A Fashionable Indulgence

(A Society of Gentlemen 01)
by

K.J. Charles

In the first novel of an explosive new series from K. J. Charles, a young gentleman and his elegant mentor fight for love in a world of wealth, power, and manipulation.

When he learns that he could be the heir to an unexpected fortune, Harry Vane rejects his past as a Radical fighting for government reform and sets about wooing his lovely cousin. But his heart is captured instead by the most beautiful, chic man he’s ever met: the dandy tasked with instructing him in the manners and style of the ton. Harry’s new station demands conformity—and yet the one thing he desires is a taste of the wrong pair of lips.

After witnessing firsthand the horrors of Waterloo, Julius Norreys sought refuge behind the luxurious facade of the upper crust. Now he concerns himself exclusively with the cut of his coat and the quality of his boots. And yet his protégé is so unblemished by cynicism that he inspires the first flare of genuine desire Julius has felt in years. He cannot protect Harry from the worst excesses of society. But together they can withstand the high price of passion.

Blurb: London, 1899. The beautiful people are dying…

A malevolent power is attacking London’s bright young things, and the only clue to what’s happening is written in ancient Egyptian script. As ghost-hunter Simon Feximal and his companion Robert Caldwell investigate the mysterious deaths, the arrival in London of a notorious scholar-sorcerer seems to hold the answer to more than one of their problems.

A quiet break in London while en route to Egypt turns dramatic for Dr Percival Endicott Whyborne and his lover Griffin Flaherty when they encounter the hostile ghost-hunter. Feximal clearly suspects the worst of Whyborne – and his flirtatious sidekick seems to think a great deal too well of Griffin…

Jordan L Hawk’s heroes Whyborne and Griffin meet KJ Charles’ occult detectives from the Secret Casebook of Simon Feximal in a mystery that takes all four lovers through the decadent underworld of Victorian London in pursuit of an ancient and deadly evil.

Review: I think this is like my fantasy match-up! Jordan Hawk and K.J. Charles get together to write a short story that combines their captivating, mystery solving, sorcery-filled series!

As Percival Whyborne crosses the Atlantic in search of documents and research on an Egyptian dig that his co-worker Doctor Putnam is working on, he, as usual, stumbles into trouble. In the form of the domineering and scary ghost hunter/sorcerer Simon Feximal.

Simon thinks Whyborne is dangerous and up to no good, and it takes his partner Robert and Griffin to convince him otherwise. While these two couples seem to have a lot in common, both Whyborne and Feximal seem to have a distinct distrust and even rivalry.
Insecure once more, Whyborne isn’t happy with the fast friendship that develops between Robert and Griffin, and this element plays into the plot very nicely. All of us Griffin fans know better, he’s wrapped around Percival’s talented spell casting fingers!

Back to the plot…yes something dark is happening again, and it involves sorcery. Once Feximal figures out it isn’t Whyborne behind the dark deeds, they work together to solve the murders and handle the dark magic and dark sorcerer behind them. Another very Hitchcock-like feel to the whole story.

While the Whyborne and Griffin series is much more developed, the two fit together seamlessly as this is written as a set of journal entries. We see things both from Robert Caldwell and alternately Percival Whyborne’s point of view. Plenty is known about Whyborne if you’ve read the series, and many very tasty details about Simon Feximal are sprinkled in among the plot that leads me to want to know so much more about Caldwell and Feximal!

I love both of these series, and would love to see another joint effort in the future! I love the way they leave the respect/reflect relationship between Whyborne and Feximal. I have the feeling that while they have finally come to respect each other, trust and irritation keep that fire burning hotly. They make a great dynamic alongside their partners Griffin and Robert who get along smashingly well.

Review: Once again, a short story that really delivers a punch! 17 pages must be her lucky number because between the lines Charles delivers a truly odd mystery, dark edgy and complete with the odd couple that is like fire and water, or maybe kerosene and matches!

Once again, Simon Feximal and Robert Caldwell cross paths and solve an odd mystery. The ending is dark and rather similar to the feel of an Alfred Hitchcock story. The heat is there and Robert throws himself at Simon, I swear that man loves to be had and with rough dominance, that Simon needs to give.

