Blurb:   When small-time thief Timmy Harwell recklessly “borrows” a Cadillac for a joyride, he doesn’t expect to find a cool $100,000 in the trunk. His elation turns to terror when he realizes the SUV and the dough belong to Miguel Garcia, aka El Poco, a Tijuana drug dealer with a nasty reputation. Timmy sees only one way out: leave the stolen car behind and run as fast as he can.

His getaway is cut short when a storm strands him outside Jasper Stone’s secluded mountain cabin. Jasper finds Timmy in his shed, unconscious and burning up with fever, and takes care of the younger man, nursing him back to health. The two begin to grow close, but Jasper, a writer who seeks only solitude, is everything Timmy isn’t. Straightforward, honest, and kind.

Timmy needs Jasper’s help—and wants his respect—so he hides his dishonest habits. But when El Poco comes after him, Timmy realizes he’s not the only one at risk. His actions have also put Jasper in harm’s way. Honesty now could mean Timmy loses the man he’s come to love, but not being honest could mean far worse.

Review:  A story that captures the setting well, but fails to capture this reader’s heart.

The things I liked were the animals and the sense of place. Lola in particular stuck out as being such a sweet, loyal dog and I thought she made a nice character. There’s also a lot of good description that used more than just the visual sense, but taste, touch and sound as well.

Unfortunately, it hit too many of my triggers. Too much exposition, telling, flashbacks, and a strange perspective, which might have been omniscient? Some of Jasper’s thoughts felt inappropriate to the moment, and the sex scenes were uncomfortable to read—especially as poor choices for similes were used.

All this made it difficult for me to get into the story. I think the writing and ideas were all there, but could have been put to better effect if written in a more active tense.

Appearances Matter by Jeff Erno

AppearancesMatterLG2nd EditionDumb Jock: Book Three

At age sixteen, Todd Hoffman is a social outcast. He lives with his mother in a rundown mobile home and doesn’t wear the nice clothes or drive fancy cars like the other students. He has one outlet: he secretly writes fan fiction about a boy falling in love with another boy he’s crushing on, and posts it online.

When Galen Caulfield, Todd’s real life object of affection, notices him and asks him out, Todd feels like he’s living his fantasy. Soon enough he realizes that fantasy and reality are two very different propositions.

Galen is the high school soccer team captain, clearly out of Todd’s league. On top of that, he’s popular, good-looking, and confident, so everyone thinks he’s straight. Now it’s up to Todd to decide whether Galen is the boy of his dreams or just another dumb jock.

Positive by Tia Fielding

PositiveLGEven after a decade, the life that journalist Brent Walsh and Milwaukee homicide detective Shawn Mackey have made together is far from boring. But when a new case cuts a weekend getaway short, they aren’t quite prepared for how it will impact their personal lives. Blurb: With the world suddenly teeming with zombies, Charlie and Bobby are fighting to stay alive. Being about as gay as two people can be, they insist on doing it with panache.

Even with the planet throwing up its legs in submission, there is no reason a couple of style-conscious guys can’t look good while saying good-bye to the age of man and ushering in the age of… God knows what. Amoebas, maybe. With their loyal zombie poodle, Mimi, at their side, they bravely face the apocalypse head-on.

Death, destruction, and the undead they can deal with. But without electricity, it’s the depressing lack of blow-dryers and cappuccino machines that really pisses them off—until Bobby goes missing! Suddenly Charlie has more than fluffy hair and a good cup of coffee to worry about….

Review: Charlie and Bobby are woken one morning by a car alarm to a world that has mysteriously changed.  They seem to be the only two humans still alive on the planet. Cars are left running in the streets, shop doors stand open, but all of humanity seems to have disappeared… well except for the odd human zombie. Freak weather, zombie bashing and food hunting they can handle, no hair dryers and no Starbucks is really pushing it, but zombie animals really freak them out. Together they can handle anything, but then Bobby disappears, just what will Charlie do?

