When Trent Copeland runs into Reed Acton at a Bangkok airport, he thinks the handsome American is too good to be true. Why would someone like Reed be interested in a quiet, introverted gay-romance writer? After all, even an obvious tourist like Trent can see that there is more to Reed’s constant unexplained appearances in his path than meets the eye.
Reed Acton has one mission and one mission only – he needs to get the map that was accidentally slipped into Trent’s bag and keep the mobsters who want the priceless artifact from taking deadly revenge. Trent Copeland is a delicious and damned near irresistible diversion, but Reed can’t afford distractions right now, especially if he wants to keep Trent safe.
From Bangkok’s seediest back alleys to the sacred north, the two men will fight to stay one step ahead of the bad guys and learn that the only treasure worth finding is… each other.
Review:

I had my eyes set on this book even before I found out that I was to review this. I was born in Southeast Asia (not Thailand, though) and I am always on the lookout for books that are set in the area. Living in the United States now, I find myself missing the unique culture that only countries in Southeast Asia provide.
E.M. Lynley’s Rarer than Rubies made me remember the richness of living in that area of the world. The aspect of setting is arguably the most powerful weapon of this book, and the author definitely used her adventures in Thailand to her advantage. It is obvious that the author did her research and remembered her travels well; the setting is rich and detailed and the little nuances of the Thais are captured in minutia. There is the great heat and humidity present in the tropics and there is the crazy traffic of a wildly unorganized population, but there is also great food as well as wonderfully hospitable locals. The author doesn’t sugarcoat the culture – she provides both bad and good aspects of it, and that’s what I truly like about the setting. E.M. Lynley doesn’t set out to show that Thailand is better than the United States; she shows that it’s merely different, a place where people might want to think of when they seek for something outside the familiar. In a way, the reader is Trent Copeland, someone who put into a completely foreign situation, where the reader doesn’t truly know what to expect.
Speaking of Trent, I would also like to point out that I really liked the characters. Trent was quite clumsy without being completely helpless – as one character says towards the end of the book, Trent is quick to think on his feet. He may not have the best foresight, but he is able to act appropriately in the present. He isn’t a damsel-in-distress given a male body, which seems to be a prevalent case in a few M/M books. And to be honest, Reed fascinated me. Reed is a big mystery that the reader uncovers as he/she goes through the book; although many hints are given when we are in Reed’s POV and even though a lot is said during the big reveal scene, there are a few events that just totally threw me off the wall – just because you are given an explanation doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true. It’s safe to say that for Reed.
This book isn’t so much a mystery/suspense book as it is an adventure. We are given quite a few action scenes, but there is an overall feel of adventure to it – to put it simply, it screams Indiana Jones to me rather than James Bond. However, this isn’t really a big disappointment on my part because it was still a fast-paced read. While the action scenes weren’t overly exciting, they weren’t dragging either. My heart still thudded and I still felt nervous for our main characters, and that’s always a plus because you know it’s a good book when you actually care for the well-being of the characters.
I do have a couple of niggles though, but they weren’t big enough that they took away from my enjoyment of the book. First of all, there were a couple of awkward sentences here and there. For example, Trent at one point says, “I am, too, gay!” There’s weird structure to this sentence, and I think there were a couple more that were also a bit stilted and awkward, but there aren’t a lot of it so it isn’t really a prominent mistake. Others might not even notice it; in some ways it’s just me being really particular. There were also a few typos here and there as well as the occasional misplaced comma, but seriously, these things are so minor that they don’t really disrupt the reading experience.
Overall, though, I definitely enjoyed this book. This isn’t just a romantic book – it’s also one that teaches a lot about another culture in a way that doesn’t feel forced. I loved the setting, the characters intrigued me, and there were enough questions left unanswered and these were so tastefully done that the questions actually kept me wanting more instead of frustrating me. Instead of being disappointed by the lack of explanations for a couple of things, I find myself yearning for a sequel. And I do believe there will be more adventures for Reed and Trent! I’ll definitely be watching out for them.

Blurb:  Bernard Stevens, a dedicated clown, accepts a job at Send in the Clowns entertainment agency and learns that their corporate policy is anything but funny. In spite of the stultifying conformity the agency imposes, Bernard and magician Jake Morrison start a relationship as vibrant and unique as the men themselves.

But Jake believes in more than nonconformity—he believes in change, and when he tries to change Bernard’s relationship with his father for the better, Bernard is not amused. Bernard thinks he’s too old to change, but if he doesn’t let Jake work his magic on Bernard’s family life, he’ll find that clowning around alone is no laughing matter.

Review:  At first glance there is nothing unique about this story;  Boy meet boy, boys start dating, boy screws up, boys make-up, boys live happily ever after.  But, I found Ms. Fullan’s voice to be very refreshing.  I found my self actually reading the bits I usually skip.  There was no part of this book, I did not enjoy;  the pacing, the dialogue, the love story…the sex.  I loved it all.

