The Artist and His Alpha

(Alpha and Omega  03)
by

Lisa Oliver

Caden Wolfe lives his life hiding from the world. As an Omega with a brute of an Alpha looking for him, he can’t afford to take any chances.  He is happy enough with his art, his one good friend Felix and his agent who adores his paintings. It’s a far cry from life on the streets and Caden is determined to keep working hard, and stay out of the spotlight. Staying away from all things wolf is easy enough in the city, until he meets the one man with the potential to blow his cover and his way of life, out of the water.

Sean Black has it all – a brother for pack, a home pack that is still supportive but far enough away not to interfere with his daily life, a good business, and men who clamor for his attention every night of the week. The last thing he wants or needs is a mate, but after a brief meeting with a gorgeous artist, he realizes his life will change, and not necessarily in a good way.

A misunderstanding leads to danger for Caden and Sean has to make a choice.  Can he give his Omega what he needs, or should he make sure he’s protected and then walk away? A rogue Alpha with an agenda of his own, a trap, and trouble from the council are just a few of the things this couple will have to contend with if they are ever to have their HEA.

Lisa Oliver!

Write a dinner scene combining characters of your choice from different books.

First, let me say, I did try. I asked if Caden and Sean would go to dinner with any of the other guys from the other Alpha and Omega series, and I got a profound no. You see, Alpha wolf shifters are extremely protective and as Caden is no social butterfly, Sean put his foot down and sent a rather terse, and negative reply. So I thought about my other books and approached the Cloverleah pack – they are all nice guys and I was sure they could help.  The men from Stockton Wolves sent their regrets – they were on a case, and the guys from Shifter’s Uprising were still in hiding. Kane, the Alpha of Cloverleah pointed out he couldn’t eat with anyone he might have to kill, so he wouldn’t have dinner with anyone from another pack.  What he did suggest, thank goodness because this was getting beyond a joke, was that I share with you a scene from Cloverleah Pack, book 5, Getting Close to the Omega. In that scene Kane has to tell the pack that he is thinking about banishing Dean (their omega) from the pack because the little guy stuck up for his mate. It was not a comfortable dinner.

So here we go:

Shawn had come back just before six, but for the first time since they had mated, he sat at the foot of the table, rather than in his seat next to Kane. He refused to talk to Kane or even look at him, and Kane was devastated inside. So when he did bring up the topic of Dean and Matthew, he wasn’t very polite about it.

“Dean questioned my authority as Alpha this afternoon, after you all left,” he started bluntly. “I am considering banishing him and Matthew from the pack for his insubordination. Your thoughts please.”

Griff, his closest friend and cousin, put down his fork and stared at Kane, an incredulous look on his face. “You have got to be fucking kidding me,” he said. “Since when did you become such an asshole?”

“You can’t banish Dean,” Troy called out, from his seat next to Anton. “He belongs to us, he’s like the little brother we all wished we had.  What did he say that would upset you so much you would actually banish him?”

“I told him he shouldn’t mate with Matthew. He has a lot of issues and I didn’t want to see him hurt,” Kane said, a little unsure of his position, but sticking to it.

“You’ve got no right to do that, Alpha,” Jax said in his gravelly voice. “If the boy’s found his true mate then he should be encouraged, not told he shouldn’t be claimed. A true mate will never hurt his intended. You can’t banish him or his mate, for sticking up for his rights.”

“How could you even think of doing that?” Fuck it all, now Troy was upset and when Troy was upset, Anton glared at him like he would cheerfully take him out where he sat.  The problem was, Kane thought to himself, Anton could do it and then probably sit down and finish his meal.  He started to get edgy and for the first time since he formed the Cloverleah pack, he knew he was in danger of being challenged.

“You had no right to do that, Kane, and you know it,” Griff said. “It was bad enough when you got at Diablo after we had claimed each other, but the thought that you would banish little Dean – a man who makes more money for you than any of the rest of us put together, I might add.  Fuck it, I’m disappointed in you, cousin. Really disappointed.”

“I don’t think anyone here appreciates the danger Dean would be in if he mated Matthew. He could get badly hurt if Matthew won’t accept it when he says no to any sex,” Kane said, trying to claim the higher ground.

