Breakdown
(The Society of Masters 03)
by
Jack L. Pyke
The evidence is there in his hands: the DVD and notepad convincing Jack that Gray is responsible for his kidnapping and torture, tearing Jack and Jan brutally apart. But with Jack trapped in his own mind, lost to blackouts and self-harming, getting away from Gray must take a back seat to getting away from himself.
While locked away in a secret facility run by the Masters’ Circle, a new beast is unearthed from the depths of Jack’s tormented past. Martin only comes out to play when Jack needs to hide, a psychopath as capable of ruining Jack’s life as he is of defending him. Martin is the repository for Jack’s most horrifying memories, protecting him from the bloody tasks Jack can’t handle. Martin’s purpose is to drive everyone Jack fears – or loves – away, before they get the chance to hurt Jack again.
Now Jack hurts more than he ever has before, Martin is back, and Jack has to figure out what Martin knows that Jack forgot, before it’s too late.
Title: Upside Down Series: Inside Out, #2 Author: Andrew Grey Genre: Contemporary Length: Novel (200 pages) Publisher: Dreamspinner Press (August 15th 2014) Heat Level: Moderate Heart: ♥♥♥♥♥ 5 Hearts Reviewer: Tams Blurb: Lowell Cartwright’s life as a mercenary problem solver has taken its toll, and after one more difficult job, he wants out. For help, he turns to Bull, a soldier of fortune turned club owner—not exactly a friend, but the best chance Lowell has. He visits Bull’s club to scope it out and meets Jeremy Hodgson. The twink captures his attention in a big way. Bull tells Lowell to stay away from the club until he decides whether he can help, so Lowell stays in town. When he spots Jeremy passed out on the floor of a convenience store, he goes to Jeremy’s aid.
Lowell piques Jeremy’s interest immediately, pushing all the right buttons. Then, when Jeremy needs help, Lowell’s kindness turns interest into something more.
But trouble comes knocking when Jeremy’s place is bugged. Maybe Lowell’s past is catching up to him, or maybe the danger centers on Jeremy’s roommate Tristan’s mysterious boyfriend. Whatever the source of the problem, the future Lowell and Jeremy hope for doesn’t stand a chance unless they can find a way to protect themselves.
Purchase Link: http://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=5217 Review: Lowell Cartwright, Spook, is a mercenary looking to start over. He reaches out to the only other man he knows of that has gotten out of the business virtually unscathed, Bull. When he arrives at Bull’s bar, he’s busy, but the tall brown-haired twink out on the dance floor catches Lowell’s eye, so he makes a move. But by the end of the night, Jeremy knows exactly who Lowell is and he tries hard not to be attracted to a monster, but the heart wants what the heart can’t have.
More than once Lowell is there to help Jeremy. First when has an insulin issue and passes out at a local convenience store, and again when they learn that Jeremy and Tristan’s apartment has been bugged. Has Lowell been found by the people he’s trying to hide from? Or is there something else going on here with the young group of friends that Bull and Lowell find themselves calling family, find themselves protecting no matter the cost.
Jeremy may be young but he is not naive, he sees something in Lowell that everyone else either can’t or refuses to. He sees love, compassion, tenderness and honesty there. As well, Lowell is attracted to Jeremy’s strength and devotion, no one has backed him up in a very long time, and so having Jeremy believe in him gives Lowell the strength he needs to end this once and for all. It’s not all sunshine and roses though. First Lowell will have to disappear, and some people are making that very hard to do. And then there is the question, will Jeremy still love him, still want to be with him when Lowell tells him every dark and dirty detail of his mercenary past.
Action packed and nonstop, danger around every corner, who can you trust? This story will literally turn you upside down while you converge through each character trying to figure out what will happen next. You will root for Lowell and Jeremy to get at least a little bit of happiness, and scream at your book when it looks like they won’t. There is passion and intimacy between Lowell and Jeremy that jumps right off the pages, it makes them more relatable. I love the mechanics of the friendship between the four “twinks” as Lowell calls them… Zach, Jeremy, Tristan and Kevin.
“It’s like the twink version of Sex and the City!”