Most importantly, it had a definite beginning, middle and end.  Unlike some shorter works ( this is just over 16,000 words) that leave me unsatisfied.  The Clown and the Magician had a natural ending that spoke of promise without being melodramatic.

This was my first read from this author and I wait with bated breath for the next gem to fall from her literary tree.

Cravings

The slide and push of man on man,

Cock on cock.

Muscles straining and sweat streaking.

Rough stubble and smooth skin.

Delicious dirty and daring.

He licks me,

Tastes and teases

His big hand holds me,

Hard and swollen.

Deep grunts and throaty groans.

He makes fun of my sounds because he

Loves them.

After, wet with our joy,

We lie together and don’t speak.

We touch and kiss,

Delighting in companionable silence.

Blurb:  Haunted by nightmares, Mark learned the hard way to guard his heart. But Gabe may just be the man to bring Mark’s guard down.

After his last long-term relationship ended because of his nightmares, Mark closed his heart to the possibility of

finding love again. He’s certainly never considered Gabe, the orderly who works at Miller’s Retirement Home where his father lives. But there’s more to Gabe than meets the eye, and if Mark is willing to let Gabe in, he might just discover the most important buried treasure of all.
Review: This is one of the sweetest romances I’ve read in a long time.  The lovey dovey starts pretty close to the beginning, but by the time we, as readers, jump in, Mark and Gabe have known each other for almost three years.  So, it’s not technically  “I just met you…now I love you.”  Then they start having weekly coffee dates.  Both wanting more, but leery that their personal secrets will be too much for the other to handle.
I can tell you, as a former nurse, that the author’s descriptions of the retirement home and an Alzheimer’s patient were spot on.  My only complaint is that this book wasn’t longer.

Blurb: Six years ago, Noah Wheeler went to meet his boyfriend, Dante Cerreto, at the airport, and his world ended. Dante was kissing someone else and claimed to be in love. So Noah took his heartbreak—and the sonogram pictures of their surrogate child—and closed the door on the big picture of what he thought his life would be, focusing instead on the piece of the dream he got to keep, being a father.

Now on vacation in Las Vegas, Noah accidentally runs into the Cerreto family, and then the man himself, and learns that not only was he deceived, but Dante was as well. Now Dante wants to make up for lost time, six years’ worth, and to do that he needs Noah, the only man he’s ever loved, and Grace, the daughter he didn’t know he had, to give him a chance at happiness. Dante’s going to have to take a crash course in communication and seduction, though. Noah’s not going to fall in love just to be broken again.
Review:  I choice  this book, because the basic premise intrigued me.  Would a man who’d been gay his whole life suddenly switch team, leave his husband and disappear into the night.  It could happen, but it didn’t seem likely.  Obviously, there was more going on than poor Noah and I knew.    I couldn’t turn pages fast enough to find out how this wicked man could hurt poor, sweet Noah.  And their little girl is a real scene stealer.
There isn’t a lot of sex in this book, but what’s there is hot and loving.  Intellectually, I know that both Noah and Dante were victims, but my inner bitch really wanted Dante to suffer …a little bit.  I enjoyed this book.

Blurb:  Mason Stratton was well known in his circles as a risk taker, with his devil may care attitude. Kenneth Moretti just lost his father and his family counted on him to save the family business. But he has to deal with the cavalier Stratton. Stratton has an idea to remove the family burden. It was a simple plan, Kenneth could work it off… in bed.

Review:  This is my 3rd Alex Berry book and my favorite.  Mason thought he held all the cards, but it wasn’t long into the relationship before he realizes that he is straight up A-Dick-ed.  Kenny has it just as bad.  It’s easier for him to think that he is sacrificing himself for his family, than to admit that Mason is the perfect partner for him.  Neither man is willing to admit that their relationship is deeper than just casual smoking’ hot sex.  My Kindle was in danger the entire read.  Every time one of them hid their feelings or assumed the worst about the other, I just wanted to throw it across the room.  I loved this book and highly recommend.

On a side note:  I wish that I knew more about the author, but he/she is a phantom.  The books are available on Amazon and Smashwords and there is a page up on Goodreads.  But, this is the first writer I’ve found with no Twitter, Facebook or MySpace.    If you now Alex please tell to contact us…we would love to interview this elusive scribe.

Something is wrong with Kevin Marks.  What else could explain the fact the he needs to fantasies about dream lovers… male lovers, to make love to his girlfriend?  A woman who is everything he ever thought he wanted.  She’s smart, successful and beautiful.  Sex is okay, but where are the fireworks.  And it’s not just his love life that sucks.  Professionally, he’s creative juices have all dried up and his successful art gallery just isn’t  fun anymore.

Before he settles into his “perfect” life,  Kevin decides to take an extended vacation to his northern cabin.  Maybe, a little time away will give him some clarity.

