(Shifter Uprising 01)
by

Lisa & Thomas J. Oliver

Carlin is an Alpha Wolf Fighter, one of only three in the top spots at the Souterrain – an underground fighting club, run by the Elite to punish shifters who have gone outside of the laws. He’s happy enough, only has to fight exhibition matches, has his own apartment space, food and sex on tap – yep, life it good. So when Martin offers him the chance to fight for his freedom, Carlin turns it down. It’s no fun being a lone wolf and Carlin is quite happy where he is.

Then Lucas catches his eye. A handsome man, a stunning fighter, moving up through the ranks fast.  Lucas might not have the killer attitude that most men at the Souterrain have, but he’s got the moves.  Carlin has no problems insisting the man is bought to his apartment – sex is never a bad idea.  But when he catches Lucas’s scent and realizes the man is his fated mate, suddenly getting him to bed is the least of his problems.  Lucas wants to be free, and for the first time in a long time, so does Carlin.

Unfortunately there is more to Lucas than meets the eye.  Martin certainly has no intention of letting them go, and if he has to have Carlin killed to keep Lucas at the Souterrain, then the man has no problems with that either. Suddenly the deal Carlin makes with Martin goes horribly wrong, and Carlin and Lucas realize that the price for freedom might be Carlin’s life, and even then Lucas will not be free.

Warnings: M/M sex, HEA, some violence (they are in a fight club after all).  A growly Alpha who lets his emotions get the best of him, and a hybrid shifter with a wicked imagination.

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Lisa and Thomas Oliver authors of Uncaged, the first book in our new series, Shifter’s Uprising.

Hi Lisa and Thomas, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Hi and thanks for having us here today. I’m Thomas and I got into writing thanks to my Mom, Lisa. I am a builder by trade, but I spend a bit of time thinking about what I’d like to see in a book, and came up with the idea for this series and my Mom, Lisa (feels weird calling her that) helped me get it all together. She already writes m/m shifter books, so this was a good fit for her.

The book is set in an alternative, but modern world where there are shifters and other paranormals.  But they are policed by this group called the Elite who are the guards for the ruling family, the Masons. In this book Carlin and Lucas are in this place called the Souterrain which is like a cross between a prison and a place where the shifters are made to fight to the death for human audiences. Carlin and Lucas are true mates, and Carlin tries to make a deal to fight for their freedom.

Lisa took care of the romance side of things, because, yeah, that’s not really my thing, and I helped her out with the fight scenes and things like that.

[Lisa] Yes, this is a bit different to my other books, but the basics of my stories – shifters finding true love, no cheating and an HEA are all still there as well.  I really hope you like it. The character we’re interviewing today is Carlin – who is one of three Alpha Fighters at the Souterrain.

Character interview with Carlin!

What do you find attractive in a man?

It prefer them to have a pulse… No, actually I prefer bigger men, someone who has a bit of backbone, and if they have an ass you can bounce quarters off then all the better.

The first thing that went through your head when you saw Lucas?

I was really struck by his eyes, they’re silver you know and really amazing to see close up. I thought he looked like he could be someone important and when I caught a whiff of his scent, then yep, my theory was confirmed.  I was blown away.

Do you think you’ll insist the author visits you again?

I know they will, lol. Thomas and Lisa have this whole series thing going on, with us fighting to have changes made to the way shifters are treated when they do something wrong.  Lucas is really important to the whole storyline (you have to read the book to find out why) and as he is my main man, you will be seeing a lot of both of us in future books.

Before you met Lucas, what was your ideal man?

You have to remember that at the Souterrain the men there are all picked for their fighting skills, so if you’re not into muscle and a bit of strength then you’ll be spending your nights alone. I had always thought my mate would be some little soft guy that would want me to protect him and that he would look after me.  I got Lucas instead and couldn’t be happier.

You’re going out for dinner. What’s your favorite food?

I’m an Alpha wolf shifter – I am going to want meat. Doesn’t matter what kind, but make sure it’s not overcooked, but anything – grilled, roasted or stewed, so long as it has meat in it, I’ll eat it.

Carlin knew he was behaving like an idiot pacing up and down the floor of his small apartment, but he couldn’t stop.  How long did it take for one man to have a shower for fucks sake? He’d ordered food for the both of them. Having been a fighter for more than five years, Carlin knew that Lucas would be hungry – hopefully for food and sex.  But if the bloody man didn’t get his skates on then Carlin would eat alone and get straight to dessert when Lucas arrived.

About to call Brian and find out where his errant fuck had gone, Carlin caught the sound of people outside of his door. He threw himself on the couch and picked up a book.  He didn’t want Lucas thinking he was waiting for him or anything.

Brian came in, Lucas a few steps behind him.

“Alpha Fighter Carlin.  This is Lucas, ranked fifth after today.”

Carlin was surprised.  He’d heard the man had moved swiftly up the ranks, but he didn’t realize that Lucas was so close to a shot for an Alpha ranking. In theory, one more fight and he might have to fight Lucas in the ring. For a moment Carlin was tempted to send the man away.  He did have some conscience, even after so many years of being a fighting machine.  He didn’t want to have to kill someone who had been in his bed.

But then Lucas stepped past Brian, and Carlin was caught in angry eyes. Silver eyes.  Something tugged at Carlin’s brain – the eye color had some significance, didn’t it? But then Lucas’s scent hit Carlin’s nose and any rational thought fell straight out of his brain.

“Leave, Brian,” Carlin said, standing up and not breaking his stare with Lucas. He knew his body radiated the power he was famous for, and guessed he might look intimidating, as he heard Brian whisper to Lucas as he scurried out of the door, “I told you not to stare at an Alpha.  You’re dead meat pup.”

