by

Heath Greenfield

Some people know exactly who they are. As a matter of fact, some people can’t help being who they are even if it doesn’t fit into a conventional world. Other people struggle to figure out what that even means. Dan is the first. Billy is the second. Together, they are exactly what each one needs.

When a horrible roommate forces Dan—a theatre major and the apple of his family’s collective eye—to desperate measures, he turns to Billy to save him. What he doesn’t know is that Billy needs him just as much. Billy, the staunch, upright, gay Republican who has secrets of his own, is bowled over by the bright, forthright Dan, and finds himself inconveniently in love. Dan adores a man of conviction, and he’ll force himself to settle for friendship if he must…but as fate has it, things are about to change…

Being in the internationally successful boy band Right Time had been everything I had ever wanted and more. Well, except for one thing, or should I say one person, but I had long ago acknowledged that I couldn’t have both and to be happy with what I had. That was until he showed up in my life again. And then nothing made sense.

Byron
For years I had pretended I didn’t care. Ignoring my feelings had become second nature to me. That was until my niece begged me to take her to see her favorite boy band Right Time for her birthday and I came face to face with him. In all fairness, she had no idea the can of worms she’d be opening. And in all honesty, neither did I.

Review: This is the first series by Jess that I have read and I enjoy them quite a bit. Although have the time I want to smack the guys around. For such a short story they actually have a lot of depth to them and the characters are fully developed. They are a joy to read.

Law is one-fourth the member of his band and he is totally in the closet. Although he has had the hots for his music teacher for quite a while. However the one time he made a move Byron told him no. Byron knew that Law had to grow before a move could be made.

I am not one for teachers and students getting together, it just comes off creepy to me. However Jess wrote it perfectly and I was so glad to see this. It shows how Bryon does care for Law right from the start. Although it is still creepy, the book doesn’t come off like that at all.

I enjoyed the ending the best of all, although the two year drop doesn’t sit well with me. I want to know about the two years.

I had a blast reading this and look forward to the next story.

Trembling on the floor, pressed beneath a row of seats in a dark theater, college freshman Jason Tripp listens to the terrifying sound of gunshots, as an unknown shooter moves methodically through the theater, randomly murdering men, women, and children attending a student performance of Hamlet. Junior Liam Norcross drapes his massive body on top of Jason, sheltering the younger man from the deathly hail of bullets, risking his life willingly and maybe even eagerly.

As a result of the shared horror, an extraordinary bond forms between the two young men, which causes discomfort for family and friends, as well as for Jason and Liam, themselves. And added to the challenge of two previously “straight” men falling into a same-sex love, are the complications that arise from the abundance of secrets Liam holds with regard to a past family tragedy. The fledgling passion between the men seems bound to fade away into the darkness from which it emerged.

Jason, however, is inexplicably called to rescue his hero in return, by delving into Liam’s shady past and uncovering the mystery that compels the older man to act as the college town’s selfless savior.

The Art of Hero Worship takes the reader on a voyage from the dark and chilling chaos that accompanies a mass shooting to the thrill of an unexpected and sensual romance.

Review: Grein Murray is a new author for me and I have to say that this book hit my top five favorite stories. It was an amazing story that had me caught from the moment I started reading it. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen next, it was perfectly written and kept me well entertained. I do wish that it had been longer because it rocked.

Oliver’s parents were killed in an auto accident a year ago and he was having a hard time with everything. He was working and going to college at the same time so he was always busy it seemed. He was having a hard time making ends meet but he loved what he did. There was this man that had caught his eye, but Oliver was always nervous around him. There was just something about Amondo that called to him.

Amondo took care of the property his father owned and kept his hands clean of the rest of his father’s business. He was attracted to Oliver from the moment he saw him. He was just too damn nervous to ask him out. That was taken out of his hands the moment Oliver overheard Amondo’s father talking business outside the restaurant one night. It placed Oliver in Amondo’s family protection. It seems Amondo’s father has cupid’s job sometimes.

