Review: The Spirit Key is the first book in Parker William’s paranormal series, Lock and Key. The audio narration is performed by Collin Darcy.

I don’t have a heck of a lot of experience when it comes to Parker Williams. I think I’ve only ever read one or two books by the author, books that from memory I know that I enjoyed them for reasons that escape me at this point in time. I also have much the same opinion of Collin Darcy as the narrator, I know that I’ve heard him narrate at least a couple of audio books before but nothing immediately comes to mind. So, I’ve effectively come into this book blind and with no expectations.

Overall, I found this a rather enjoyable story, although I admit that I found it a tad slow in parts. I really enjoyed the way Williams told the story, first starting in flashback before picking up and telling the story. I felt that the voice and tone of Collin Darcy really complimented the personalities of the characters. It certainly enhanced the story for me and particularly enjoyed the voice he gave one of the MCs, Scott.

I don’t want to go too much into the story, because I feel that the blurb tells the reader everything they need to know and I don’t want to spoil anything terribly. There is a lot of internal battles and self-discovery that dominate much of the book, as well as exploring the evolving relationship between the two MCs. You can’t say that there is no character development, because there is so much depth and complexity to these character. Unfortunately, I just felt that there were times where I was missing an emotional connection to either MC.

The story is mostly told from the POV of Scott Fogel. He starts the book by going through the events of his childhood, specifically from the moment where he had drowned in an accident before being revived, that led him to leave his family and friends behind and ran away to Chicago. It’s a really sad and heart breaking start to a story, he details his trauma while he is dealing with the talent that came about after he drowned, the ability to see and communicate with ghosts/spirits. But the death of his best friends mother brings her ghost telling him he needs to go home and help his friend. And so he does.

Scott arrives on the doorstep his best friend, who he happens to love, Tim Jennessee. Adding to the stress of having to confront the people he ran away from, after not seeing any ghosts while in Chicago, the dead are once again appearing to Scott. It’s a rocky start, but Tim’s heart isn’t totally hardened to Scott. It’s more that he spent five years worrying and grieving over his friend, unsure of what to think. Then Scott reappears.

It takes time for these guys to get on track and that’s when the next major part of the plot kicks in. Scott discovers that an evil spirit has latched onto Tim and his working on making him weaker until it can make Tim his instrument to kill. But there is a mystery that begins to unravel, relating to Scott’s talent and Tim’s mother. It’s an interesting turn.

I’m interested to see what happens next in this series and where it will take us.

Murder In Torbaydos

by

Ian James Krender

What could possibly go wrong when buying an old Victorian property by the seaside to remodel and run as a hotel. Plenty when the ghostly inhabitants from past generations want their say…

Marjorie, Stanley, and the apple of their eyes—their camp son Christopher, buy a leaky wreck, transforming it into a 1970s house of wonders. Marjorie’s Bejam inspired cuisine soon puts their seaside guesthouse on the tourist map. The utterly vile Marjorie’s ambitions for her henpecked husband will stop at nothing, even murder when it comes to climbing to the top.

Meanwhile, in the 2000s, gay couple, Jez and Graham—who have exquisite taste, escape the London rat race and buy the same building—now derelict and full of Marjorie’s draylon headboards and lace curtains. They refurbish it into a modern five-star hotel, the self-described jewel in the crown of English seaside hotels.

Jez, a shallow yet fabulous queen with a penchant for designer clothes, is soon led astray by the opportunity of television fame, a not-so-straight Bulgarian boxer, and a cocaine-fueled celebrity lifestyle—all overseen by the malevolent spirits, an evil bunch, determined to create misery for all.

Warning: scenes of graphic violence, the deaths of secondary characters, and references to drug addiction and cheating

My brother Leo and I are exactly like most people—we do what we can to scrape by, we watch each other’s backs, and we fight about stupid stuff… but there is one tiny thing that’s a bit strange about us. We see ghosts. Well, I see ghosts, he only hears them.

