Sacrifices

(A Jeff Woods Mystery 02)

by

Chris T Kat

When he was outed on the local news, Jeff Woods gave up his dream job as a detective to become an on-air radio personality. The sacrifice was worth it to keep Alex and Sean in his life, but Alex lost his job, too. Jeff can tell Alex worries he’s pressuring Jeff too much, first with Sean and now the lack of money, but he has no idea what that will lead Alex to do. Desperate times bring out the stupidity in some people, and when Jeff discovers Alex is in over his head in a situation he can’t handle, he needs all his self-control to stay calm.

Life is not easy with the Church of Virtue still spouting venom wherever they go, homophobes at the police department, a gangster who wants Alex in the worst possible way, and a bed that barely holds one grown man, much less two (and a child), but Jeff is there to stay for good, and he’ll do what it takes to make Alex believe him.

Review: Jeff Woods is back and – can you believe this? – he’s no longer a detective. Guess the Force was not okay with the gay and now he has a show on the radio, which he of course hates. He is also still in a relationship with his whit-blond angel and his brother – those two are a package deal if you don’t remember – but things are not going as well as they should. Trouble in Paradise? You got that right and then some.

So, let me say this up front and get rid with it. I disliked so many parts of this book I wonder how I liked it in the end. First of all, Jeff is no longer a detective. Come on, kill me now and throw me to the pigs. Why? Why be so cruel oh dear author? Realistic? Well yeah, of course it was. I can totally see people’s bigotry ruining other people’s life. Was it well written? Of course it was. Jeff is still Jeff, I still laughed with him and at him. He’s still so very freaking dense I had my head smashing on the desk a number of times. I mean, things are right in front of his nose, waving at Jeff and practically screaming “HELLOOOO” yet he remains oblivious. Which of course had me wonder at times how the heck did he become a detective in first place?
Oh and Parker is still around, thank the stars above because it wouldn’t be half as much fun without him, along with David (we really need a deeper view on this couple) and they gave the feel of normalcy a bit, taking away all this newness that I’m still not sure how to handle with Jeff not being a detective!!! (Think I’m repeating myself a bit too much here? Hmmm)

What had me frustrated and really pissed off though was Alex. Now how should I put this; I disliked Alex with a passion in this book. If that was a real person, and I had him in front of me, I’d have succumbed to violence. As it was he really was awful to read. He’s stupidity – I just can’t call all those things naivety – was mind-numbing. He literally needed a tanning just like Parker suggested, and I know I might sound cruel, but he so deserved some things that happened to him in this book. I only felt sorry for Sean and Jeff there, but Alex? No, no pity for him at all. I just couldn’t feel close to his character at all this time around. One stupid thing after another, lying and deceiving everybody, not thinking, NOT thinking about anyone… He seemed so freaking stupid and I still am not close to that character. I’m mad at him and I don’t know but something has to give in the next installment. Dear author please give him brains and not just looks. Pleaseee!!!!

As for the action part of the story, it keeps up with a mix of close-to-real and a tad-bit-ludicrous. Some things were fine with me, some things were a bit too farfetched, the end result was nice though and somewhat satisfactory. Though to be fair I’d have loved for Blok to have rotten in jail and suffered a long painful sentence right next cell to that other idiot whose name shall remain a mystery until you read the book.

Did I forget something…? Oh yeah, the erotic part and the evolution of Alex and Jeff’s relationship. Well excuse me but do I really need to say how this pair is freaking hot and adorable and sweet all in one? Obviously when the author thought of this couple she was in great inspirational mode, because they still make a drool-worthy imagery in your brain. Even in their hectic life, filled with responsibilities, and sick people hammering their door down, people trying to literally kill them and real life barging in saying “It’s not as easy as you thought it’d be right?”, even then they are sensational. If I’m completely honest though, I can’t wait for the next installment to see how they will handle the new changes, and mostly how will Jeff handle Alex – he seems to be harder to handle than his brother Sean.

Overall I liked this book, even as I hated parts of it (don’t try to make sense of me I can barely make sense of myself). If you are in need of a fun read with a touch of real life and a bit of fiction thrown in there and lovely written romance, then you have a book written up just for you. You’ll definitely love Jeff the Great (I loved that) that’s for sure.