And that right there tells me there will be four books in this series, or at least I hope there will be! One for each twink. And then to watch these big, burly, and killing machines become these gooey puddles of love and compassion when they find the other piece of their soul, it’s a thing of beauty. Yes, this is a must read. You must read this series, this book, anything with the name Andrew Grey on it is a must read. That’s a no brainer!
Title: My Big Fat Southern Gay Wedding Series: A Southern Thing, #3 Author: Sara York Genre: New Adult Romance Length: (55,000 words) Publisher: Sara York (April 1 2014) ISBN 9781311899026 Heat Level: Explicit Heart Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥ 5 Hearts Reviewer: Cat Blurb: When he was a kid, Jack Miller thought life would be a certain way, then he figured out he liked boys and not girls, changing the course of his future. Purchase Link: https://www.allromanceebooks.com/product-mybigfatsoutherngaywedding-1444646-149.html Review: This is the third and final book of this story. If you haven’t read the first two, I suggest you do. This series does need to be read in order. It could stand alone but you really wouldn’t get the proper feel of the characters.
Having said that, this is the perfect finale. It begins with more angst and emotion of Jack and Andrew. These two men sure went through all kinds of hell to get to where they are.
Jack tries to hunt down Andrew after his past ordeal, but his family moved leaving no trace. Jack is almost ready to believe that Andrew either is dead or doesn’t want anything else to do with Jack after all they have been through.
Andrew had suffered his own ordeal while Jack was away and thought Jack was dead. Since that is what Jack’s dad told him. He took rides form truckers, sometimes having to give blowjobs for food to survive. He finally gives up and decides to go back Sweet and end it all on Jacks grave.
I know sad isn’t it? The things these two guys go through in high school are horrible, but it makes you stop and think. Bullying isn’t always kids and school. Adults can be even worse. Child abuse can happen in even the best of homes. I loved how Sara dealt with the themes and in this book wrapped the story up in a nice neat package intriguing, package. I did cry quite a few times so I would suggest you keep tissues handy. I would love to see young Billy’s story…hint hint…
If you like awesome series, books dealing with difficult topics, such as child abuse, big families, angst, hot yet loving ManSex, interesting characters, and a satisfying conclusion to an intriguing series this are for you.

When he becomes stranded with very little money, he has no choice but to look for the nearest garage and hope for the best. What he finds is a hunky mechanic with a past, one that just might be useful in freeing Jesse once and for all from his exploitive ex-lover.
Patrick has his own garage and lives the quiet life. He offers to help a young man in peril when his fancy car stalls outside of town. He suspects that he probably won’t ever get paid for his work, but something compels him to help Jesse anyway. And both men have no idea where some grease and a wrench will take them… Purchase Link: http://www.amberquill.com/store/p/1934-Mechanics-Of-Love.aspx Review: This story is part of the Grease Monkey Inc. AmberPax Package. However, it does not come in paperback. This is a story I can get behind. I do wish that it were longer and way more descriptive. It was really cute and made me just smile throughout the whole story.
Jesse had thought that he had fallen in love with his last boyfriend. However, the boyfriend had turned out to be a pimp and he was his first whore. It made me realize what some young men go through when they leave home and don’t really have a way to live. However, he had finally given up and decided to leave. So what does he do, he steals his ex-boyfriends BMW and takes off. Knowing that if he is found more than likely Jonathan will kill him. It breaks down in this really small town that didn’t have a motel. Finding a garage, he begs Patrick to fix his car.
Patrick notices that Jesse needs help, but he isn’t sure what he is running from. He also knows that ten to one he won’t be getting paid for fixing the car. He lets Jesse know that he won’t take sex as payment, that it had to be given with want. He lets Jesse stay with him while they wait for the part but once he realizes what has Jesse running he wants to help him even more. Then they came across a big surprise and Patrick has a way to get Jesse out of the danger permanently. He just wishes that Jesse would choose to stay with Patrick. Patrick had fallen in love.
