My helpers.

Writing is a process. I have a friend who is always asking me do I do this or that to create a story.

Mostly what I do is sit myself in my chair at my desk and type words on a computer monitor. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t have my writing assistants. My assistants are wonderfulawesomespectacular and are absolute task masters! I never get a moment’s reprieve with them!

Meet Rosie (dog) and Murphy (cat).

Rosie’s sort of the ruler around here and as you can see by her picture she’s constantly on me to accomplish more. Rosie came to me twelve years ago on a cold January night. It was only 2 degrees Fahrenheit and there was a lot of snow. She was three and a half weeks old, a little ball of fur. I’m sure she feels keeping an eye on me very demanding, but she’s pretty darn good at it.

Murphy was found in a grocery store parking lot tied up in a pillow case in a rain storm. He always wants to see what I’m doing and make sure I’m doing it correctly. He’s a cat so he probably thinks I must need constant supervision. Even though he didn’t come into my life for about a year after Rosie did, they’re roughly the same age.

Since they were young they’d chase each other around and wrestle. When Rosie was a puppy and still in a crate I’d come home from work to find Murphy sleeping on top of it. He had a bed up there until she no longer needed being crated.

I hope you enjoyed meeting my little furry family. Below is an excerpt featuring the canine who watches over the guys in Quarry. His name is Moose and he was a little fur ball once too.

Excerpt

“You might not remember, or realize, but today is a very special day for me,” Lucas said. He let go of Forge and moved so he stood between him and Simon. “It was exactly five years ago today that Simon and my Jeep had an… unfortunate meeting.”

“You hit me,” Simon insisted in his clipped British accent.

“It was an accident, and you ran into me,” Lucas countered.

“Do you have a point?” Forge asked. “This argument was old about four and a half years ago.”

Lucas grinned. “As a matter of fact, it does. My Jeep died today. Kaput, no hope of resurrection, at least not for an amount of money I’m willing to put into fixing it.”

Simon snorted. “What a pity.”

Lucas arched an eyebrow, but otherwise ignored Simon. “I went to a dealership to look at new Jeeps. While I was there, I was reminded we lost a family member last year. It’s been too quiet in this house, and I had some time to sit in the dealership and think about how to rectify things. Simon came to haggle for me, and we made a decision.”

Forge narrowed his eyes while he glanced at Simon, who wore his best poker face. “He would have paid far too much if it weren’t for me,” Simon informed them.

“It’s true.” Lucas nodded. “We, Simon and I, thought it was time. We had motive, means, and best of all, opportunity.” He held up one finger and added. “Don’t move. No matter what.”

“Lucas what are you—” Forge shifted in his chair.

Simon’s arm shot out, and his fingers clamped around Forge’s forearm. “Lucas specifically said don’t move.”

Huffing a breath, Forge leaned back in his chair. He focused on Simon, then Boggs, but neither of them gave him a clue as to what Lucas was up to. Lucas darted out the door and returned a minute later carrying a large box. Forge heard the scratch of nails against the cardboard and sat straighter in an attempt to see inside the box. Lucas very gently and carefully set it on the floor at Forge’s feet and opened the top. He stood rocking on the balls of his feet, his smile so wide Forge thought his face might crack in two.

Forge leaned forward and looked down, then gasped softly. A brown and black ball of fluff gazed up back up at him. It had fur sticking out at all sorts of odd angles, soft brown eyes, and ears that would eventually stand up. A small, bushy tail brushed back and forth across the bottom of the box.

“Oh, my,” Forge whispered. He reached down and pulled the puppy out, holding him up. “Look at his paws. This guy’s going to be a moose.”

The puppy’s tail pumped faster, and he yipped.

Simon chuckled softly. “I think he likes that name.” He stood and went to the dining room, retrieving the bag he’d carried before and setting it on the floor beside the box. “A new supply of dishes and other puppy supplies. I believe I remembered all the items required.”

“He is a dapper little fella,” Boggs said.

Forge settled the puppy on his lap and petted him. He couldn’t help smiling when the little guy licked his hand, tilted his head, and wagged his tail faster. He had to blink very quickly a few times to hold the moisture building in his eyes at bay.

“The sales crew at the car dealership found a stray, who then proceeded to have a litter of puppies. He”—Lucas motioned to the puppy—“came with the extended warranty I bought. They threw in a bag of food,” he explained and nodded at Simon. “We agreed. It’s time you had a dog again.”

“I….” Forge’s voice cracked. He sighed and wiped his fingers over his eyes. “Guys, thank you.” He scratched the puppy’s ears. “You like the name Moose?” The puppy curled up on Forge’s lap and proceeded to gnaw on his finger. “Ow, hey, no, don’t do that.”

Lucas dug in the bag and pulled out a foil-wrapped paper package, took it out of the foil, and handed it over. Forge fumbled with the paper and extracted a rubber bone, holding it out to the puppy. Moose grabbed it, chewing on one end while holding the other end between his paws.

They all looked at the door to the basement when a chime sounded from the computer. Moose stopped chewing and cocked his head, ears going up. He looked up at Forge for a second, then squawked a high-pitched bark. Holding Moose in one hand, Forge stood up. “Yeah, you got some growing to do before anyone will take that seriously.” Cradling the puppy securely against his chest, he headed toward the basement. “It’s Robert. Wonder what he’s got going on.”

Elizabeth Noble lives by the adage “I can’t not write”. She can’t remember a time when she didn’t make up stories and eventually she learned how to write them down. A part of every day is spent living in worlds she created that are filled with intrigue and espionage.  Using a real love of scifi and urban fantasy highlighted by twisty plots she crafts stories taking place in a slightly altered version of our world.

When she’s not chronicling the adventures of her many characters Elizabeth is a veterinary nurse living in her native Cleveland, Ohio. Review: The gang is on a mission to discover the whereabouts of a vicious criminal. In the process of tracking him down we get a glimpse of the characters met and the circumstances in some cases. The nature of the crimes is devious yet brilliant and the culprit came as no shock to me. However his connection to some in the group did.

I was stunned speechless by how well written, intriguing and thoroughly captivating this addition was. The characters were all engaging, determined and hell-bent on finding the man responsible for so much mayhem. The investigation itself and how Blair, Jonas, Declan and Lucas discovered who was behind the acts was mind blowing.

I loved how well these men worked together and protected one another in the face of danger. Chocked full of suspense, mystery, danger and drama this book packed a punch until the very end. I am highly anticipating more in this entertaining and riveting series as I can’t get enough of this series. 

I highly recommend this story and series for all to read.