Our mother told me when I was young that I had a gift and that it was my duty to use that gift to help others. So that’s what I’ve done. I’ve dedicated my life to helping spirits find their way to the other side. But between meeting a really cute guy who happens to be a ghost, and heading to a haunted sanatorium for a week, I’m starting to think I may be in a little over my head. Something isn’t right at Akasha Sanatorium and for the first time, I’m actually kind of terrified.

Leo~

Being able to hear ghosts sounds cool, but the reality of it is that there’s constant whispers. Everywhere I go there are voices, and all I want is to have some peace and quiet. My brother has no idea that I’ve been haunted by a ghost every day for the last three years. He’s always there, always talking, always following me around. He hides from Xander and drives me crazy.

My brother convinced me to film some stupid paranormal investigations show. I hate it, but he loves it, so I go along with his harebrained plan. Of course, he picks a creepy sanatorium this time. And as expected, it’s awful… but at least while we’re here, I can take advantage of the hot guy with the scar that I bump into. Unfortunately, everything here is so messed up, I’m not sure we’re getting out of it alive.

Akasha Sanatorium is book one in the Malachai Brothers: Beyond The Veil series and should be read in order. This is a paranormal series with a sprinkle of romance and a small number of explicit M/M scenes.

Review: Twins Xander and Leo have abilities that aid them in their you tube show about investigating haunted locations. Leo can hear ghosts while Xander can see them. These two rely on each other ever since a house fire claimed the lives of their parents and little brother Ballard.

They are on to Akasha Sanatorium, which sounded a lot like Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Kentucky to me. There were many spine tingling scenes, many horror inducing mind numbing moments that had me on the edge of my seat. My heart wept for all the souls that were trapped in that deadly place.

Many twists and turns take place that had me intrigued. I liked all the characters and am curious about who exactly Zyler and Ato are. I absolutely loved the entire story from start to finish. I felt as though I was actually there as the story progressed. I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book as there were a few questions that I had that were not answered yet.

Fantastic read and highly recommended.

Review: This is the best hits collection bundle for John Inman and I have to say, this is truly a collection of brilliant book from an assortment of genres. I’ve read maybe one or two other John Inman books but to be quite honest, these ones have completely blown me away. I’ve rated this overall 5 out 5 – however, I am just going to make note that I also rate all of the featured novellas 5 as well.

All these stories are in the first person but brilliantly written – not once did I wonder what the other MC was thinking while reading all of these stories. The bonus is that they are all set in San Diego and I absolutely adore that city!

There are 5 stories featured, which are as follows:

Shy: 💖💖💖💖💖 5 Hearts

The story is told by Tom – he is a mild mannered banker with a debilitating case of shyness. At an ex’s part he meets Frank – who also shares the same social anxiety. What ensues is a comedy of errors as the two guys overcome their anxiety and get to know each other.

This is funny and irreverent. The guys share a wonderful attraction which is over and above their shared disorder. Throw in a hilarious Chihuahua with a mind of its own and you got the start of a great relationship. Both Tom and Frank some bad apples in their lives but they can overcome any obstacle. I had kind of guessed the ending – at least part of it – but it is a tad gruesome and had me thinking of the TV show Deadwood. (Any fan of Deadwood will know what I mean when I say pigs!).

Loving Hector: 💖💖💖💖💖 5 Hearts

The person telling this story is Dillard Brown – he has a nutty family including a mother who insists he’s straight and a grandfather whose sexuality seems to be fluid. He finds a stray dog – which he saves – and affectionately names it Chester while he half heartedly tries to track down the owner. Then enter, Hector, owner of said dog and actually made a brief (albeit nameless) appearance before the dog came onto the scene!

This book is nothing short of hilarious. Chester is on one escapade to another and quickly attaches himself to Dill after being returned to Hector. Dill and Hector’s relationship is nothing but bumpy but the attraction between the guys and their personalities – they are made for each other (quite literally). Then there are the minor characters, Dill’s boss’s and his grandfather take the prize for hilarity while his parents are simply nutty. His mother is completely adorable even if she is in her own little world.  Then there is Hector’s ex (Valdemaro, though I kept thinking Voldemorte), the only thing not funny about this book: it was a good storyline though and brought the characters together wonderfully.

