Mending the Rift

by

Chris T. Kat

In a future where man’s ability to reproduce is severely compromised, humanity has adapted to survive. Breeders—male and female—have become precious commodities, and they are strictly guarded and subject to limitations.

Luca Walker is a breeder. Though he knows what’s expected of him as the youngest son of the Northern Confederacy’s Vice President, he’s held out against the pressures of an arranged marriage because he longs to marry for love, not duty. But he’s been promised to Colonel Liam Smith and there’s little he can do about it, no matter that Luca is secretly in love with his bodyguard, Marcus Gray.

When Luca finds himself pregnant with Marcus’s baby, Smith is furious and vows to take what is his—by force, if necessary. Now Luca must fight for his life and the life of his unborn child… as well as the love of Marcus and the happily ever after he’s always dreamed of.

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Chris T. Kat, author of Mending the Rift. Hi Chris, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

Favorite thing about building your own world?

I enjoyed writing Mending the Rift because I could create my own world, which is set after the Third World War. I could show the impact of the war, that it was the source of a strict separation between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. I also loved toying with the fact that not only women but also men could become pregnant. Then there was the fact that breeders, as I call them, are cherished in one part of the world but not in the other. It made for an interesting conflict.

What inspired you to write your first book?

My first book was Seizing It. It was also the first book I’d written with original characters. Before that I wrote a lot of fan fiction in various fandoms. There were people who urged me to write original fiction (my husband was one of them) and eventually I gave in.

Kit came to life because I wanted to show how someone with his background and epilepsy dealt with daily life. Kit doesn’t like his disability, so he often refuses to do the reasonable thing, which can lead him into trouble.

Do you have a specific writing style?

Hmm, now that’s a difficult question. I often use first person narrative as it’s the easiest for me. The writing flows immediately, and I feel close to my character. When I’m connected to my character, everything goes smoothly. I think my characters often talk without regard to societal rules, and there’s definitely some humor and snark in my stories.

Who are some of the authors who influenced you to write?

I’m not sure I’d say there’s an author who influenced me to write. There are definitely authors I admire—the way they craft their stories, the sheer skill of their writing, but I’m not sure they influenced me. I’d actually say that reading a great book intimidates me and leads me to question myself.

The authors I love to read best are Dean Koontz, Josh Lanyon, KJ Charles, and Jordan L. Hawk.

What are some jobs you’ve held? Have any of them impacted your writing? How?

I’ve been a Special Ed teacher my whole life. I’ve worked the odd job in retail during my studies, but teaching has always been my thing. I’m sure that working with children with different difficulties in their development (physical and / or emotional) has impacted my writing. Some characters were based on children I’ve worked with. For example, Sean, Alex’s little disabled brother in the Jeff Woods Mystery series.

Other characters have disabilities as well. For example, Kit has epilepsy (Seizing It), and Joshua has cerebral palsy (Despite the Odds). I always wanted to show disabled people in a realistic light—how the disability impacts their life, but how they should be treated with the same respect as anyone else. I hope that comes through in my writing.

Oh, and there’s definitely no shortage of children in my stories. I know that some people want their books to be kid-free zones, and while I can understand the preference, I love to read about children.

Marcus rappelled off and stepped onto the ground with a crunch of his boots. Pointing at the opening with the askew ladder, he asked, “Don’t tell me you seriously considered climbing down this way.”

Luca shrugged. “I’d have preferred spontaneous levitation, but it didn’t happen.”

He yelped when Marcus put an arm around his torso and lifted him to his feet, as if he weighed nothing. “Hey!”

Marcus silenced him with a glare, and Luca gritted his teeth while Marcus thumped dust off his clothes. “Your father is livid.”

Luca swallowed. He’d expected worried, maybe a bit mad, but livid? His father never got furious at him. Not for long, anyway. Being the baby of the family had its perks. “Why?”

Why? Seriously, Luca, you have to ask why?” Marcus patted Luca’s behind more firmly than was strictly necessary.

Luca shifted, trying to get away from Marcus’s arm. When that didn’t help, he slapped Marcus’s hands away and stepped aside. He couldn’t think when he was so close to Marcus—when the man touched him, he sent shivers up and down his spine. He ignored the glower Marcus directed at him. “Yes, seriously. He knows I don’t want to marry Smith. I don’t want anything to do with all that shit. I want to decide what I’m going to do with my life.”

Marcus shook his head. “Smith is a good man. My brother Kyle worked for him. He said he always treated his people well. If you want I could try to get Kyle on the phone so you can talk to him. That is, if I can get a hold on him. Trust me, you’ll be in good hands.”

“You don’t get it! I don’t want to be in good hands!”

“No?” Marcus raised an eyebrow.

Luca huffed, a small smile forming on his lips. “Well, yes, of course I want to be in good hands. But I want someone to love me, and not just for my ability to become pregnant. I want… you.”

Luca’s heart thundered in his rib cage. There, he’d said it. The ball was in Marcus’s court. Sure, it had only been one night, and Marcus’s reaction afterward hadn’t been promising, but maybe he’d just been scared? Maybe he feared to lose his job? Nonetheless, there was more going on between them, and they both knew it. That one night had just been the last logical step. Luca regretted nothing.

For a moment Marcus seemed startled, and there was a softness in his eyes that was solely reserved for Luca. The softness vanished too quickly for Luca’s liking.

Instead, Luca was greeted with Marcus’s usual, scrutinizing gaze. “You don’t want me, and you better never mention this again. It was a mistake. Now get it out of your head and be a good boy.”

Review: Oh wow this story was so good.

After the horrible events of a third war only a select few men and women were able to bear children. These people were known as breeders. I have to say, I absolutely hated how breeders were not given a choice in who they married.

I thought it was crazy that only people with money and in high positions were allowed to marry breeders and produce as many children as possible or they could let the breeder be with someone else.

Luca, a breeder, and Marcus his bodyguard go through several life altering events throughout this book. The two sides that started the war are as different as night and day. I shuddered about what the Southern Union did to their breeders. I was disgusted that anyone would do those things.

I really liked most of the characters throughout this wonderful story. It had its humorous moments as well as tension, action and drama. Some scenes will leave you holding your breath awaiting the outcome.

This was a well written story that holds your attention from start to finish. Hot sex along with a great plot made this a fantastic read.

Highly recommended.