This is a really cute story that I can see reading more than once. It made me smile most of the time. However, there were bits of the story that had me crying. It makes me sad what some young men have to go through to survive. I would definitely be recommending this story to anyone who wants a short story to read when they need a pick me up. You won’t be disappointed. I wasn’t and I can’t wait to read more by this author.
Blurb: Landon Jennings is not having a good day. He has been kidnapped not once, but twice. Only, the second kidnapper isn’t a sexy male with the prettiest blue eyes Landon has ever seen. Regis has diabolical plans for Landon, and he just might succeed if Kyle doesn’t save him in time.
Kyle was kicking himself for the way he handle the situation with Landon. His mission had been to warn the human of the dangers out there, not kidnap him. After letting the handsome human go, Kyle and Justin get a call. It’s Landon, and he’s in the trunk of Regis’s car.
Kyle must find Landon before Regis auctions the human off. He travels across the country to rescue the human, only to have his heart captured and a blaze of desire burn through him like nothing he’s ever felt before. But trouble hasn’t finished with either man yet. When a myth appears, the RiverWalkers must battle to stop Rupert from destroying the home they’ve built with their mates. Purchase Link: http://www.bookstrand.com/blaze-of-desire Review:This is book five in this amazing series and they need to be read in order. Trust me you definitely want to start with book one otherwise you will kind of get a bit lost.
When Landon goes to the bar, it is not to pick someone up. He just goes there and reads. However, this time he meets a man who just won’t leave him alone. And for once, he is very glad for it. Kyle kidnaps him and of course, he tells Kyle and Justin that he wants to do it on his own. He doesn’t trust a word they say. He was a special kind of mate, one that will save the panther race. This means he can get pregnant. What he had not expected was three days later to get kidnapped by an evil man who is going to sell him to the highest bidder. Now he wishes he had stayed with Kyle.
Kyle rushes out to find his mate and save his sexy butt from Regis’s auctions. There is a lot of danger out there for those mates that can get pregnant. They have dangers coming at them from all directions. He has fallen for his little mate even though his mate is quirky and has an attitude that would make you grimace.
This story is just so cute that you can’t help but read it more than once. It just shows a different sort of evil out there. The Chekota Breeder’s are in demand by many of the panther’s for their ability to save the panther race. They are sold off to men who don’t mind raping them to get what they want. You can’t help but want to grab them and protect them with all you have in you.
I loved this story just as much as the first five books in this series. Lynn always gives you wonderful characters you will love and an amazing world that you can lose yourself in to when times get rough and you just want a place to go and hide.
It is not a really long story but once you read it, you will be caught. That is what it did for me, caught my attention from the start, and kept it all the way to the end. I cannot wait to see what comes next.
Title: Joe Ray’s Story Series: Rough in the Saddle #4 Author: Hennessee Andrews Genre: Contemporary Cowboy Romance Length: Novella, 23,936 words Publisher: Siren Publishing (March 15th 2014) Heat Level: Moderate Heart Rating: ♥♥♥♥ 4 hearts Reviewer: Tams Blurb: [Siren Classic ManLove: Erotic Alternative Cowboy Romance, M/M, food play, HEA]
Joe Ray Mullins can’t escape the sins of his father and is constantly looking over his shoulder. Trouble seems to lurk everywhere he goes. When two men are looking for him at a rodeo, he is leery because his father has recently been paroled from prison, and many are seeking to find him.
Christian Wright didn’t want to be in Kansas City with the owner of the XYZ Ranch, Zander Wesley, scouting for new members to begin with. He liked the event even less when the hot calf roper, Zander, who he has his sights set on, sticks a gun to his head in the restroom. They cut their losses and chalk up the event as nothing more than time wasted.
When they find Joe Ray badly beaten in the parking lot, they miss their flight in order to get him to safety. Who knew the bad boy image Joe Ray projected is nothing more than a ruse?
Purchase Link: http://www.bookstrand.com/joe-rays-story Review: Short, Sexy and Steamy. Do you know what that is, why that is my three favourite colors!!
