in love, destiny’s plans for them turned cruel, and both perished in the war.

The Artists who created the universe could not let this tragic loss of true love go unpunished. They wiped out the race of Sun Dragons, exiled the Bone Dragons to Draman, and banished the Ice Dragons to the North Pole, safely away from the Earth Dragons. Only the rebirth of Grian and Caden could break the curse. One day, the return of their love would usher in an age of peace and prosperity for all dragons.

But when Prince Grian is reborn, he finds reuniting with his soulmate on Earth will be no easy feat. As he searches for his lost love, the Earth Dragon Protection Society, or EDPS, searches for him, ready to kill him when they find him. If Grian can elude the EDPS, he might find that the true love he once had isn’t guaranteed to bloom a second time.

Dog Days by T.A. Moore

Series: N/A

Author: T.A. Moore

Genre: Erotic Romance, Paranormal, Dystopian

Length: Novel (200 Pages)

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press (September 9, 2016)

Heat Level: Low

Heart Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥ 3, & 4 ½ Hearts

Lisa’s Review: ♥♥♥ 3 Hearts

This is the first book by this author that I have read and I hate to say it probably the last. The blurb made the book sound a bit more interesting but the story itself was just creepy as hell. The tone was dark and twisted with characters that I wouldn’t save if the world was going to hell except for Danny.

Danny had left his home so many years ago and now taught students for a living. He had a nice life even though he was a dog shifter. That was until the storms starting hitting the world and the cold took the lives of those not prepared. He had been born into a wolf pack and had only his mother left there, a mother not worth calling even on a good day. They say that the weather is a prediction of what is to come.

Jack was the crown prince of his pack, but had also been kicked out for being gay by his father. Times were changing and not for the good. He was going to make a new home for himself, but had not expected to find someone he had spent time with living over the wall. To top it off there is murder going around and they needed to find out who was behind it.

I couldn’t get into this book very well. I basically skimmed over parts and it felt like I had not missed a damn thing. This book was not what I had expected and left me more disappointed than anything. I can say that I did not care for Jack and could not connect with any of the characters, although I did like Danny. I am afraid that if this authors other stories are similar to this one then I will probably skip those also. I just could not get interested in this story.

Pixie’s Review: ♥♥♥♥♥ 4 ½ Hearts

I have to admit that I do disagree with Lisa on this one, I loved it. The dystopian setting as the Earth rebels against humanity is a stunning setting; it adds a more desperate feel to the situation as the town becomes isolated and something is stalking in the shadows.

Jack is a tough bastard, he has no intention of his banishment killing him and as he travels towards England he catches a whiff of a scent he knows well. Danny has a good life among the humans and when the storm hits he has no intention of leaving his new home, and then Jack finds him.

This isn’t a sweet fluffy shifter story, it’s a rough world the shifters live in and it’s a bit complex. As the wolf winter comes to fruition and the shifters plan to bathe in blood something else is lurking in the background, something so dark and twisted that neither humans nor shifters are safe.

I loved this story for the beautiful way that it was executed, it’s darkish and bloody and although Danny and Jack are what I’d loosely call a romantic pair there really isn’t any romance or really a relationship, it just is.

So I’d recommend this to those who love darker paranormal stories, who love the cold winter setting and lurking shadows, who adore gritty stories and happy for now endings.