Hobbled: 💖💖💖💖💖 5 Hearts

This is basically Rear Window re-told (which had been re-told as the movie Disturbia, too) with two young nineteen year old gay guys who happen to be developing a romantic relationship on the side. The narrator is Danny – he had something of a tantrum at work and now has not only a cast one leg from the incident but he also has a police ankle device from the judge after his ex-boss pressed charges.

So we have a bored teenager alone because his father has to go away for work and there are reports of a serial killer on the rampage after young guys. I don’t want to give away the back story because I think the whole “Rear Window” thing is a big give away. When a new neighbour moves in and Danny meets with some precocious young boys the drama and the mystery escalates rapidly. I will admit that it took me some time to figure things out but I will admit the side story with Danny’s father I had figured out as soon as the first clue was handed out.

Luke and Danny are really sweet together and their story is a great ride!

Serenading Stanley: 💖💖💖💖💖 5 Hearts

This is book 1 of John Inman’s series Belladonna Arms and after reading Serenading Stanley I definitely want to (need to) read the rest of the series. Shy archaeology student, Stanley, moves into the fairly cheap Belladonna Arms so that he could be closer to uni (against the wishes of his mother who lives in the city). There he meets the hot and newly graduated nurse, Roger. Stanley is very reticent when it comes to Roger’s advances and so Roger has no choice but to woo the man.

This is another funny story (though still did not laugh as much as I did in Shy and Loving Hector). Besides Stanley and Roger, there are a whole host of quirky characters including transgender, transvestite queens, and just a few oddball gay men that all call the Belladonna Arms home. This is a lot of fun and very sexy.

Spirit:💖💖💖💖💖 5 Hearts

Time for a bit of a spooky story! Again, this is another book where I had elements of the story figured out where it comes to the ghost. I don’t want to go into too much details because it is a really interesting story that you will enjoy – even if, like me, you have figured out some of the major parts of the big picture, the smaller details are really great.

The story is told from the POV of Jason, who has been left as the carer of his nephew, Timmy, for a month while his sister and her less than stellar boyfriend go off on a holiday. Immediately Timmy starts talking about the man in the walls of his uncle’s house. Then Jason runs into the brother of his sister’s ex-husband, Sam. Sam and his family have not seen Timmy since his brother disappeared. That is where the true mystery starts. It also helps that there was a definite spark of attraction the moment that the two guys met.

There is some drama, romance, mystery, some of the hysterical one liners that I now come to expect with John’s writing and add into that a dash of horror. This is one spectacularly spooky story! It is so damn creepy that I love it!

Blurb: Can love survive the perils of MacGregor House?

The Supernatural Explorers are back and looking for their next big paranormal case. They might’ve found it in a plea from Payne, a mild-mannered librarian who has inherited the family mansion—MacGregor House. Since moving in a few months ago, Payne’s exhausted the list of ghost hunters and experts in his quest for help. The Supers are his last chance.

So why does normally good-natured cameraman Will take an instant dislike to Payne? For that matter, why has he felt irritable and angry since they arrived at the site? It soon becomes clear that the answers they seek will be found in the basement—where nobody has gone since Payne was a little boy. As the haunting grows deadlier, things get sweeter between Will and Payne, but all hell’s about to break loose when they breach the basement door.

Will they be ready?

Review: The Librarian’s Ghost is the second book in Sean Michael’s The Supers series. I’ve been really looking forward to reading this one after really enjoying the first book, The Supers. Not only that, I’ve enjoyed a number of Sean Michael’s books in the past and totally keen to give the author another go. I don’t think you need to have read the first book to enjoy this one, but since I loved the first book I totally recommend reading it if you haven’t already.

This is a fun story that reminds me something of a gothic romance. You got the big, old family estate that has more things that go bump in the night than you can poke a stick at. You have an almost recluse-type owner who inherited the place from his grandfather. Then you got the stranger who comes to help uncover the big mystery that is holding spirits to the home.

That’s the key elements. Now for the MCs: one is the cameraman for The Supernatural Explorers, the group of friends who investigate haunted buildings, partly in the hope to make a television show. Will has been on enough cases to know that ghosts are real, but he still has a healthy skepticism.

