Review:Each book in the Crossroads collection features a different romantic couple. To enjoy the overall story arc and crossover characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order.
Every once in a while there is a story that even though it is funny as hell, it hides a darker side to it. This is one of those stories. Each guy has felt more than just a bit of heartache and pain. They try to work around it, but they don’t really do anything but cover it up. They focus on the past and never understand that their future is depending on the choices you make. Whether it is sex or something harsher, it just covers your scars.
This story like I hinted is full of humor but there is that serious tone underneath and I absolutely thought that this author pulled it all out. The words just flowed off the pages and made it come alive for me. What made it more interesting is remembering how Nick and Bryce had met Rod.
How they came into his store and how Rod made it more fun. They knew that there was something hidden inside of Rod that made him act like he is always happy. Every time he was in pain or wanted to change something he brought up sex. Which is what he did when he first met Landon.
Landon had left home as soon as he was able, never wanting to come back. However with his sister getting married he knew he would have to give it a chance. Especially since his sister was worried about their mother. His father and mother fought like cats and dogs, until his dad walked out never to come back. He felt like relationships were all going to turn out like his families. He felt like he would be abandoned once more.
Whereas Rod felt like he would never be able to be loved. His father had told him he was a disgusting man, and he felt it deep down to the core. Then they realize that they want each other, but it is fun to watch them figure it out. These two are hot.
This story felt real and the characters were friends that I knew. The words mean more in this story than most do. The power you can feel behind them. The story caught my attention and kept it all the way to the end. It was like I was right there with them going through it all. It came off very fluid throughout the whole story. It was fully developed and the descriptions were perfect.
I had a lot fun reading this and look forward to seeing Riley’s next story. The only complain I had was that there was no cover for me to look at, so that brought it down just a bit for me. (*Pixie shrugs* It was an ARC! **note to readers** Please share the cover of Shifting Gears with Lisa so she’ll stop pouting ~Pixie~). I wanted to see the guys and I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t get the chance.

Review: Riley Hart is an auto-buy author for me so I was thrilled when I found out a new release was coming. Rock Solid is another example of Riley’s incredible writing skills and bringing characters to life.
When we meet Trevor he is well beyond his way of fighting an everyday battle of sobriety. Even though he has been clean for over a year it is a struggle to keep it that way. Blake is Trevor’s twin brother and his best friend. It was very hard on Blake watching his brother spiral out of control. It’s still hard for him as he always has that little doubt niggling in his mind that he could fall again. And, THAT, crushes Trevor more than he lets on. To see the fear and disappointment in his brother’s eyes is a constant reminder of his failure.
Trying to get his life back and stay on the straight and narrow path, Trevor joined Blake in the construction business. Together, they formed Rock Solid Construction and while the business is doing well, they still have a way to go before it is stable.
When Trevor learns of a new re-model he talks Blake into allowing him to go alone in order to get the job. Blake is hesitant fearing Trevor will mess it up but he relents giving Trevor the opportunity to succeed.
Battling everyday with his past sins and fearing a relapse is something that never leaves Trevor. It’s killing him knowing how much he put his twin and mom through being absent when partying was his priority. Knowing and seeing the way people talk and look at him when they see him is something he hopes to never face again. Knocking on the homeowner’s door has Trevor’s nerves ramped up in overdrive. When Simon answers the door, let’s just say they didn’t exactly hit it off too well. Simon Malone was/is a heart surgeon who left behind everything he loved and moved to a small town. He was injured in a home robbery gone badly and now he has nerve damage in his hand. Unable to hold the tools to perform his job means he can no longer do his one and only passion…surgery.
Animosity so thick you could cut it with a knife leaves Trevor wanting to punch Simon and Simon thinking a different contractor is needed for the job. However, Trevor is determined not to lose this bid. He has something to prove, not only to himself but his brother, as well.
Simon was surprised to see Trevor come back after he already declined their offer. Even though it wasn’t very professional, he respects Trevor fighting for the chance to prove they are right for the job. Now, Trevor just has to follow through on his promises and show Blake and Simon he can do it.
Simon and Trevor are the complete opposites. On the exterior, they are night and day. Yet Simon can’t help but notice how much alike they really are when they let down the wall they each have built around them. Simon may not understand Trevor’s struggle with alcohol and drugs but he does understand losing yourself and fighting to get your life back.
During the re-model Simon and Trevor begin to form a friendship. They have a connection that continues to build each day giving them a different outlook on what was a dark desolate life.
Maybe it was the biggest mistake he could make.
Maybe he was rushing it.
Maybe Simon would kick him out.
All Trevor knew was he wanted to live. He grabbed the front of Simon’s shirt, pulled the man toward him, and took his mouth. This was what he’d been waiting for.
Trevor and Simon are good together and good for each other. Simon only sees Trevor now and how hard he is trying to turn his life around. He doesn’t judge him on past mistakes like his brother and the rest of the town seem to do. He doesn’t worry if he will relapse because he didn’t see any of those times like his twin. He believes in Trevor which is something he needs desperately.
They each have issues they are trying to get through so it’s easy to see why they have become each other’s salvation. But, unfortunately, they can’t hide out in Simon’s house escaping reality forever. When they are out in public, all eyes upon them, their world they created behind closed doors where they have sex wherever they want, whenever they want, all of a sudden seems a million miles away. Their different lifestyles become more prevalent leaving Trevor uncertain of his place in Simon’s life.