Joe Ray Mullins catches the eye of Zander Wesley, owner of the XYZ ranch, at a rodeo event. Zander doesn’t want Joe for his bed, mind you. Zander already has TWO men waiting for him back at the ranch. He wants Joe to come to work for him on the ranch where he can be at home and open about his sexuality, participating in their gay rodeo team. But Joe Ray is on the run, hiding from some former associates of his father’s that want something Joe Ray can’t give them. His father’s whereabouts.
Christian Wright works at the ranch with Zan and he accompanies him to try to sell Joe Ray on buying into the ranch, and coming to work with them. It doesn’t go as planned when Joe Ray mistakes Christian and Zan for the stalkers. He pulls a gun on Christian. Zan and Christian are ready to throw in the towel, but as they are leaving the event, they find Joe Ray in the parking lot being beat all the hell. Of course, they step in and take Joe Ray with them back to the ranch where he can be safe, at least for a little while, and heal.
Christian has been attracted to Joe Ray since he pulled a gun on him, pressing his hard tattooed body against him in that bathroom stall. Joe Ray notices and when they are at a rest stop shower, he deliberately stalks around naked in front of Christian. They spend way too much time fighting the attraction, when what they should be doing is pounding each other into oblivion! They figure out the mechanics of it soon enough though. But not everyone at the XYZ ranch is happy to have the son of a cattle thief at their breakfast table. Joe Ray worries that no one will ever be able to see past who his father is to truly see him. But Christian is about to surprise him!
I am in love with this little series. Each installment is a short story for a different couple and is just sexier than the previous book. But Andrews continues to keep the reader up to date with what’s going on at the ranch and in the lives of the men, we’ve meet throughout this series. Andrews writing style is kind of raw and fresh, and while there were a few hiccups along the way, I chalk most of that up to the length of the book.
This is a must read series for M/M and cowboy love fans. Each book could be devoured during your lunch break or as a sexy snack just before bed. Just think of the dreams you’d have! ** I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review through MM Good Book Reviews ** http://www.mmgoodbookreviews.wordpress.com
Title: His Lion Tamer Series: N/A Author: Caitlin Ricci Genre: Contemporary Length: Novella (152 Pages) ISBN: 978-1-62798-375-4 Publisher: Dreamspinner Press (March 26th, 2014) Heat Level: Low Heart Rating: ♥♥♥♥4Hearts Reviewer: Lisa Blurb: Charlie thinks his Friday will be the same as any other working as an animator, until Quinn Fitzgerald and his rescued Asiatic Lion, Aseem, walk into the studio. While the lion is impressive, his handler is the real reason Charlie’s heart skips a beat.
Quinn has devoted years of his life to rescuing big cats, so he can’t turn down the donation the animation company is offering in exchange for using one of his cats as a model.
Charlie isn’t quite as confident as the handsome, charming man his sister teasingly calls Sex God Quinn Fitzgerald. He’s so nervous he can hardly talk to the other man, so he’s shocked when Quinn not only notices him but also invites him to spend the weekend at his big cat sanctuary.
Purchase Link: http://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=4779 Review:This novella is derived from a combination of two novellas previously published by Silver Publishing: Taming the Lion Tamer and Lions in the Candlelight. When I first got this book I thought it would be a paranormal and I was quite surprise to find out that it wasn’t. However once I started reading it and fell in love with these two guys. Quinn walks in with his rescued Asiatic Lion Aseem and Charlie notices him right off the bat.
Quinn has devoted his whole life to rescuing big cats after taking a trip with his now ex-boyfriend. His boyfriend fell in love with a doctor and he fell in love with the big cats. Realizing that he opens a sanctuary for the cats who are in danger, injured, or just no longer wanted. He needed donations like many other companies similar to his. So when an animation company asked to use one of his cats as a model he couldn’t turn it around. What he had not expected was Charlie. He wanted this man more than any other man ever, so afterwards he asked him to come down for the weekend. Surprised Charlie says yes. He says yes to a lot of things.
Charlie couldn’t believe that this sexy man wants him, but he is just a bit scared. His sister calls Quinn, Sex God Quinn Fitzgerald and he thinks she just might be right. I loved this story although it left me feeling a little off about it. However, it is one of the cutest stories I have come across in a while. It is beautifully written with wonderful characters that are both tender and fierce, loving and caring. You will find that you can fall in love with Quinn and Charlie. They just call to you.