Their client, Payne Macgregor, is a quiet librarian who likes to keep to himself and has painstakingly tried to renovate the rambling family mansion that he had inherited from his grandparents. His grandmother, who had recently died, hadn’t exactly made it a secret that there were things that could hurt Payne in the home. However, it took Payne some time before he gave into the fact that he had ghosts. He just needed to find someone, or some people that could help him get rid of his angry housemates.

As I said before, the story is fun and I don’t want to give too much away. This is a story that incorporates ghost hunting with family folklore. It’s the stories from the Macgregor family’s past that give the most important details. The problem is Payne doesn’t know how to handle it all.

If you’re not sure this is the type of book for you, I recommend this one for people that like watching supernatural investigations and would be intrigued in reading one where there is some great romance.

Shorty’s Review: 💖💖💖💖💖 5 Hearts

A fascinating tale about two young men, Tim and Scott, who find out they are more than they thought. Their journey is not without heartache, loss and self discovery as well as ghosts calling out for help and a an evil spirit hellbent on continuing his evil existence and work no matter the cost.

I truly loved everything about the paths that Tim and Scotty found themselves on from a young age. They had to deal with things they were too young to understand at the time. Scotty decides to run from the ghosts and travels to Chicago when he’s a young man. After five years the ghost of Tim’s mother implores him back to help Tim before something bad happens. Upon seeing Tim Scotty knows he never should have left and so begins the journey of discovering who they are and what their purpose is in life to each and others.

I loved all the side characters as they added a better understanding to the story. The serial killer ghost was a nasty piece of work to say the least. I could not believe how long he had been around for doing what he was doing. Tim has some bitter feelings for Scotty which was understandable.

The explanation of what the lock and key were was fascinating. I was swept up in the entire story from start to finish and was sad when it ended as I wanted more. The only thing I wanted to know at the end which was not revealed was what Tim did to the ghost that had been trying to possess him.

Fast paced, edge of your seat, suspenseful and intriguing beginning to a series that I am looking forward to diving into further.

Fantastic read and highly recommended.

Pixie’s Review:  💖💖💖💖💖 5 Hearts

I’ll be honest, there isn’t much that I can add to Shorty’s review.

The Spirit Key is a superbly crafted paranormal story that drags you in and holds on till you get to the last page. Both Scotty and Tim are excellent characters, they have quite a bit to work through to get to on the same page. It’s far from easy and there are one or two scenes that have you gritting your teeth and praying that they can work things out.

Now, Tim proves to be possessed so I am gonna warn you that it is a truly evil spirit and it makes Tim do some things that he would never dream of doing. It is hard to read in those moments and know that the evil spirit gets whats coming to it.

Scotty has a lot to discover about his gifts and how to accept them, and Tim has a lot to overcome. Both men will need to forgive themselves for them to move forward with their relationship, and it’s not easy for either of them.

The background story really is fascinating and as we delve into the responsibility of the Lock and Key we understand just what Scotty and Tim face in the future.

I recommend this to those who adore stories of spirits, forgiveness, finding a new future, returning to the love of your life, and a very interesting ending.

Review: Mr. Stanhope was a very wealthy man and I am not just speaking about money. He had a love that was so strong that it continued even after his one and only passed on. He wanted to give what he has to two that would find the love just as he had. He also had the help of his best friend and employee, not to mention a certain ghost. A ghost that sees all and you can bet your ass will tell his love what is going on.

Larry was about to lose it all, his apartment, his job and more. He was at his wits end, that is until he saw an add in the paper for a live in helper. Bo is a fry cook that wanted to become a chef, but the school where he was at closed and stole all their money. It would look like love might just come bite these two in the ass. Then another young man, Jimmy is hired to do the garden. Three sexy men but one has a twist.

This story when one first starts reading it might think that this story goes in a certain way, but this author throws in a monkey wrench that will leave you wanting to smack someone. It is a very slow paced story that seems to work for this one. It does have its twists and turns to it that kept my attention throughout the whole book. I think the pervy ghost was one hell of a hit with me. He has a twisted sense of humor in his own way, but he sure is protective of his love. There is a happily ever after for two of the young men.