I want to read so much more from this Secret Casebook! I hope K.J. Charles keeps writing them!

Another Place in Time

Welcome to another place in time…where one can be swept away into lands and eras long forgotten.

“Office Romance” by Tamara Allen

The post-war economy is at a standstill, much like Foster Wetherly’s life until he’s forced to do battle with irritatingly confident—and competent—fellow ex-doughboy Casey Gladwin for a position in their shrinking department at Manhattan Security Mutual.

“Introducing Mr. Winterbourne” by Joanna Chambers

Lysander Winterbourne appears to lead a charmed life. Handsome, amiable, and a renowned sportsman, he is the darling of London society. As far as Adam Freeman is concerned though, Lysander is just another spoiled aristocrat.

A wealthy mill owner, Adam has no time for the frivolous world of the ton, but when his younger brother becomes engaged to Althea Winterbourne, he reluctantly agrees to be introduced to society–with the Winterbourne clan’s golden boy as his guide.

Resigning himself to a few days of boredom, Adam is surprised to learn that there is much more to Lysander than his perfect surface. But will Adam have the courage to introduce Lysander Winterbourne to his own secret self?

“The Ruin of Gabriel Ashleigh” by KJ Charles

Lord Gabriel Ashleigh is a ruined man. Last night he lost everything at the card tables to his brother’s worst enemy, notorious gambler Francis Webster. Tonight, he’s going back for one more game. Ash thinks he has nothing left to lose. But Francis sets the stakes, and they’re higher than Ash could have imagined…

Two Regency bucks. One game of cards. Everything to play for.

“Unfair in Love and War” by Kaje Harper

Many men lost brothers overseas in the summer of 1944. Warren Burch was one of them. For months he still clung to his big city life in Philadelphia, but finally he’s made the difficult choice to return to his home town. Warren’s polio-stricken leg won’t let him serve, so the least he can do is be there for his mother, when brother Charlie never again will. Arriving home means a whole new life, constrained by the rhythms and prejudices of a small town. Fortunately, it’s made more interesting by the mysterious and attractive young man next door.

“Carousel” by Jordan L. Hawk

When a child goes missing, is it a simple case of a young runaway, or are more sinister forces at work?

“Carousel” is part of the Whyborne & Griffin series and takes place between the events of Stormhaven and Necropolis. It can be read as a standalone.

“Deliverance” by Aleksandr Voinov

This is a re-vamped, re-edited, improved version of “Deliverance”. It’s about William Raven, a templar, who thought he’d escaped his past. (Same character as in The Lion of Kent.)

Along with a foreword written by Alex Beecroft, enjoy these original short stories that make up “Another Place in Time”.

All proceeds from the purchase of this anthology will be donated to AllOut.org in celebration of LGBT History Month, October 2014.

Review: I’ve got to say K.J. Charles is quickly becoming one of my top five favorite authors of the mystery and m/m genre. I can really sink my teeth into her characters, and she illustrates her worlds with words so well that I can feel, smell and nearly tough the settings her stories are part of. And while I’ve read some of her longer novellas, Charles is queen of the short story. The plots feel complete, yet leave me hungry for more, more… more!

I admit I read this series in an odd order, starting with Remnant and then picking up with Caldwell Ghost and then Butterflies. But I decided to read the earlier installments because I was fixated with the character of Simon Feximal. He’s disturbed, obviously haunted by a dark past, inked with powers of sorcery, and his dominant streak….oh hells yeah that’s frickin’ hot!

The interesting twists this ghost haunting takes had been quickly planted and the seeds grew into something wickedly sexy, if not a bit multi-generationally incestual. But hey, kissing cousins and all that.

Robert Caldwell seems to be a perfect foil for Simon Feximal and I can’t wait to read more about this adventurous, mystery solving couple.

Review:  A Torquere Press Halloween short

I loved this quickie read. Robert calls on Simon when he finds his home is haunted. Simon has a fairly unusual way of communicating with the spirit world, but when Robert inadvertently steps out of Simon’s protective circle, they have to take drastic measures. By the end of the story the unhappy ghost, of a man so untimely killed, is finally satisfied.

If you like a short, hot, and spooky read, this is for you.