“And your response to that is to kick him out of the pack, and leave him to fend for himself, with just Matthew as back up? That doesn’t sound like something you would do, Kane.” Diablo’s voice always sounded like velvety chocolate, but the big cat was not a happy man either.

“He questioned my authority. He yelled at me and said I wasn’t supportive of anyone in my pack getting mates…”

“He’s fucking right,” Griff yelled. “I don’t know what your problem is when we find mates, but instead of being fucking supportive, you turn around and try to make it about you and what you think is the best for the pack. You’ve been wrong every time so far, so what makes this time any different?”

“The Alpha is worried that when Matthew claims Dean, as an Omega, Dean will no longer be able to be influenced by any Alpha power. He will also come into his own powers, ones that have rarely been seen in a pack for decades,” Shawn said quietly from his spot at the end of the table.

“What sort of powers?” Troy asked. Kane noticed he was curious rather than worried. Ha, but he’s just a beta wolf, he thought, he doesn’t understand…

“He will be able to heal with a simple touch of his hand. He will be able to calm the emotions in a room by walking into it. When he speaks, he will bring peace, kindness and understanding to any volatile situation. In times gone past, a mated Omega could stop a full on pack war, simply by their presence. Their influence doesn’t just stop at wolf shifters. He will have the same impact on humans or any other type of paranormal,” Jax said quietly, as though he had lived through such a situation. Not for the first time, Kane wondered just how old Jax was.

“He will also be in high demand by the bigger packs we are linked to. Damien would take him in a heartbeat, as would Arthur, Claude – fuck any pack with a decent Alpha would see the benefits of having an Omega at their side. Matthew could negotiate for a position with virtually any pack anywhere, with Dean by his side,” Shawn said.  “Hell, he could form his own pack because wolves will follow him – all because he is Dean’s true mate.”

“And you want to banish him?”  Griff was looking at Kane like he had turned into a purple alien.

“I’m discussing the situation with you all before I make my decision,” Kane snapped, but inside he was starting to see that yet again he had fucked up big time. He should have spent more time talking to Shawn about what a claimed Omega could do instead of trying to stop Dean from realizing his potential.

“Fine,” said Troy. “Then as a pack we should vote on it. I vote Dean’s mating with Matthew be accepted and encouraged and that he stay with our pack as our Omega.”

“Second it,” everyone at the table, except Kane, agreed.

Josh sat quietly for a moment, and then said, “Respectfully Alpha, I haven’t been here very long. But if you decide to banish Dean then I will ask to be released from this pack and I’ll take Dean and Matthew back to Damien. I know Matthew didn’t want to be part of such a big pack, but I think with what Shawn and Jax have said, that Damien would be the best Alpha to align Dean with, if you don’t want them here.”

“I can take him back to Claude’s,” Anton said quickly. “Claude would love to have him and Matthew both.”

“I could get in touch with Uncle Arthur, he would probably want to be consulted as well,” Griff said. “His pack should be given the chance to have an Omega.”

The men started talking over the top of each other, and Kane could see the discussion was getting heated really quickly.  He yelled out for everyone to stop, but no one was listening to him and through it all he felt Shawn’s impassive gaze on him, watching to see what he could do. Kane stood up and pushed out his Alpha power, but no one except Troy and Josh would pay attention to him.

Realizing he had no choice, Kane looked at Shawn and mouthed, “Help, please.” Without a word, Shawn lifted his hands and a stasis field covered the table, everyone except Kane frozen in time.

Excerpt

from The Artist and His Alpha

“Holy shit, he has a gun. Caden, for fuck’s sake don’t shoot!”

Sean heard Felix yell and he damn near pushed Liam off the fire escape, leaping up the last of the stairs. He could understand how Felix would want to talk quickly, especially if a gun was involved, but he had to see Caden for himself. As he stood on a rickety ledge he was momentarily stunned by the vision in front of him. A huge lit space littered with canvases spoke of hard work, dedication, passion for art and an apparent disregard for mess. And in front of it all stood Caden – locked, loaded and ready for bear.

