Blurb: A remote farmhouse in Cornwall seems the perfect place for Ash to settle into his recently altered status. Starting a new life there with Sam—the shifter he can’t stay away from—should be easy this far from London where they faced so much danger. So why does adjusting seem impossible?

Sam has issues of his own. He has to get used to his human form again after living the last eight years as a wolf. It’s hard when human worries weigh so heavily on his shoulders. Life is much more straightforward from a wolf’s perspective, until Ash needs his human support.

Ash’s problem is simple: he’s fearful of shifting fully. How can he believe he won’t hurt Sam when his genes were altered to create a killer? Despite repeated reassurance, his anger and resentment increase. Only one thing is certain: if Ash can’t learn to trust himself soon, he’s in danger of proving himself right.

Review: The Altered 2 is obviously the sequel to Annabelle Jacob’s novella, The Altered. You need to have read book 1, all the explanations relevant to the storyline are dealt with in detail in the first book and the main characters here were also encountered as minor characters.

After some mixed feelings about the first book I was pleasantly and completely blown away by the sequel. This shows a unique world where the UK government have done the unthinkable and introduced chemicals in the water supply that had transformed many people in the last couple decades, many shifters and the more feared seers.

In this installment we follow Sam, a man who chose to predominantly stay in wolf form for almost decade because things seemed simpler, and Ash, who was fully human until recently while he stuck to the side of his best friend (who was MC in the first book). Thankfully this story is less about the explanation and set up of this almost apocalyptic world which means that the plot line was easy to follow and I quickly found myself loving the characters that Ms Jacobs has created here.

The story is sweet and romantic. It is mostly about Sam and Ash needing to heal and come to terms with themselves so that they can fall madly in love, be mates and have the hope for a HEA of some description. I cannot fathom what exactly it was about these two, but they are both magnetic in the way that I fell in love with the characters and cheered for them from the start.

Sam’s back story is both simple and fascinating and really did well to explain why he chose to remain in his wolf form for so long. Ash is going through a major transformation and I found it so easy to connect and understand him through the process.

If you’ve read the first one, this is a must read because the plot for this one was set up in the first book. But also, perhaps more importantly, the sequel was more enjoyable than the first. It feels like the author has settled in the world she has created, so we as readers can also settle into the world.

If you like paranormal/shifter stories, this is definitely one for you.