Now, at first when I realized that Amondo’s family were basically mobsters. I wasn’t sure what to expect from it. It definitely was not how it ended up. I had so much fun reading this and can’t wait to see what other stories this author has out. I do have to say that I hope that Randy and Dino get a story because those two would set the sheets on fire.

I definitely loved this book and would recommend it to all. It was a hit with me.

Review: I have only read one or two books by this author and I must say that she has a blare about her stories. Although I am not one for teenagers or even college students in stories because they just don’t seem to come off the way many stories should. I also don’t like characters who are not gay then all of a sudden they are having sexual relations. It just doesn’t come off like what would happen in real life so for me this story was a mixture of many feelings.

Jason is watching a play with his girlfriend when some nut case student starts shooting. Jason was saved by Liam but his girlfriend didn’t make it. They form a bond that strengthens through time but Jason is still having a bit of troubles with it all. He had never had any plans or ideas of being with another guy but Liam is his hero.

Liam has such a horrible past and it leads him into his hero ways. He feels like he is making up for past mistakes by saving Jason. However he also has feelings growing for Jason and he wants to follow through with it all. The problem is he keeps trying to save others and it makes things difficult for them both.

Now with this Liam comes off more as a stalker and kind of creepy in a way. Whereas Jason comes off a bit of a wimp and off. Now the shooting was horrible and Mia wrote it with such a perfect direction that one would feel like they were right there. It was amazing the way it came off. I also loved how the guys dealt with the backlash of negative feelings from friends and family. Other than my problems with it the story was well written and fully developed. It was a good story and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

It caught my attention from the start but unfortunately my attention wavered quite a bit so for me it wasn’t a win for me. I would like to say though that you can tell right off the bat that this author put her heart into her story and I would definitely recommend it.

However it really wasn’t for me.

Joshua Simpson has just finished four years at Purdue University, but that’s not why he’s buzzing with excitement. Josh has always considered himself straight—except for that one time in college—so when he and Alex are living in such close proximity on the road, he’s unsure what these new feelings mean. Is it because they’re spending 24/7 together, or is it something deeper? And does it really matter since Josh has only ever seen Alex with women?

While in Oregon, Josh meets Johnno, a sexy but confusing Aussie surfer. While having an impromptu surfing lesson, Johnno helps Josh realize who he is and what he wants—but Alex’s reaction leaves Josh confused.

Review: I have not really gotten into stories that involve young men, mainly college straight guys. However this one had a lot of humor in it that made it more enjoyable for me. In fact it was probably more than a five on the scale.

Alex and Josh have finished school and now it is off for a bit of fun. So these two think a long year spent on the road sounded good. They are going to drive cross-country in a little purple van and enjoy their freedom. What they had not expected was for feelings to grow between them both.

It seemed to just flow off the pages for me. In fact the way these guys were, it just seemed to come together for them both. I loved the way they reacted to each other and seemed to joke around. These two were perfect for each other and I had a lot of fun reading it.

Not to mention the sex was very hot, sensual and erotic. These two had a lot of passion together. I felt like I was right there with them throughout their travels and finding love with each other. It shows how they discovered and learned together. I enjoyed the way this story just came off so real for me.

I would definitely recommend it.

The Lives of Remy and Michael: Book Two

A CalPac Crew Story

I thought life after high school would be easier. I’d go to California Pacific for a year while I got a handle on my HIV, then after Michael graduated from high school, we’d blast out of here for colleges—and life—on the East Coast. Then I visited Boston and everything changed. I realized I like CalPac. Turns out, Boston didn’t have anything for me beyond one of the biggest regattas in North America.