Oh my God *snort chuckle* this is absolutely wonderful, a humorous zombie story with two wonderful characters. Charlie and Bobby wake to a world that has changed, there are no other humans that they can find… well, except the odd zombie here and there. There is no electricity (no hairdryers or cappuccinos damn you world) and the weather is really freaky, snow one day and blistering sun the next. Charlie and Bobby can manage to survive, as long as they have each other… oh and the zombie poodle, Mimi, they decide to keep. But, when Bobby mysteriously disappears, Charlie sets out to find out what has happened to the world and for that he needs to capture a zombie.

Charlie and Bobby are incredible. I swear if there is ever a real zombie apocalypse I want them on my team. When the story starts Charlie is casually digging a grave while Bobby is sunning in a hammock and we begin to learn how the world has changed and how they are coping.  And it is nothing like you would have thought. Charlie and Bobby carry their zombie apocalypse with flair, panache and humor. There is plenty of sex for our cute queens and some fearsome frights (zombie crickets!!), but it isn’t until Bobby disappears that Charlie begins to really panic.

John Inman has written a delightful story that will have you chuckling, grimacing and giggling (in that order).  It will have you trying to guess what has happened to the world. Gods’ Rapture? Aliens? Government experiment? But, you will not figure it out until the author tells us… and I never saw it coming *shakes head* not even for a second did it even cross my mind. You will adore Charlie and Bobby and even Mimi grows on you after she stops being disgusting *shudder*.

I have to recommend this to those who adore zombie apocalypse, two absolute queens who love each other, humor, giggles and chuckles, hot sex, zombie animals, a twist that smacks you in the face and a very happy ending. You know what… I think everyone should read this just because it is absolutely wonderful, it’s an easy read filled with humor with just a touch of disgusting in places, with great characters and a great storyline.

The only person he can trust is Harry, a man twice his age and the closest thing to a friend Sean has ever known. Harry Connors has loved Sean since their first night together, and now, with danger hard at their heels, Harry will do anything to protect the tough, strangely vulnerable young man who begs him for help.

Harry had better be serious about offering protection, though, because the demons threatening Sean’s life are no joke. Only a hard winter rain will wash away the evil that drove Sean Andros to the streets, and Sean and Harry are going to have to be strong if they plan on sticking around for the sun.

Review: Sean is in serious trouble.   His past has come back for him, but he really doesn’t have a clue who from his past it could be.   When Sean flees the scene of a murder, he runs right into Harry’s arms.  Harry convinces Sean to let him help and it is the beginning of a game of cat and mouse with an insane killer who will stop at nothing to make Sean pay.  As the two men try to think of a way to end the game, they become what Harry had always hoped for.

This is an incredible well-written story that starts out intense and doesn’t let up until the very end.  Sean is a hustler and while he dreams of having a better life, he knows that at the moment hustling pays well.  Harry owns his own hair salon and is forty-five.   He dreams of having a relationship with Sean, who is more than half his age. These two men come together when Sean needs protection and it is a fight for both of them to survive.  The pale man is out to punish Sean.   Sean caused him to commit his one sin and now he needs cleansing, he is doing God’s work, a mission that would give him absolution and nothing will stand in his way.

This book is from several POVs, from Harry and Sean’s, to the Pale man, to the lead detectives.   We get a well-rounded full view of all aspects of the story and I have to say I loved it.   We get the feelings of each person and the reasons behind why they do stuff.  So, instead of sitting there baffled by what a person has done you completely understand exactly what is going on.  You get to relate to characters that we wouldn’t normally get the chance to and it gave the author a wider scope to work with. The main story in this book is about the plan to set-up and kill Sean, the reason behind it and the murders the Pale man commits.   The story of Harry and Sean is there, but it lingers in the background, only coming forward when it needs to.  We also get to know the two main detectives very well and they add a bit of light relief at times.

The relationship between Harry and Sean really is secondary, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t important because seeing these two come together is really nice.   Yes, at first, you doubt that Sean is being serious, but then you realize that he really does genuinely care for Harry and they fit together nicely.

With this one I am going to recommend it to those who love mystery, suspense, danger, tension, conflict, protective friends, fantastic characters, a brilliant story-line and a happy ending for Sean and Harry.