“Better dead than a fuck toy,” Lucas snarled – his comment for Brian, but those silver eyes stayed fixed on Carlin.

“I agree,” Carlin said, his voice dropping as he got closer.  Before Lucas could react, he reached his hand around, grabbing Lucas by the nape and pushing the man’s face into his throat. Whatever Lucas was going to say was muffled by Carlin’s skin, although the man was kicking, punching and doing everything he could to get free.

“Sniff, damn you,” Carlin said urgently. “Fucking sniff, and then I’ll let you go.”

Carlin felt Lucas quieten, although his body still stayed rigid in Carlin’s grasp.  Lucas’s deep inhale was the only sound in the room. Carlin knew the moment Lucas had worked out what Carlin was trying to say.

About Lisa & Thomas

Lisa Oliver had been writing non-fiction books for years when visions of half dressed, buff men started invading her dreams.  Unable to resist the lure of her stories, Lisa decided to switch to fiction books, and now stories about her men clamor to get out from under her fingertips.

When Lisa is not writing, she is usually reading with a cup of tea always at hand. Her grown children and grandchildren sometimes try and pry her away from the computer and have found that the best way to do it, is to promise her chocolate.  Lisa will do anything for chocolate.

Lisa loves to hear from her readers and other writers.  You can friend her on Facebook here, or email her directly at yoursintuitively@gmail.com.

Thomas Oliver doesn’t have a lot of time for writing itself although he can talk about his ideas for hours. A construction worker by day, he has a wicked imagination and it was from sharing some of his ideas with Lisa, that the idea for this series was born.

When not working, Thomas is like any other young man. He loves to spend time with friends, his girlfriend and working on his car. His dream is to do up a project car – something mean, with attitude and plenty of power under the hood.

Anyone wanting to contact Thomas can do so through Facebook.

Blurb: In a world where shifters were rampant and humans were clueless as to their existence, the shifters of the land were ruled by the Masons – the royalty of the shifter world. For the most part the Masons were kept isolated from other shifters, preferring their work and commands to be carried out by a force known simply as the “Elite.”

No shifter wanted to come to the attention of the Elite. It usually resulted in death, or at the very least coercion into their illegally run underground cage fights, or sold into prostitution. Once marked by the Elite, very few escaped and even fewer talked about it. There were rumors, thousands of them, of a resistance movement that were fighting both for freedom from oppression and helping those who had come to the Elite’s attention. But nothing seemed to work against the ruling family’s armed forces.

In a harsh world the toughest fighters were sent to the Souterrain, home of the largest underground fighting club for shifters. Here, shifters of all kinds were injected prior to a fight to ensure they didn’t shift in front of the audiences of humans that thronged to one of the few places where you could see two men fight to the death.

It was bloody, barbaric and humans came in droves to wager money on their favorites and to scream for more blood.
And it was in this world, the world of the Souterrain, that Alpha wolf Carlin found Lucas. A hybrid shifter who had lived in a human world. But Carlin didn’t care about who Lucas was, or his weird genetics. Lucas was his true mate and someone worth fighting for.

But love and freedom both come at a price, and for Carlin, it could be his life.

Review: I came across Lisa Oliver’s books some time ago and have always been intrigued by the stories she writes. So as soon as this book came out I had to grab it. I was not disappointed at all. It gives you a world of humans and the paranormal which for me is a top read, and then the fact that their world is ruled by the masons makes it even better. The Elite grab shifters, who have done crimes, helped the resistance or just came across their radar.

They force them to either fight or they are put into the sex business. Most of the fights are to the death and almost all of them are done in their human form. It is a disgusting business that needs to be taken down.

Lucas was a hybrid wolf that lived most of his life in his human form. He had made the mistake of accidentally killing a human in a cage fight, which of course got him caught by the Elite. He was forced to fight and he was damn good at it. He has placed fifth and was working up to Alpha fighter.

The problem was he did not want to do it and when it came down to killing he would do it with a simple neck twist. He never made a show of it. Then he got sighted by an alpha who wanted to bed him. Now this was going to be interesting. There were many secrets hidden in Lucas, and even one that he had not known.

Carlin had seen Lucas during the fight and most definitely afterwards. He wanted this man in his bed. What he got instead was the scent of his mate. What made it more intriguing was the fact that his little mate was not a full wolf. His mate could change his animal shape which might just come in handy in the end. In their world, alpha fighters could when offered fight for their freedom.

Also matings could not be mixed with. That didn’t turn out to be the case for them, because the man behind it wanted Lucas for himself. They had to escape or Carlin would die in a fight soon.

With the help of Carlin’s trainer, they just might make it.
As usual Lisa gives you a world that you can get lost in and let me tell you fantasies are all out hot. I had a blast reading this and can see myself reading it more than once. I liked it so much that it has made my top ten reading favorites.

It can be read as a standalone, but I would rather read them in order. The characters are beautifully written with their emotions for all to see. They will do everything to keep their mates safe and will love their mates forever. This story is perfect for when you are trying to take a break or when you just need the sun to shine for you. It caught my attention from the moment I started reading and kept it all the way to the end. It also gave me everything I could want in a book.

I can honestly tell you that this is going to be one of those types of series. One that I will have to read over and over. I love the way all the feelings they felt was involved in this story. It was the perfect story for me and I loved it. I can’t wait to read the next story. I have noticed that when Lisa puts out a book I am usually there to eat them up. Trust me it will keep you laughing, crying, loving and having fun.