Life grew more complicated when I got home. I couldn’t find a way to tell Michael that I’d just blown our plan for our lives out of the water. Then my CalPac coaches dropped a bomb on me. Those rowing officials who’d been watching me? They were recruiters for the national team, and my coaches wanted me to try out. They’d even let Lodestone coach me. Now I have to choose, school or crew, CalPac or Michael, and I still haven’t told Michael I can’t transfer. Is there even a place for Michael in my life? Somehow we have to withstand training at the highest levels and having different goals. Will love hold us together… or tear us apart?

I’d like to thank MM Good Book Reviews for hosting my blog tour visit. Yesterday is a period piece, a stand-alone novel, set during the final months of the Pahlavi dynasty. The time and place aren’t conducive to romance, especially between two men, but love and logic aren’t always compatible as Kamran and Grady soon find out.  Can a chance meeting alter one’s destiny?  The answers are revealed within the pages of Yesterday.

The striking cover was designed by multitalented author and cover artist Catt Ford. Aside from the giveaways, which are listed on the Rafflecopter widget, I bring an exclusive excerpt.  I hope you enjoy the sneak peek.

In June of 1978 Grady Ormond, eighteen-year-old son of diplomat Peter Ormond, accompanies his father to his new posting as US Ambassador to Pakistan. Neighboring Iran is on the brink of a civil war, with the monarchy in danger of being overthrown.

Grady will be leaving for New York City in late August to study cinematography and has been warned to keep his homosexual orientation tightly under wraps while on vacation. Repercussions in the predominantly Islamic region could be severe.

On their first night in Karachi, his father hosts a cocktail party to meet the local dignitaries. Grady is introduced to His Highness Prince Kamran Izadi, nephew of the Shah of Iran. Twenty-three-year-old Kamran has recently returned from the UK, where he spent eleven years, first as a student, and then as a financial analyst.

The attraction is immediate—unforeseen and dangerously powerful—but neither one dares to make a move. Odds are so stacked against them it’s futile to even entertain a friendship, but they do, and their world tilts precariously.

With his country in turmoil and Grady about to leave for college, Kamran makes a decision that will change their lives forever.

Review: This is the first time I have read a story by this author so I was not sure what to expect. Usually I avoid them but I have heard good things about her so I knew I had to at least see. Then the second problem came when I realized it was a historical romance. I have never been a fan of them only because they come off so dry and boring. However I actually found myself enjoying this story.

I have read a few things on the Middle East, so I knew what would happen if they were found out. So I pretty much was on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what was going to happen next. This story actually did a pretty good job of keeping it straight, so to speak.

Grady is the son of a diplomat and is about to go to Pakistan with his family. He was warned to never let anyone know that he is gay over there. He is told to keep it quiet because the punishment would be harsh if anyone ever knew. Then Grady meets the Prince at a party held by his father and he is in deep trouble. It would seem Kamran feels the same way and also knows what will happen if it is ever found out.

Kamran is from Iran and knows full well of the dangers if anyone found out that he was gay. He is trying to spend what freedom he has left having a bit of fun. Then he is being forced in to an arranged marriage. To be gay is a death sentence so the two must hide what they feel or they will both die.

Now my main problem was the fact that Grady flirted with Kamran, and I felt like slapping him silly. He definitely comes off as a teenager.
He was warned over and over not to flirt, and he said he understood it. However he kept on doing it, which would have gotten them killed if this had not been a romance story. He was well written as was Kamran. They were fully developed and had a lot of depth to them both. It felt like I was right there with them. Still wanted to smack the shit out of Grady though.

The story was very well written and definitely sparked my interest. It felt like I was right there with them, going to the markets and seeing all those people. Although I think I would rather stay in America that is for sure. Over all I must say that Grady was an idiot throughout the whole story and it definitely was fun to read about him. I still say that historicals will never be a story that I would want to read.

My attention was not as captivated as it should have been but only because it was not my favorite type of story. I like my guys a bit older, a bit wiser and a bit more sex. Also I am one for more modern type of stuff that this story did not have. I have to say that I never really thought 1970s would be historical but it was fun to hear it. I did enjoy this story to a point, but it was not for me.

