Interview

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing J.K. Hogan, author of Unbreak Broken.

Hi J.K, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Hey, there! IRL I’m a pretty normal gal, wife and mother and fur-mommy. I stay at home with my son and alternate between writing and graphic design. I’m also currently carrying my second son.

I started out writing m/f paranormal romance—I have a series of three books if anyone is so inclined—but I started writing exclusively m/m in the last couple of years. I just have more fun doing it.

My new release, Unbreak Broken, is (probably) the conclusion to my Coming About series. It features Rory, everybody’s favorite cuddly straight guy, who ends up being not-so-straight, but not without a lot of heartache and…well, therapy. He gets paired with a sexy cop with a teenage daughter, and much drama ensues. Hope you enjoy!

Tell us something no one else knows about your characters.

Well, this may be more about me than the characters, but it pertains to them too. The poems that Addison and Alex read in the final scene of Unbreak Broken were actually poems that I wrote as a ‘real-life teenager’ myself. I had a bit of a rough time in my teens, and poetry was one of my outlets. Glad I saved everything.

Have you ever had writer’s block? How did you overcome it?

I don’t often suffer from writer’s block, because my head is usually overflowing with stories , scenes, and scenarios. When I do get stuck, I go on a long drive because that’s when my mind sort of clears and ideas start to flow.

I do suffer from what I call word block, though I recently referred to it as “word constipation,” which is basically where I know what is supposed to happen next, but I can’t find the words to make it turn out right on the page. That one is harder to overcome. Usually I just have to step away from it for a couple of days and come back with fresh eyes.

Now that I’m pregnant, it happens more often in the fog of pregnancy-brain. 🙂

What book you’ve written would you like to see made into a movie?

Honestly, I think Shadows Fall would make the best movie, considering it’s pretty much a thriller. Serial killer dramas make good movies. Would probably have to take out a few kinky things to make it mainstream, but it could be done.

Do you work on an outline or plot or just let the story takes you where it wants to go?

I’m so much a pantser, it’s scary. I have to write linearly, no jumping from scene to scene for me! That can slow down the process a lot if I get stuck, unfortunately.

Lately I’ve been bothered by my lack of efficiency, so I’ve been trying really hard to come up with a workable outline when I start a story. I usually only get about halfway through the outline before the story goes off the rails and does what it wants.

Rapid fire questions:

1 – Favorite meal

Sushi.

2 – Favorite color

Blue.

3 – Favorite ice cream flavor

Birthday cake! But it has to be the homemade, mom & pop shop kind, not store-bought.

Dr. Conlan treated me to a rare fond smile, almost motherly in its warmth. “I’m pleased to see you happier than you have been.”

I grinned back, but then my brow furrowed. “Does this make me gay?”

“Does that matter?”

“I don’t know. Should it?”

“I’ll never understand the fascination with labeling things that our society seems to have. To me, sexuality is as intangible as the universe. There’s no way to truly know what’s out there, and how it all relates to everything else.

“As humans, we seek to know, to understand, and somehow we feel that putting things in boxes and labeling helps us do that. But some things are fluid, changing and developing with the tide of the evolution of life. Do me a favor, Rory. Don’t put yourself in a box.”

I was dumbfounded, stunned speechless. I knew I’d remember Dr. Conlan’s words for the rest of my life, and I would try to stay as true to them as I could. “I won’t,” I whispered.

About J.K.

J.K. Hogan has been telling stories for as long as she can remember, beginning with writing cast lists and storylines for her toys growing up. When she finally decided to put pen to paper, magic happened. She is greatly inspired by all kinds of music and often creates a “soundtrack” for her stories as she writes them. J.K. is hoping to one day have a little something for everyone, so she’s branched out from m/f paranormal romance and added m/m contemporary romance. Who knows what’s next?

J.K. resides in North Carolina, where she was born and raised. A true southern girl at heart, she lives in the country with her husband and young son, a cat, and two champion agility dogs. If she isn’t on the agility field, J.K. can often be found chasing waterfalls in the mountains with her husband, or down in front at a blues concert. In addition to writing, she enjoys training and competing in dog sports, spending time with her large southern family, camping, boating and, of course, reading! Review: I was completely blown away by this book! I absolutely loved it! And you know what? I haven’t even read the first two books – though you can be damn sure that I want to now!!! I think I’ve used up my exclamation marks quota, but to paraphrase singer/song writer Nick Cave: I use three exclamation marks because it’s awesome.

So that being said, I am sure that this series is meant to be read in order, but there is enough background on the couples from the two previous books that I was in no way confused about the characters or the past storylines that were referred to. Namely, one MC Rory was actually married around the time of book 1 (maybe, could be book 2) and this is the continuation of his story.

Just as the blurb suggests, Rory Donovan’s life is a hot mess. He has a great career as a photography teacher and you can tell that his passion is teaching his art. His personal life, however, is not so great. His marriage is falling apart and he has been seeing a psychiatrist since before his marriage about “performance” issues.

The poor guy just really needs to find himself and that is why from the start I love Rory, was sympathetic to his plight and I just wanted him to have a HEA just like his besties have.

On the other hand we have Bennett Foster, he’s a Coast guard officer and while he is generally out he doesn’t advertise the fact that he’s gay, especially at work. When he was a teen, he and his best friend, Jessica, fooled around which resulted in their now emo teenage daughter, Addison. He’s a great guy, supportive of Jessie and a great father. The fact that he’s a hot coast guard is just the icing on the cake.

As minor characters go, I have to give a special mention to Addison and Jessica. I love the relationship between Ben and his BFF, which never fell apart despite the fact they had a daughter. Jessie always knew and accepted that Ben was gay.

As for Addison, she’s that special character that kind of gives us those important life lessons you get throughout books. She’s a dark horse, that’s for sure, and beneath all that teenage emo personality and going through her own difficult time, she certainly taught the guys (and the reader) a lot.

This is one of those books that I would give a blanket recommendation. If you like your romance with: sweetness, angsty/emotive kids, a character on a journey of self discovery, wonderful BFF’s, HEAs – there is even a sprinkling of illness and danger, I think it’s safe to say you’ll get a lot of enjoyment out of this one.
