Appearances Matter by Jeff Erno

AppearancesMatterLG2nd EditionDumb Jock: Book Three

At age sixteen, Todd Hoffman is a social outcast. He lives with his mother in a rundown mobile home and doesn’t wear the nice clothes or drive fancy cars like the other students. He has one outlet: he secretly writes fan fiction about a boy falling in love with another boy he’s crushing on, and posts it online.

When Galen Caulfield, Todd’s real life object of affection, notices him and asks him out, Todd feels like he’s living his fantasy. Soon enough he realizes that fantasy and reality are two very different propositions.

Galen is the high school soccer team captain, clearly out of Todd’s league. On top of that, he’s popular, good-looking, and confident, so everyone thinks he’s straight. Now it’s up to Todd to decide whether Galen is the boy of his dreams or just another dumb jock.

Stealing the Wind by Shira Anthony

StealingTheWindLGMermen of Ea: Book One

Taren Laxley has never known anything but life as a slave. When a lusty pirate kidnaps him and holds him prisoner on his ship, Taren embraces the chance to realize his dream of a seagoing life. Not only does the pirate captain offer him freedom in exchange for three years of labor and sexual servitude, but the pleasures Taren finds when he joins the captain and first mate in bed far surpass his greatest fantasies.

Then, during a storm, Taren dives overboard to save another sailor and is lost at sea. He’s rescued by Ian Dunaidh, the enigmatic and seemingly ageless captain of a rival ship, the Phantom, and Taren feels an overwhelming attraction to Ian that Ian appears to share. Soon Taren learns a secret that will change his life forever: Ian and his people are Ea, shape-shifting merfolk… and Taren is one of them too. Bound to each other by a fierce passion neither can explain or deny, Taren and Ian are soon embroiled in a war and forced to fight for a future—not only for themselves but for all their kind.

Positive by Tia Fielding

PositiveLGEven after a decade, the life that journalist Brent Walsh and Milwaukee homicide detective Shawn Mackey have made together is far from boring. But when a new case cuts a weekend getaway short, they aren’t quite prepared for how it will impact their personal lives. Suddenly there’s too much to juggle: Shawn will be working the case of the sharpshooter who is trying to infect random people with HIV, Brent needs to cover the story but fears a conflict of interest, one of Shawn’s colleagues is attracted to him, and Brent sincerely needs to mend the painful break with his childhood best friend, Ollie, and heal their broken hearts.

Though the case comes to a close, it’s not the end of their troubles. Shawn and Brent still face a past of old white lies, a present possibility of inviting another man to their bed, and a future with children, not to mention health issues and national fallout from the case. It’s enough to make them want to run away—until they realize they have to face those challenges head-on so they can get on with the life of love they’re hoping for.

Blurb: The year 2089 finds Australia split between east and west, with a wall to ensure the east stays safe. College student Aiden Taylor is traveling from Perth to Sydney to see Men at Work, who have been revived after cryogenic freezing. Regrettably, only days into his trip, his moped is stolen—and then he meets a naked man from the east. The man turns out to be Matthew King, who offers Aiden a ride—no strings attached—all the way to Sydney.

When another attack occurs the following night, Aiden discovers Matthew’s impossible secret: he’s a were-kanga. At least that gives them something to talk about when they experience delays at the wall. One thing leads to another, and soon friends with benefits turns into something more. But when the summer is over, Aiden must return to school in Perth. How can he leave Matthew behind?

Review: Australia has been split in two since 2050 with the East shutting itself off from the West when someone accidentally caused a nuclear explosion. Aiden is looking forward to the Men At Work comeback concert and sets off from Perth for Sydney, it’s a long journey by himself on his moped, but he desperately wants to see the group. Unfortunately, his moped is stolen along with his money and his prized ticket. Aiden then he meets a naked man, Matthew, who turns into his shining knight who offers him a ride to Sydney. When Aiden is attacked again Matthew comes to his rescue and Aiden discovers the myth about were-kanga’s is true, both men have secrets that they hide and it gives them a lot to talk about when they are held up at the border. They become close but Aiden’s time in Sydney is limited, could they have something more than just a summer romance?

This is a great story that was surprisingly funny and sweet in equal measure. Aiden is a brilliant character who has an unhealthy obsession with murderous Tasmanian devils; his inner monologue is hilarious and is even funnier when it slips out of his mouth. Matthew is kind and generous and is the perfect foil to Aiden’s slightly manic mind, they fit together from the start and make a great couple especially when Aiden stops panicking. The shifter aspect isn’t really that much of a big deal and neither is Aiden’s mutation, it’s more a story of two men who meet on the road and hit it off, shacking up together and falling in love but then one has to leave to return to his life and they decide what to do for the future.