However it is definitely worth reading and I would recommend it.

Jason Hawkins is about to throw the biggest Hail Mary pass of his career. If he can’t turn NFL recruiters’ heads this year, he’ll lose his shot at the one thing he’s ever been good at. But every quarterback needs a man he can count on down-field. For Jason, that man just might be the Tigers’ new receiver, Derek Griffin.

Four years ago, Derek nearly lost everything after being outed by his teammates. Now he finally has a chance to get it all back as a walk-on for Eastshore College… if he can resist his immediate attraction to the gorgeous and very straight star quarterback.

An instant connection during practice leads to an easy friendship that only grows stronger off the field. Derek is convinced friendship is all it’ll ever be, but a very confusing moment of impulse leaves both of them fumbling for answers about their relationship.

Strong Side is a steamy, standalone gay romance novel with a HEA ending and no cliffhanger.

Review: It rarely happens that a new author’s very first book is such a success, but this was very good! Athletes, and virgins, friendship and a spectacular OUT-FOR-YOU story. Along with some pretty steamy virgin butt sex, make this a fantastic book!

Derek and Jason are both football players for their college football team. But, while Jason is the experienced quarterback, Derek has some serious issues to overcome. A football accident in high school that left him temporarily paralyzed has left Derek with a severe fright of being tackled. Jason offered to help Derek overcome this problem, and so a beautiful friendship is born.

Jason has always been straight, even though his intense focus on his football career didn’t give him much time for dating. The more time he spent around Derek, the more attracted he felt towards Derek. There’s this connection between them that’s very easy for the reader to pick up on, an awareness that turns into a simmering chemistry.

I loved that there was no relationship drama between Derek and Jason. Derek has always been gay, and once Jason accepted the fact that he’s also attracted to Derek, and that he might be bisexual, he was all in. Their relationship was beautiful. And once Derek got over his fear of others finding out about his relationship with Jason, he came out with a bang.

There isn’t much angst, but the lack of it didn’t make this story boring in the least. I really liked that Jason’s father accepted Jason’s sexuality without too many questions asked. Although I expected him to ask some questions, at least the basics. There were quite a few grammatical issues in this book as well. So I think an editor is a good idea for a future book. The bright part is that I was so focused on the story. The grammar didn’t distract me too much.

Also, the epilogue was a bit funky to me. Because it takes place 16 months after the last chapter ended. Derek’s mother was very excited to meet Jason, and yet she patiently waited 16 months to do so? I’m not sure if that was actually a typo and it was supposed to be 6 months… that would make more sense. Aside from the little issues here and there (a little more character development would’ve been nice); this was a very good debut novella.

I’m looking forward to more books in this series!

Review: There are some stories that call to you and some stories that just make you want to run away. For me this story was a mixture of it all. I can’t stand religion added into my love stories. I want hot sex, tender scenes, lots of passion and fire. However this one is based on a new love between two teenage boys so you don’t really get any of that, because it isn’t proper for young boys to have that type of relationship it would seem. This story has a historical theme to it that doesn’t really make it jump out at me also.

However these two boys do pull at your heart strings quite a bit. It also shows what gay youth went through back then. The dangers that they were in if one found out. It has a lot of suspenseful moments, angst, pain and some heart ache, plus it also shows that these two had more support than even they thought. I could not get into this story like I should have but it was an enjoyable story.

Now this author was new to me so I wasn’t really sure what to expect M. LeAnne Phoenix is a new author for me so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I will be the first one to admit that new authors make me leery. I hate not knowing what I am going to get from them. Which is funny, since I love surprises. The characters are fully developed and beautifully written. I enjoyed them quite a bit although I do wish that there were no religious elements added to it. Those made the story go down for me.