When you read a story from Riley Hart you know you are going to feel strong emotions. She brings all of those emotions to the forefront of her characters and she has a way of pulling the reader in so we are also experiencing the same. I love the way she allows her characters to make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, and get back up. She also writes very supporting secondary characters who are strong and add realism into the storyline.
Just as everything finally seems to be running smooth, Riley throws her characters into a tailspin. You will be holding your breath in anticipation begging someone to throw a lifeline. Everything Trevor has worked for and against just may end up swirling down a toilet bowl, literally.
Through the author’s creativity and her descriptive narrative, she has the ability to keep the focus on what is important. Trevor and Simon are from two different worlds but Riley was able to take their differences and use them to balance their relationship. Even though Trevor feels weak, at times, he really is very strong. Simon sees that in Trevor and with his help and encouragement Trevor starts to believe that maybe he can do this thing called life. Of course, he’s hoping Simon will be by his side allowing their relationship to grow.
Simon only wanted to get his hand fixed and return to the love of his life. Being a surgeon and creating miracles with someone’s heart was all he ever dreamed of. When Simon is faced with possibly losing Trevor, he realizes that maybe being a surgeon is no longer is true love. Admitting it will take courage but he knows Trevor needs that now, more than ever.
If he has any hope of not losing Trevor he needs to man up and tell him how he feels. Dealing with hearts has always been Simon’s expertise. When it comes to dealing with his own, he doesn’t have the first clue what to do.
Riley is an incredible author who has the ability of taking damaged characters and giving them strength and perseverance. If you want to feel passion and love and see resilience at its best, then read Riley Hart. Review: This is one of the best stories I have read in a long time. It was truly beautiful and sweet. It did have its moments but turned out to be a wonderful story. It shows the strengths people have when they are going through such a trying time. When there are two paths to take and the directions the go to. The ability to overcome such pain, anger, and heartache. To turn those negative feelings into what each one of us truly needs and that is love, the feeling of belonging and friendship.
Josiah and Mateo met when Mateo was put into the foster system and joined him in the home where he was. Mateo was an angry young man who had been raised basically in one of the worst New York gangs ever. He had lost his mom to murder, his father to prison and he had been taken away from the gang. A gang he really didn’t want to be with but figured it was what he deserved. Josiah had lost his family to an accident and even with the pain of loss. He was sweet, innocent, and very loving. With Josiah’s help, Mateo wanted more of the life with Josiah. However, his past never really left, so ending it harshly with Josiah he left. Josiah spent the next several years in pain, missing his love. However he did what Mateo had wanted him to, he lived. Then one day Josiah meets Tristan and even though they had their hard times, he wanted a life with this man. However, he still missed Mateo and loved him each day. Tristan had a hard life similar to Mateo, just not with gangs. He was an attorney who sent people to jail and had a mother he loved. He was hard in most ways. However, he was slowly learning to love. When Mateo comes back into Josiah’s life, things get complicated. However, they can make it work. It doesn’t hurt that Josiah’s and Tristan love life is hot and very loving, but then you add in Mateo and the sheets are set on fire.
This story makes me think of what really can happen when people take the wrong path or the right path. That they can destroy their lives or have everything they ever wanted. It is such a tender story that will make you cry at times or want to smack one of them. It comes off so real to me, that I wish they had gone through a different life. To know what they went through, what they gave up protecting the other and what they will get for a reward. I am glad to have had the chance to read this story. It was amazing.

Review: Finally a book with a realistic look and take at what it must take for a man who has never before found himself attracted to a man dealing with the myriad of emotions that comes with redefining yourself when you already thought you were fairly well-defined. The story allows the reader to learn about the characters of Noah and Cooper so that they understand how both men could perhaps move from one reality to another. Both men are scarred by their childhoods and the overwhelming theme of the book is how love, friendship and understanding can help to heal wounds and start new beginnings.
The author makes good use of flashbacks to help the reader understand the nature of Noah and Cooper’s relationship which makes their journey from friendship to lovers easier to understand and highly believable. It’s also realistic in that first comes sex, and then comes emotions. The sex in the book is both erotic and healing; and, while there is a LOT of it, it is not gratuitous, but rather serves to help the men become closer and heal from past hurts. For Cooper, experiencing sex with Noah allows him to realize that he feels more for his friend that the simple love one has for a friend, the sex binds him to the man who will become his partner.
The story follows the men’s friendship, to their sexual encounter, to their break up and then to their eventual understanding that their feelings for each other are not fleeting and that they must work together if their relationship is to succeed. And then when the reader feels that the HEA is now accomplished, a new crisis is thrown into the mix and the two men must now overcome this crisis together in order for them to not just have their HEA, but to build the foundation that will become their lives.
Noah and Cooper are a very believable couple. The movement from their friendship to their relationship builds a climax in the story which pulls the reader in. Both men love each other and the things they do for and with each other clearly demonstrate that. The reader wants them to succeed and even when Cooper struggles, the reader understands why and continues to root for him. Why? Because the reader understands that it is in Cooper admitting his feelings for Noah that he will be able to begin to heal.
The story is very well told and nicely paced and is quite an enjoyable read.