The story is an easy fun read that has the twist of Matthew being in the closet and his dad trying to fit him up with a woman, rather than being angsty it is just a bit tense with some great reactions from Aiden that has you smiling quite often. There is some great sex and Matthew and Aiden certainly make the most of it. What I loved most about this story was that although they quickly jumped into bed together they spent plenty of time getting to know each other before saying ‘I Love You’ and Matthew also had a great explanation for his initial feeling for Aiden.

I recommend this if you want a different kind of shifter, if you want a humorous light read, if you want guys falling in love and finding their happy ever after, this is definitely a story that you should give a chance.

Review:  This short sip was nothing short of a pleasant surprise. While it could be labeled simply as a Halloween story with a twist or just ordinary Sci-Fi, once you start reading you just won’t care.

Aran is an alien who just adores Halloween. It’s the only time of the year when he can show his real appearance, pointy ears, scales and pretty hair, and Aran loves the way he looks. After all, he has particularly exquisite features that stand out even on his planet.

Eight years Earth side and he’s always managed to have a good Halloween night with no one the wiser when it comes to his ‘make up’ skills, except this one night, when Booker charms the pants off him with his shy behavior turned wild once drunk.

It’s a really short story and there is no point in telling you all aspects of the plot, but I will say that it was really sweet and funny and you will definitely want more. Sure, it does lack characterization, especially when it comes to Booker and more of pretty much everything wouldn’t have hurt, but as a short story it’s perfectly adorable and will keep you entertained.

Earth Boys Are Easy was a first for me by this author, but as soon as I clicked on the author profile looking for more, I couldn’t have rated it with any fewer stars.  Recommended.

Blurb: Jeremy Decker is preparing for the worst summer of his life, teaching summer school and healing from his recent breakup. But maybe his sexy young teaching assistant will be able to put an end to Jeremy’s summer doldrums.

English teacher Jeremy Decker’s split with his boyfriend has left him with no plans for the summer and credit card debt. One solution is to teach summer history classes. College history major Lucas Van Sloan is brought in to assist Jeremy, and is thrilled to have a summer job that doesn’t include supervising kids at the hometown swimming pool.

A summer heat wave has Jeremy snarlier than even upbeat Lucas can handle. Lucas drags the teacher back to his place and out of the heat, determined to pull Jeremy into his bed while he has him there. However, Jeremy’s ex isn’t quite ready to let go, and a college student may be no competition for a high-powered attorney.

Review: Jeremy is not looking forward to the summer; he has just split with his boyfriend, has huge credit card debts and is teaching summer school. And to top it all off, his A/C breaks in the middle of a heat wave. Things begin to look up when Lucas starts as his assistant. But, Jeremy tries to keep his distance as Lucas is eight years younger than him. Lucas doesn’t care about age, he just cares about the hot sexy teacher he is working with. Now, if only he can tempt him with a nice cool pool and working A/C.

This is a very good novella that flows smoothly and is well written. Jeremy caught his boyfriend with his pants down and a whip in his hands and both of those were huge deal breakers for Jeremy.  Now, he has to work through the summer to pay off the debts that visiting his boyfriend caused. When he meets Lucas he is cautious, but soon falls under the younger man’s spell. Lucas is happy as a clam to be working in summer school, when he meets the teacher he is assigned to he is even happier. Now, he just has to convince Jeremy to relax his guard a bit. But, as the end of summer approaches and Jeremy’s ex-boyfriend turns up the two men have decisions to make.

Jeremy and Lucas are two wonderful men, who come together and begin a relationship that means more to both of them than either of them thought. Jeremy is very wary.  He was with his ex for eight years before he realized that he never really know him. But, Jeremy learned a lot, like not taking for granted that his partner wants the same things. So with Lucas in the picture he makes sure that they are on the same page by talking with him. Lucas brings a bit of fun to the story and gets Jeremy to lighten up a bit. Lucas also doesn’t let Jeremy fall into his old ways of going with the flow and he makes sure that they are in it together every step of the way, although he is still a bit pushy.

I really enjoyed this story. Jeremy and Lucas were great characters and their story was very sweet. Their sex life was hot and I loved when they experimented a bit, very steamy kink ;-). I also loved the fact that they talked about what they expected from a relationship and from each other. I must admit to feeling sorry for the ex, David, as he was never open about what he really wanted and lost Jeremy because of it. But, if they had talked about it in the first place then both men would have saved themselves a lot of heartache and maybe been happy with people who did want the same things. Could there be a story for David in the future?

I am going to recommend this to those who love hot teachers, men being honest with each other, a hot steamy kinky love scene, hot sex, slightly older men and a happy ending.