Out of all the characters I think Larry is the one I truly liked best, his heart was so pure. Bo came off good at first but then you can see the disaster in the making. Jimmy was sweet and caring especially with Larry. Roger’s heart was so good that he wanted to be with his love, but wanted to pass that love on to others. His plan was wicked cool and I had a blast with it.

I truly loved this book and can’t wait to get my hands on the next story. I will definitely be on the lookout for more of his books. I can guarantee that you will love this story as much as I did.

Matt Westin was shocked when he ran into Cody, his grade-school best friend—pleased, but shocked. Devastatingly handsome was an understatement when it came to Cody, with his hazel eyes, wide smiles, and broad shoulders.

It was less shocking, months later, when Matt found out just how far he’d go for Cody. A desperate request for Matt to play his boyfriend over Christmas and save him from his mom’s meddling blind-date plans completely hammered that fact home.

Matt couldn’t resist saying yes, not when it meant getting closer to Cody. The only question was how would he ever be able to let him go when it was over?

Review: I don’t think I have a concrete impression of author Sean Michael. I love the writing style, but it all comes down to the plot line itself and substance of the story as to if I finish and enjoy a book. In general, I find his books enjoyable, but I can’t say that I love every one of them.

The Supers is about a group of ghost busters, looking to make their big break. It’s a pretty cool concept that was executed great in both writing and in Kenneth Obi’s narration. In fact, Obi is becoming of one my favorite MM narrators lately. I like his tone and the subtle nuances Obi brings, particularly to a MM paranormal book which doesn’t have a set “alpha”. The characters are ordinary guys and as such Obi gives these guys the right voice and tone. In short, everything just works.

The book follows Blaine loves being a part of the group. Hard times on the family farm means that he had to put on hold his plans of moving away to help his parents. His parents are overly impressed by his second job, but they don’t make a fuss. It is basically Blaine’s unwinding time. He just happens to chase after ghosts and trying to capture them on audio or camera. After losing their usual tech person who monitors cameras, recordings, etc. their group manager hires Flynn, who is a newly graduated sound technician. Flynn fits in, as the blurb says, but he especially hits it off with Blaine.

These guys are very sweet and great chemistry together. An underlying story, as hinted in the blurb about the mystery of room 204, really adds to their budding relationship. In my opinion, the mystery of room 204 is THE highlight of this story.

This book is great for anyone who loves watching those ghost hunter type of shows. I love the underlying story which emerges at the end; it really added a certain spice that was both sad and perfect. Like when I read the book, I’m super excited to find out what the rest of the series has in store.

Can love survive the perils of MacGregor House?

Review: I loved the couple in this book. James is military veteran and works at the hotel. Franklin is a true gentleman that keeps to himself though he follows the same routine every night. James is attracted to Franklin so when one night Franklin is not in his usual spot James goes looking for him. They then become drawn in a fight for their lives as the mystery begins to unravel.

I loved this entire book. It draws you in from the start and does not let go until the very end. Great details along with breath-taking suspense scenes leave the reader wanting more.

Highly recommended.

Jason Thomas had always been obsessed with the ghost stories he’d watched on television from the time he was a kid. He’d always dreamed of visiting those haunted places, and playing amateur ghost hunters with his best friend Wade. As they grew older, Jason’s fascination with ghosts grew as well, and he’d drag Wade along to different haunted houses or hotels, always hoping to see an actual ghost.

Wade Rivers loved spending time with Jason, even if it meant he’d have to endure another creepy, supposedly haunted location. Friends since they were kids, and always inseparable, Wade’s feelings for Jason deepened from friendship into something more. Unfortunately, so did his fear of the places Jason wanted to explore.

The chance to spend a weekend alone in a famous haunted house was too much for Jason to resist, and almost too much for Wade to endure. He knew going to the deserted house was everything Jason had ever dreamed of, so Wade tried to put his fears aside. But when paranormal things start to happen, admitting to Jason how he feels suddenly isn’t the scariest thing Wade will encounter.