David and Jonathan have been best friends for quite some time, however the moment he sees Jonathan being kissed by a girl he loses it. It pushes him to another level with his friend. Things heat up between them, but they have nowhere to turn. It is a time where being gay is not good. David comes off as feminine and most think he is weak and many can’t stand to be around him. Jonathan feels strongly for David and there is so much heat between them that you can’t help but fall in love with them.

The story came off a bit slow to me, so my attention was not caught like it should have been. However with the religious tone, I am afraid my attention was not as captivated as it should have been. It is a well written story and the guys are the best. You can feel the love between the author and her characters.

As I have said before it is a well written book that will captivate your heart with the first page. I enjoyed parts of it however I am afraid the story was not for me. I do look forward to seeing what other stories this author has out.

Blurb: I thought life after high school would be easier.

Review: All that is Solid and Melts into Air is the second book to Christopher Koehler’s The Lives of Remy and Michael Series.

I absolutely loved the first instalment and stepping back and looking at the big picture, this really is the perfect sequel, although as I will outline, it is not without a few flaws. This is an intensely realistic view of a young guy who is just starting college, has a boyfriend still in high school and is looking forward to the future with stars in his eyes, despite having his own fair share of personal troubles and upheavals.

If you haven’t read book 1, Poz, go back and read it. It is essential to understanding the overall plotline of the series.

I’m going to recap the characters using what I wrote in my review of the first book. Quite honestly, since this is a story that is directly continued from the first, the same information is still very relevant to the lives of the main characters.

Remy, real name Jeremy (aka Germy to his brother), has a twin brother, Geoff (aka Goff) along with his mother and father, who is also a psychotherapist. The psychotherapist part is important in terms of Remy’s father because he is so oblivious when it comes to one of his sons (Remy) but more attentive when it comes to the other (Geoff)

. It just shows that Remy comes from a normal, ever so slightly dysfunctional family where parents aren’t some sort of oracle that knows everything. Remy isn’t a jock but he is a champion rower and that being said he is being scouted for college and championship teams. He is gay but no longer in the closet. Book 1 saw Remy deal with contracting HIV, and in this story we continue on to see how he is getting along in terms of therapy, relationships and continuing his rowing career.

Remy’s boyfriend is Michael. He’s still in high school but the two guys have plans together. They are very sweet together – but I don’t want to go into their relationship too much more and spoil the book. Other important and interesting characters include Remy’s team mates, including Robbie and Kevin.

Then there are the coaches, Lodestone and Pendergast. We have something of a villain in Remy’s roommate Brady, who I would have liked a bit more from.

Remy is still the narrator the story. Once again, though, I would have liked to know more POVs from other characters but honestly the style of story teller suits this story really well and makes it feel more humanised rather than just reading about a young gay sportsman.

However, in saying that, this book is a lot of telling by Remy. There is not really a heck of a lot of dialogue and that meant that there were times that the story did drag a lot. I found it particularly slow going for the first third of the book. This is the only reason why I’ve given the book 4/5.

If you read the blurb and it has drawn you in – that’s great because this book does not come with any plot lines that come out of nowhere. This is a very real story of a teen navigating his world through life. It is realistic and sometimes a difficult read but enjoyable from start to finish.

One thing that I like to end on is the title – All that is Solid Melts into Air. I love it; it is rather philosophical and absolutely perfect for the feel of the entire book. It also reminds me of a line from the Japanese anime Fruits Basket: “When the snow melts, what does it become?” The answer is “spring, of course”.

But when all is said and done, I do wonder if Christopher Koehler has anything else in mind for world of the CalPac rowers.

The Art of Hero Worship

by

Mia Kerick

Trembling on the floor, pressed beneath a row of seats in a dark theater, college freshman Jason Tripp listens to the terrifying sound of gunshots, as an unknown shooter moves methodically through the theater, randomly murdering men, women, and children attending a student performance of Hamlet. Junior Liam Norcross drapes his massive body on top of Jason, sheltering the younger man from the deathly hail of bullets, risking his life willingly, and maybe even eagerly.