The young man looked even better than Sean remembered. His slim, pale torso gleamed under the light, his unruly mop of straight blond hair falling just over the top of one eye. All Caden appeared to be wearing was a pair of jeans that hung low on his hips – a truly sexy picture. But it was the confident way Caden held the gun in his hands, and the unflinching glare in his eyes, that touched Sean’s heart. Felix had been right about one thing. Caden was determined to defend his home, and he looked more than capable of doing it. Damn, if that idea didn’t slam Sean in the groin and hang on.

“What are you doing here, Felix?” Caden’s voice held traces of nervousness that wouldn’t be noticed by human ears, but Sean noticed that the hands holding the gun didn’t waver.

“I was worried about you,” Felix called out, stepping closer to the glass, his hands spread to show he was unarmed. “We all were. You wouldn’t answer your door; you weren’t taking my calls. I had to know you were all right. We’re friends, Caden, I thought you trusted me. Now please, let us in. This damn ledge is fucking unsafe and you know I’m scared of heights.”

Caden held his glare for a long minute, and Sean wasn’t sure the young man would ever move. But then he carefully raised his weapon, removed the magazine, which he tucked in his back pocket, and then walked over to rest the gun against the wall.  Only then did he come towards the large panes of glass, releasing a latch, which Sean realized was actually a door latch. What he had mistaken for windows doubled as large sliding doors.

Once all three men were inside of what was a huge space, Caden seemed unsure of himself. “I know we’re friends,” he said to Felix hesitantly – scared, but apparently determined to defend his actions. “I’m not doing anything wrong.” His eyes seemed to catch Sean’s automatically and Sean was shocked to see they were full of fear again. “I’m an adult. This is my place, my territory. I’m not intruding on anyone’s space. I have a right to be here.”

Sean realized in that instant that Caden’s immediate fear had a name – the Black Brothers – and damn, if that didn’t make him feel sick. He and Liam were full-blown Alpha wolves, and his little Omega must have thought that they had a pack, or at least a right to the territory he lived in. No wonder the poor guy had locked himself in and refused to talk to anyone. He was terrified of losing his home and possibly his life.

Felix looked confused. “No one said you didn’t have any right to be here. This is your home, bought and paid for. No one can take it away from you so long as you pay your taxes, and your trust does that for you.”

“Then why did you bring them?” Caden hadn’t stopped looking at Sean, but clearly Liam was included in the ‘them’ comment as well. “They know what I’m talking about. Why are they here, if not to beat me, torture me, rape me and then kick me out of my home? That’s what men like them do. What are they doing here?”

Review: Each book in the Alpha and Omega collection features a different romantic couple. To enjoy the overall story arc and crossover characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order. However, they can be read as a standalone.

There is nothing better than a good paranormal romance with two gorgeous men involved. I have always loved a story that involved an Alpha shifter and an Omega. It is something about the power struggle between them. One always knows that the Alpha is the strongest leader of the pack and the Omega is the one that keeps a pack together. Lisa Oliver’s stories always have a little twist to them that makes them even better. It is not one of those instant love and mate stories.

Caden has been raised in a pack where the Alpha is not only cruel but down right evil. He believes that the Omegas are just slaves. When Caden was eighteen he was to be made the Alpha’s personal sex slave. Well let’s just say he decided that was not what he wanted to do. He ran and his life went for the plus after a time on the streets. Caden is one hell of an artist.

Sean and his brother are Alphas, but Sean doesn’t want to truly lead. His father is one of the best Alphas around. He thinks that Omegas are to be welcomed and loved. So when Sean and his brother seek out an artist who paints wolves, he is shocked to not only find out that Caden is an Omega wolf, but he is his mate. When the jackass Alpha finds out where Caden is, it is up to Sean to keep him safe. Talk about a miscommunication type of couple.

I love this story and can’t wait to read the next book. I also love how Alpha males are so tender with their mates. I had fun with his and would definitely recommend it.

  1. Congrats on your new book. This sounds like another hot entry to Alpha & Omega series. I hope to get started with this one. And I think I’d see myself as a Beta, more than an Alpha or Omega.
