Wolf, Becoming

Rory Ni Coileain

Volyk learns very young that he has to hide what he is—oboroten’, shape-shifter—after his father is killed and skinned by a hunter, and the pack that takes in his pregnant mother is hostile to his kind. When Volyk is ordered to fight the pack’s beta to prove his fitness, but instead obeys his hormones and tries to mount him, he’s declared an abomination and forced to flee.

Ilya, too, hides a secret. Being young and gay in modern Russia is dangerous, and he knows it. But the truth eventually gets out, and his brothers lure him into the forest to kill him. They’re stopped by Volyk, who hides the mortally wounded Ilya in his den. The only way to heal the human is to turn him into an oboroten’.

Unfortunately, Ilya’s gentle nature is ill suited to the life of a wolf. But when Volyk’s old pack returns, seeking to take away Volyk’s magickal den, Ilya will have to embrace – truly become – the wolf Volyk made him, to save both his mate’s life and his own.

Interview

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Rory Ni Coileain, author of WOLF, BECOMING.

Hi, Rory, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

Do you buy a book because of the cover, the blurb, or something else?

Usually it’s because I’m in the mood for a particular thing, and someone who knows what I like recommends it to me. I will, however, be put off by a cover that looks like it was thrown together in the dark, or a blurb with grammar and spelling errors.

What does ‘romance’ mean to you?

Two or more people discovering they can’t live without one another. Usually something trying to get in the way. And how wonderful life can be once they figure it all out.

What are your current projects?

Working on UNDERTOW (SoulShares #7). And a story for an m/m romance anthology marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. And I have the first three chapters of a Russian bird shapeshifter novel

What is the most difficult part of writing for you?

Writing something that isn’t perfect, and letting it sit there and be not perfect while I get on to something else. It’s HARD….

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise people.

It’s hard to surprise people, too, especially when it comes to me. How about this? – I’ve hugged all the original cast members of Star Trek except William Shatner, James Doohan, and Majel Barrett. Yes, that includes George Takei. Be very jealous. *winks*

Excerpt

And the angel said unto them, be not afraid…

Ilya was not afraid. Enraptured, yes. Entranced. But not afraid. He had been ready for death when he closed his eyes in the wolf’s embrace. Instead, he was whole, and awake, and in the arms of a man more handsome than any angel. Volyk’s long thick hair was the brown and gray of the wolf’s pelt, his cheekbones angular, his lips full. And his eyes were the same beautiful fiery amber as the wolf’s.

Maybe he had only dreamed the wolf. Or maybe he was still dreaming. Surely he had done nothing in his life to earn the gift this moment would be if it were real.

About Rory

Rory Ni Coileain has been writing almost as long as she’s been reading, and reading almost as long as she’s been talking. She majored in creative writing in college, back when Respectable Colleges didn’t offer such a major, so she designed it herself—being careful to ensure that she never had to take a class before nine in the morning or take a Hemingway survey course.

She graduated Phi Beta Kappa at the age of nineteen, sent off her first short story to an anthology being assembled by an author she idolized, received the kind of rejection letter that fuels decades of therapy, and found other things to do for the next thirty years or so, including nightclub singing, working as a volunteer lawyer for Gay Men’s Health Crisis, and studying ballet in New York City, until her stories grabbed her by the shirt collar and announced they were back.

Now she’s a legal editor, a soprano in her church choir and the St. Mark’s Cathedral Choral Society (unless they’re singing Mozart, because she’s decided that Mozart didn’t like second sopranos very much), the mother of a teenaged son and budding film-maker, and amanuensis to a host of Fae, Gille Dubh, and shapeshifters who are all anxious to tell their stories, and some of whom aren’t very good at waiting their turns.

Review:  Wolf, Becoming is a wonderful novella by Rory Ni Coiliean. It is wonderful in the way that it is a dark and gritty view in the world of the paranormal. It is wonderful in the way that it looks at wolf shifters in a very unique and interesting way. It is wonderful in the way that it is purely about survival.

We first meet Volyk, a wolf shifter which are known as oboroten’. When tragedy strikes, a human killed his father, Volyk is left to protect his pregnant mother though he is still a child. That is when they meet a pack of real wolves. However, when it is revealed he is gay, Volyk is rejected by the pack and left to wonder as a lone wolf. I find it difficult to form an appropriate and brief explanation of oboroten’ vs real wolves – this isn’t quite the same as other shape shifter stories. Here, it is more like that the oboroten’ have a human skin beneath their wolf skin, rather than the other way around. The oboroten’ communicate telepathically, something they need to hide from normal wolves, which communicate via body language. This is definitely one of the main reasons that I find the story exciting to read.

Then there is Ilya. We meet him as a child and it is immediately obvious that he is more tender-hearted than his father and brothers. Then years later when it is discovered he is gay, his brothers plot to get rid of him. Ilya is a real sweetheart and the guys have real chemistry. This is where Ilya and Volyk’s worlds clash. Volyk goes to save Ilya and in the end the only way to do so is to turn him into a werewolf.

From there, it is about making sure Ilya can live as a werewolf. Then there is danger from the old pack who do not want Volyk anywhere near their territory. There are some surprises along the way, which in the end lifts some of the darkness from the book. This is, ultimately, a story of survival. Anyone who loves to read about shape shifters should enjoy this darker twist on the genre.
