Kit Golden Eagle is running. From poverty, from abuse. Forced to live by his wits, the Ojibwe teen slowly succumbs to living a life of hate and lies.

Josiah Foxglove is given a second chance when he takes over his family’s spread in the shadow of the Snowy Range. A veteran of the Gulf War, he came back broken in body and spirit.

Marcus Colton buried his long-time lover and best friend three years ago. Lonely and still grieving, Marcus finds solace in keeping his business afloat but that doesn’t help him get through the long, dark nights.

Three damaged souls converge as violence wracks the small community of Centurion, WY. The town protects its own so when Kit Golden Eagle shows up, it’s easy to place blame on the stranger. It looks open and shut, but for Josiah and Marcus the facts simply don’t add up.

Something’s rotten in Centurion, something that smacks of a hate crime…

Marcus whispered. He wasn’t sure why he did, but it seemed appropriate, although his idea of stakeouts was limited to what he’d seen on TV. The actors always complained it was boring. It wasn’t, not if your stomach was tied into knots, and the whiskey you chugged in a fit of pique decided to revisit you in the form of acid reflux.

Josh hissed through the speaker, “Don’t know if we missed him, or if I’m farting in a stiff breeze.”

“Don’t mention stiff, Foxglove.”

Josh snorted, the sound rocketing through the cab and sending Marcus into a giggling jag. He’d barely gotten himself under control when Josh yelped, “Sunny bitch. I think I see the van. Damn fool’s coming down that mountain dark. Jesus Christ.”

Marcus warned, “Best not to start our engines until he’s made the turn and gets ahead of us.”

“Copy that. I’ll take point. Stay back. I don’t want you running up my ass if I have to stop fast.”

“You’re making it hard to concentrate, cowboy.” They’d been teasing each other, slinging innuendo like hash at a country diner. It had helped diffuse the tension.

Josh murmured, “Here he comes.” Marcus tensed, waiting. “What the hell?”

“What? What’s going on?”

“He just flashed his left turn signal.”

Marcus frowned, perplexed. “That’s kind of dumb. Why’d he do that?”

“Signaling?”

“Signal? Who for crying out loud? We’re the only idjits out here.”

“Maybe we aren’t.”

Review: The Eagle and the Fox: A Snowy Range Mystery is a mystery novel, so if you’re looking for a romance in the traditional sense, you’re looking in the wrong place. This isn’t my first book by this author, I quite liked her Bad Boyfriends series; I was very excited to read this new release, but it wasn’t what I expected.

I love books with a good mystery and a healthy dose of romance. In fact, I prefer the focus to be on the romance, while the mystery part is secondary and nicely woven into the plot. I believe the blurb mislead me, as did the cover. I expected a book with shifters, which this is not; the characters are Native Americans. I expected more focus on the relationship between Josh and Marcus, but we got the bare minimum for this to be considered a romance.

While the writing is good, and the story flows nicely, I can’t say I enjoyed this book. There were too many characters; let me explain. Aside from the two main characters Josh and Marcus, we have a multitude of secondary characters, and I got so confused in regard to who was who at one point, it tired me out. Also there was too much focus on the secondary characters and not enough on the main ones. I feel like I know more about Petilune and her family situation than I know about Josh and Marcus.

There are things I liked while reading this story, mostly the way the people came together and worked together in order to save that house from the fire. It showed a small society determined to fight hard in order to help one of their own. While it took over 120 pages (my PDF copy was 174 pages long) for Josh and Marcus to even kiss, and about the same for them to have sex, I think the author did a good job writing that scene. I would’ve liked more romance, but the characters were older, especially Marcus, and he wasn’t a person who considered romance important.

If I had to describe in a few words the main ideas in this book would be this: drug cartels, child endangerment, mourning and loss, PTSD and disability, crimes and teenagers gone bad and WHOA! See what I mean? Too many things that muddied the story for me; it was hard to keep up with it all. Besides, Kit was one of the characters in the blurb that I expected to know more about, but at the end, he still remains a mystery.

This is recommended to those who like mystery and romance, with more focus on the mystery and less on the romance.

  1. I haven’t read any of Nya’s books yet, but this sounds really interesting. I’ve already added it to my TBR list.