Kevin doesn’t even make it to his cabin before he finds himself attracted, first, to a guy working at the local gas station.  His reaction shocks him, but nothing that sends him into any type of sexual identity crisis.  Not like the intense lust that hits him when he meets Teak Hidalgo.  No.  Teak is definitely a of a different color. A horse Kevin wants to ride like a Kentucky Derby jockey.  Kevin has never been with a man, he’s thought it but who hasn’t?    Suddenly the idea of being intimate with the beautiful man is a very good idea.

Review

This is Ms. Church’s first MM release.  All in all, I think she did a pretty good job. But, that is what I would expect from a writer who claims to write “Romance with SASS; Suspense, Angst, Seductive Sizzle.

From the minute Teak and Kevin  meet there is intense sexual chemistry.  These two get hot and heavy fast.  But, their interaction has a realism that is touching.  Teak really wants to get into Kevin’s pants, but he isn’t sneaky or manipulative.  He’s honest with his intentions and allows Kevin to explore his curiosity without pressure.

Loved watching these guys fall in love.  Kevin confused me a few times.  He wanted to be an alpha dog, then would turn around and act like a little *itch ( can I say bitch on this site…).

My only complaint would be that near the end of the book Teak kinda disappeared.  Not physically, but for a he became more of an accessory than a partner.  But, that’s only in the end.  For most of the book they share a respect that is sweet.  But for a while there, Teak  faded into the background while Kevin got his shit together.  I’m not saying Teak should have gone caveman or anything, but I would have respected him more if he directed traffic, instead of catching a ride on Kevin’s emotional roller coaster.

This story is well written with equal parts sweetness and sensuality.  I hope Ms. Church dips into the MM pond again.

I just met you, but I love you…NOT

I guess you could call this my inaugural post of MM Good Book Reviews. I, personally, feel that a good romance is a good romance, regardless of the genders, orientations or number of participants, but in order not to offend any of my more sensitive readers, I’ve elected to segregate gay romance from straight romance. Not sure how long that is going to last, as it goes against my principles, but we’ll see.

Anyway, rather than start off with a review, I decided to begin what I’m calling, Friday Rants. Just little thoughts that pop into my twisted head as I read, write and review.

Today, I would like to address the literary device, and I use that term loosely, of allowing characters to fall in love at first sight. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against instant attraction. But, unless you are writing paranormal fiction that includes mate specific pheromones, PLEASE STOP THROWING LOVE AROUND LIKE CANDY.

I read a novella this week that was so sweet. It was well written and had a nice pace. A CEO was headed to an important meeting when his personal assistant calls in sick. A hottie from the secretarial pool fills in and saves the day. So far, so good. Anyway, our lovers (because, of course, all gay men have a deep seeded need to bend over and take it from every man they’re attracted to)  please insert heavy sarcasm have raw, nasty sex. All is going well, until the secretary pulls out his resume. Mr. CEO freaks out and assume that their little tryst was a ruse to merely further the secretary’s career. He blows up and shows his ass. The secretary is equally offended and stomps off into the night.

Now, I didn’t have any problem with the plot up to this point. There were a few points hiccups that made me pause, but none big enough to stop reading. Anyway, back to our story. So the next morning, the CEO realizes he might have jumped to conclusions. As luck would have it, there is a job within his company that the “secretary” would be perfect for. With NO further contact, the man leaves town for a six week assignment, presumably happy as a clam.

During their time apart, they do not call, email or even text. But, the minute that secretary comes back to town, the CEO is declaring his undying love. WTF? Since meeting these two have spent maybe 12 hours together…total.  And most of that time was spent in bed.  And forgive me for being cynical, but you can’t believe anything a man says when he’s plotting on some ass.  In that time, they may have discovered that they are very physically attracted to one another. Maybe thought…hmmm, I’d really like to get to know this guy better. But, love…come on.

I wish that this was an isolated incident. But, alas, that is not the case. What I’d really like to see is a character that files a restraining order and then runs for the hills after one of these declarations. I want to see someone checking the medicine cabinet for psych meds or googling nutcases online.  Something.  Anything that lets me know he values his personhood to much to fall for that load of blarney.

I didn’t just come up with this theory, I have the same complaint about many het romances. Attraction can be instantaneous, but love takes a bit longer to take root in a person’s soul. If you want me to take your writing seriously, take the time to let me see the players falling in love.  Or if you are going for porn on paper, cool.  Sometimes sex is just sex.  But, stop trying to fit A Love Story into Deep Throat.

Because, I promise you…the author of the piece that I used as an example, next book might be filled with angst, passion, suspense and humor…unless, they send me a free audiobook…I’ll never know. There are too many well written, well thought out books for me to waste my time on that kind of mess.

If, you agree with me, or think that I’m full of crap, leave a comment. I’d love to hear what you think. If nothing else, maybe we could form a support group for readers of bad writing. 😉
