Ted MacTaggart’s overbearing father is still trying to control his life, even from the grave. His will insists that, in order to inherit the family company, MAC Superior, Ted must be married by his twenty-fifth birthday — and the marriage has to be “real.” As in the board of MAC has to sign off on it.

Ted could fight the will, but then the handsome, artistic Ryan Costa, an old friend from school days walks back into his life, offering to be his groom-of-convenience. Ted draws up the contracts and Ryan, who has family medical bill problems, agrees gladly to the terms. Ted, emotionally walled off and afraid of his attraction to Ryan, also suggests they should keep their relationship strictly professional. Caring for people has always proven a weakness for him. Now isn’t the time to start.

It’s not long before Ryan’s charm breaks through Ted’s walls, but Ted isn’t his own worst enemy in this case. Other forces are vying for MAC Superior, and even when their relationship is becoming the real deal, its shaky foundations land Ryan and Ted in trouble.

The Rise of Virginie

by

Katey Hawthorne

Stefan Holt left home at nineteen, guitar in hand, determined that couch-surfing would be better than staying with his mother. He finally lands with Megan, an old band-mate, and they decide to resurrect their rock n’ roll dreams to get them out of their opioid-riddled small town. Unfortunately, neither of them is much of a lyricist.

Han Westfall works at the local library, where he lives to rec poetry to the handsome, mysterious guy who brings in his guitar and stays all day. Han writes lines of his own, and when Stefan finally asks to see them, their musical chemistry clicks—and it brings them closer, faster than either of them imagined possible. They name their new band Virginie, ostensibly in honor of their Appalachian roots.

They’ll have to work through band in-fighting, revenge porn, homophobic taunts, family addictions, parental drama, and their own inner demons to make things work, both in love and in music. But if they can make it, maybe they won’t just get out of town. Maybe they’ll rise up and take everyone with them.

Jody Aguirre’s family was kidnapped and tortured by witch hunters, and after a few days of captivity, he’s all that’s left. Using his frosty awakened superpowers, Jody manages to escape—and is rescued from the side of the road by Bren Faulkner’s stretch Town Car. Bren, a hot-thermal awakened with government connections, promises to help find the witch hunters who destroyed Jody’s life.

While navigating his trauma and pain, Jody comes to rely on Bren for more than just food, his house, and his superpowered connections. Brendan is all that reminds Jody what’s left to live for, and a strong advocate for justice vs. vengeance, like the proverbial knight in shining armor he is. As their affection for one another deepens and their attraction becomes impossible to deny, Bren wonders if acting on their feelings would be taking advantage. Jody, meanwhile, struggles to claw his way back to something like normality, knowing that Bren’s part of the solution, not the problem.

But none of it matters if they don’t take down those witch hunters.

Just in time for Halloween! Two novelettes about men with magic—and the occasional demon.

“Blood Magic and the Mini Zombie Apocalypse”

Griff has a bad habit of getting talked into black magic he shouldn’t be using—but this time it’s even worse. His ex is bent on revenge in the form of a mini zombie apocalypse, and the only person who can help Griff is a hottie white magic practitioner named Blythe. The catch: one of Griff’s spells gone wrong left Blythe with a haunted apartment a year ago, and Blythe isn’t over it.

Still, Blythe agrees to work with Griff. As they unravel the ugly blood, sex, and death magic, they also discover surprising things about each other. Hopefully, it’s enough for the ultimate trust they’ll need to defeat a lot of zombies and a crazed witch, or their town will end up covered in corpses.

“Præsidium”

Six years ago, Thackeray agreed to let a demon haunt him in exchange for help hunting other demons. It’s a lonely life, but worth it to be the best demon hunter possible — to save families from the kind of evil that ruined his own childhood.

This Hallowe’en, Thackeray’s dealing with an upstart coven. A powerful, pretty witch named Matt defects to help Thackeray stop their scheme to invite god-knows-what from the other side.

Demons are much easier to fight than the urges Matt’s flirting inspires. But Thackeray can’t hook up with a demon watching over his shoulder… can he?

This Halloween collection has a little something for everybody. With demons, ghosts, psychics, reapers, shifters, and witches… a rainbow of paranormal/supernatural is included.

In Nine-Tenths of the Law by Kiernan Kelly, Oliver discovers he has a haunted sex toy. In Bear Hugs by Laney Cairo, Martin’s boyfriend might be bear shifter and apparently that’s news to him. In Houdini’s Masquerade by Alex Cohen, when Lila meets a succubus, everything changes. In Præsidium by Katey Hawthorne, Thackeray needs helps from a witch who won’t help him until he explains his demon. In Black Cat by Jamie Jennings, when a cat shifter can see ghosts, Micah’s simple life suddenly isn’t. In Haunted Honeymoon by Aaron Michaels, Dylan and Jake seem to be sharing their non-honeymoon with a couple of ghosts.