Review: For me, Sean Michael is one of those authors where I can take it or leave it. I love the writing style, but it completely up to the plot line itself and substance of the story as to if I finish and enjoy a book. Probably not explaining myself properly, that is true of every book, but put it this way: there are some that I love and some that I don’t.

The Supers is a really cool book about a group of ghost busters, looking to make their big break. Blaine loves being a part of the group. Hard times on the family farm means that he had to put on hold his plans of moving away to help his parents. His parents are overly impressed by his second job but they don’t make a fuss. These guys are super sweet and have instant chemistry. An underlying story, as hinted in the blurb about the mystery of room 204, really adds to their budding relationship. However, I am not about to spoil a moment of that because to be perfectly, the mystery of room 204 is THE highlight of this story. I totally loved it!

This book is great for anyone who loves watching those ghost hunter type of shows (I’m a Most Haunted addict myself). I love the underlying story which emerges at the end; it really added a certain spice to the story that was both sad and perfect. I’m intrigued and excited to find out that this one is the first in a series.

Review: A wonderful take on a classic tale. I found E.B. Scrudge to be the perfect scrooge. Overbearing, mean and callous. At times this man gets put in his place when he visited by several spirits. The ghosts in this story are characters themselves with a humorous yet serious side to them all.

Willie, E.B.’s secretary was sweet and kind. I felt sorry for him as he harboured feelings for Scrudge. I was very glad when Scrudge started realizing how he treated others especially Willie.

I really enjoyed the entire story. Seeing the way you’ve treated people in the past and present is no picnic. But seeing what could be in the future is downright terrifying at ties. Especially if you don’t heed the warnings you are given.

Great read on a fantastic classic.

Blurb: SSA Rain Christiansen used to be the agency’s golden boy. It just takes one moment of weakness, one slight, tiny, itty-bitty paranormal sighting, and all of a sudden he’s the agency’s embarrassment. His boss gives him one last chance to redeem himself—go down to Brickell Bay, play nice with the local police, and leave the ghost sightings behind. Rain is determined to do exactly that, even if it kills him.

Cold-case detective Daniel McKenna’s latest investigation is going nowhere fast. Five years earlier, high school student Amy Greene went missing after leaving her part-time job and was never seen again. Daniel is glad to finally have the FBI help that his department requested, even if it does come in the form of his ex.

It doesn’t help that Rain is pretty sure he’s falling in love with Danny all over again—if he ever stopped. Add to that the frustration of seeing ghosts at every turn while he works a case that’s stalled in its tracks, and Rain is starting to wonder if second chances and happy endings are just for fairy tales.

Review: This is the first book by this author that I have read and I have to say it will not be the last.  I have always loved paranormal romance especially if it is also m/m.  When I saw the title to this, I really wanted to get my hands on it.  The cover of the book is just a bit creepy, but for this type of story let’s just say it rocked.

Rain is a federal agent who has had a bit of bad luck one would say.  He see’s spirits and doesn’t really believe that he sees them.  So much so that he just figured he was losing it.  He had not mentioned it to anyone, until one day he told a family that their daughter was gone.  You can guess which way his job was going to go with that one, but his boss decided to give him one last chance.  To find out what happened to a young girl.  To top it off it would send him home, to the one man he had loved and left.

Danny had been in love with Rain from the very beginning but he didn’t trust him not to run.  Five years ago Amy went missing and now the FBI was sending in a specialist.  A specialist that was also his ex.  He wasn’t too sure what to expect, but it sure wasn’t the fact that Rain saw spirits.  Things heat up and there are a lot of twists in this story.  Especially when you add in Ethan, who just happens to be dead.

When I started reading it, the story was a very slow paced but it soon picks up. I can say that I hope this author makes this into a series because I want more from Rain.  It caught my attention and damn if it didn’t keep it all the way to the end.  There are ghosts, hot sex, dangerous situations and suspense in this story, plus so much more.  It gave me everything I could possibly want in a story and I can guarantee that you will get a kick out of it also.

This is one story that I would recommend to all.