In And the Tarot Cards Said by Jacey Mills, an insistent ghost shouldn’t be too much to handle for psychic Vassily and his Tarot-reading assistant Ben. In Spirit Wolf by L.J. Hamlin, when Dawson rescues an injured wolf shifter, it’s not just his book that gets worked on while getting back to nature. In Wet Nails by Shira Glassman, it’s not every day a glamorous ’50s actress comes out of a TV but lonely grad student Adina isn’t complaining. In Possessed by Love by Sheri Velarde, a storm trapping them together gives Andrew and Damian the chance they’ve been waiting for. In The Last Night by Kassandra Lea, Eric gets one night a year and he always picks one particular Halloween. In Molly by Mychael Black, Detectives Cameron and Chase discover the murderer plaguing their city is more sinister than they could have known and not entirely human.

Blurb: Rather than spend his first post-college summer on the beach with a hot boy and a margarita, Zane Woodward goes home. While the lectures aimed at getting him to be more respectable like his lawyer father aren’t appreciated, Zane wants to be near his sister and his best friend—both of whom he’s convinced need him.

Enter Geordie Finsen: the Buddhist, blue-haired, stacked house sitter-next-door. Geordie has a penchant for parties, older women who can pay the bills, younger men who can wear him out—and he may or may not be able to control the weather.

While Geordie and his philosophies begin untangling Zane from his own expectations and hang-ups, they bring the two closer and closer. Soon their chemistry flares into a hot and heavy summer romance. But Geordie has hang-ups of his own, including an aversion to getting too attached to anyone or anything.

When things get a little too heavy between him and Zane, his instinct to cut loose and run free is tested, and Zane’s plans for a perfect escape of his own might never get off the ground.

Review: This is part of a series and normally I would say that it needs to be read in order. However the way they are told, they can be read as standalone.

There is quite a bit of different types of feelings flowing in this story. This is the first book that I have read by Katey and I was impressed with the way it flowed together. The characters are well written and very deep. They are also loveable, but there is something off about them.

Zane has finished college getting a degree in a course that he never wanted to take. He always loved music, but his asshat of a father wanted him to continue to going to school. In fact he wanted him to go to law school, he just didn’t want to. He even went home against his better judgment.

However his little sister came first. She had anxiety issues and he felt that he needed to stay with her. His best friend tried to help, even tried to get him to move in with him. Then he met Geordie.

Geordie is the one that comes off a bit weird. He looks like an elf and seems to have control over the weather. He wants Zane and is happy that Zane wants him back. However he is the one that is basically off in the story. He has blue hair, pointed ears, a Buddhist and is watching the house for a lady. Even though the sex between them is hot and wanting, he wants to take off and run. He is scared it seems. He comes off as a Gypsy to me or maybe a hippie. I don’t know.

Even though it is a well written story with some heat to it, this book was definitely not for me. I love paranormals, but not when they don’t pull at me. I even had a hard time concentrating on it. It didn’t catch my attention like it should have so I was disappointed in it. I did like the way they stood up for each other and mixed so well. I did like it but it was missing something for me all the way around.

Blurb: Malory Claremont was born and raised to be the villain in someone else’s story, complete with fire-based superpowers. But then his cousin and former partner-in-crime, Brady, led him into a trap, and he’s been in superpowered lockdown ever since.

When he gets out on parole, he meets Theo McCracken, a cold-superpowered ex-offender. Theo has a modern Hamlet-style past, dangerously pretty eyes, and a hunger for affection that even Mal’s best defensive efforts can’t deny for long.

They’ve paid their debts to society, but society doesn’t care–from blackmailing coworkers to suspicion from the neighbors, it’s hard to catch a fair chance. Pile that on top of their dark family pasts haunting their every step, plus all the leftover abandonment issues and paranoia, and it feels like just a matter of time before they’ll be shoved right back into prison.

After all the people he’s hurt, Mal isn’t sure he deserves a chance to live his own life, to choose his own labels, to be his own man. But maybe having someone like Theo, someone who can love him and be loved, scars and all, could make the whole endless struggle worthwhile.

Review: How on the ever-loving earth did, I miss this series for so damned long? No, really? How come no one told me there was such a series out there and I have to stumble on book five of the series, book five for crying out loud, to get the bulb on, and make me scream with the frustration of not having read and re-read the others so far. Yeah, it was that good. I am in love (again) and get this, book five is about the bad guys, the super-powered villains, and I absolutely adored them. But seriously, get this series in order. It is not fun knowing there are four other books out there and you’ve been oblivious of them, when you literally get swiped off your feet so far in the series. Frustrating as hell.

Now back on this book, as I said there are no good guys here, just the badies and their attempt to go on with their life after being caught. You think it’s easy? Not a freaking chance in Hell, and that’s exactly what makes this story rock. Well, that and the hot, freaking steamy sex. It made my head spin. Yes, it was fascinating.

So let’s see if I can get this right for you. Mal was raised by his creep of a father, practically brainwashed, made to resign in his life as a villain and suffer a slow soul crush from his father’s abuse, until his cousin betrays him and he gets in jail for the awakened. Not a fun place to be, but when was jail fun in the first place.

So now, he’s out on parole after two and a half years and damn if surviving in the outside isn’t harder than being locked in. His personality is not making things easier either since Mal is practically a sociopath, so he can’t understand Theo’s persistence, a fellow parolee who seems Hell bent of being his friend, and more.

So you get into this book and everything you read, see, experience is in the form of Mal’s voice. Trust me when I say this, you will adore Mal’s voice. You will freaking love him and his point of view. I just couldn’t stop reading once I started and was taken so much by surprise I found myself finishing this book in the early morning hours, exhausted, yet screaming in my head because it ended. Malory is a fascinating character. He’s funny without meaning to be, and perhaps that’s why he is so much funny anyway, he is oblivious to his merits, his anger is thrilling and his control even more so. His fuck-you personality is beyond charming but what will probably make you go all aww on him is the way he slowly submits his entire being to Theo. No, by submit I don’t mean anything close to BDSM, though if you really look hard into things there might be sparks of d/s in there somewhere, but this book is nothing of the sort. Damn it, I digress. What I wanted to make clear, as crystal, is that I loved Mal.

As much as I loved Mal, though it was Theo that made this book alive. That damned character is so nerve wrecking, so beautiful, so intense and thrilling, even a little bit scary, that made the entire story come alive. He is the reason that everything dark and ugly turned shiny and gorgeous. Cold to Mal’s hot, Theo is the balance of Mal’s universe, and the missing piece and his grounding point, even as he’s the worse influence one could have. He’s risky and loves to break the rules (and you wondered why I loved him), but he’s also so adorable and agreeable and well, just plain hot. Mal often describes him as porn star material and he definitely is not wrong in that.

So here, we have a story of two criminals trying to make it on the outside, trying to face their bad choices and make do with what they have, even as society is not forgiving and making it even harder than it already is. Here we have two lost souls finding beauty in the middle of ugliness and clutching hard on it, because it’s the only thing they got. Here we have penance, guilt, and self-doubt trying to raise their ugly heads and an amazing attempt to battle these feelings with so very few weapons to do it.

So if you’re a fan of the series, know that this was a great installment, if you’re not and this is your first time (as it was for me) you’re in for a treat, but unlike me, go and start this series from book one. I feel it’s going to be one of the most fun read marathons ever. I definitely plan to do so myself. Strongly recommended!

Blurb:  Econ student Hansen Marks has been hot for Sam MacLeod since they first bonded over their secret superpowers – literally hot, since Hansen can produce fire from thin air. Publisher’s Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: male/male sexual practices.

Review:  This book was… Quite different, frankly. I know these types of books are out there, but this is the first M/M book I’ve read that has a superpower theme. I was a bit apprehensive, of course, just like the way people are when trying out something new. But a lot of things worked here for me – and I’m not even sure if I can list down all the reasons why I liked this book a lot. Because honestly? Some part of me still isn’t sure what I liked so much about this.

What I do know is the fact that Hansen was an incredible narrator. His voice is really wonderful; it’s casual and simple but his personality really pulls through from the pages. He’s dorky, but he doesn’t push any stereotypes. I thought his explanations about equilibrium were pretty fitting – they held my attention, something I can’t really say about game theory and economics in general. Sam was a cool character, too. These two are definitely interesting characters, and from the first page I already rooted for Hansen and Sam to get together. They pretty much do so early in the book, but of course they have their issues to straighten out.

However, there are no huge misunderstandings that force a rift to grow in between these two young men. I liked that a lot. For once, we have protagonists who actually communicate – albeit they do so in their own silly way. Sometimes their conversations come in late, but these guys aren’t fast in making conclusions. They did have their own insecurities, though. These same insecurities made way for a considerate amount of minor angst (which, in turn, actually caused a lump to form in my throat in some scenes), but nothing was overdone. Their chemistry was absolutely great! This is essentially a friends-to-lovers type of story, and there is an easy camaraderie between these two. Their friendship isn’t compromised by their new relationship (although Hansen seems to think so). Also, I found myself not really minding Nessa at all. I liked her, in some ways, and an author who can write an ex-girlfriend whom I don’t find annoying is always a good author.

Like Ami said in her review, I could have benefited more from more world-building. I couldn’t understand terms like “EMF” (which I eventually figured out was electromagnetic field, or something) and “sleeper” – plus we don’t really know why these awakened people have powers, other than the mention of an organ in passing. I also would’ve appreciated a bit more elaboration on what happened with Uncle Neil and on the sleepers who go witch-hunting. What do these witch-hunters do and how bad can their actions be? I am of the understanding, though, that there will be more stories set in the same universe, and hopefully we’ll get more answers by then.

So, overall, I enjoyed this book a lot. It’s quite different from the normal stuff – which sets this apart and makes it memorable. It combines a lot of unusual aspects, like superpowers and game theory, and actually makes it work. I’ll gladly read it again at some point.