I would recommend this story to anyone who loves big cats, cat sanctuaries, two hot and sexy men and the feeling that you can never find too much true love. It is a perfect little story.
Title: Just A Little Bit More Series: Take It like A Man Anthology Author: Mychael Black Genre: BDSM / D/s Length: Short Story (16 pages) Publisher: Torquere Press (January 29th 2014) Heat Level: Explicit Heart Rating: ♥♥2Hearts Reviewer: Thommie Blurb: Dylan Mackenzie has a secret. He lives a double life: that of an attorney…and a submissive. He’s never told anyone about it, not even Max Castille, his best friend of twenty years. Dylan plays at a BDSM club in the neighboring town, where no one knows him beyond his insatiable need to have his body stretched to its limits. He likes the anonymity.
Max Castille hasn’t been in the scene for quite a long time, and the slave auction at a local club is the perfect opportunity for him to step back into the lifestyle. When the slaves line up for the charity auction, though, Max gets the shock of his life.
Purchase Link: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_93&products_id=4118 Review:This is a very short story that was first included in the Anthology Take It Like A Man. its theme is obviously how much and dignified someone can take…
This particular story though failed to achieve its goal for me. Due to its length it had no real place for development thus the focus is on the smut between the characters, Dylan and Max, who apparently have been friends for twenty years, harboring a crush (secretly) for each other and though Dylan knew Max was a Dom he kept his own kinks a secret. Until the day, they run into each other on one of the most famous BDSM clubs in town. To make matters more complicated Dylan has volunteered to auction himself for a charity, an opportunity that Max doesn’t disregard no matter how shocked he is to see his best friend up on that stage.
The opening scene for me was quite good. The lack of info or intense feelings there didn’t drag the story down, as it’s an introduction of Dylan’s kinks with a random Dom. However as the story moved on I expected that years long crush our MCs kept in their hearts to show and it literally failed.
Anyone that has been in a long-term crush will agree with me that emotion can consume you, steal your sanity, and literally burn you from inside out. The longing, the craving, the incredible heartbeat that literally steals your hearing, the heavy breathing as if all oxygen has run out of the building, that all-encompassing desire to crawl into your object of desire’s skin and merge yourself totally and irrevocably with him the moment you get your hands in him… You get my point? Yeah, all that was lacking and the scene between Max and Dylan was flat-out unappealing.
It certainly was not a bad story, but it simply failed to give me what it promised, not to mention that Max’s kink, as a Dom didn’t even make it in the scene despite tantalizing us when it was first mentioned. Thus my low rating for this read.
Surprise! Yep I am back bringing you yet another brilliant book and cool Giveaway, this time its S.E. Jakes and Free Falling that have joined us. S.E. Jakes:
Thanks so much for having me here today, so I can shout about the fact that Free Falling’s getting a re-release with Riptide! I’m so excited about this, you have no idea. For me, this is the book that started the Hell or High Water series (see below for more on that).
Free Falling originally came out in December of 2012—it was the first book I self-published, and I worked with Sarah Frantz as my editor (and she’s now my Riptide editor as well) and the entire experience was simply awesome.
This would also be the second book Prophet inserted himself into (the first was Bound For Keeps). It was then I realized that the man needed his own series or else he would show up in every single book I wrote. But for Free Falling, it certainly cemented the bond between Blue and Prophet. I’ve brought Blue and Mick back in Long Time Gone (Hell or High Water 2) and yes, I’m totally planning a Free Falling sequel, which would happen sometime post Dirty Love (Dirty Deeds 3). Because I can’t get enough of Blue, my favorite thief, and Mick, the man who’ll chase him every single time.
The great thing about moving this book to Riptide is that now all my EE, Ltd. books are in one place AND Free Falling will now be available everywhere in eFormat AND in print!!! The cover looks gorgeous in person. Contest:
Every comment on this blog tour enters you in a drawing to win one of three SIGNED copies of Hell or High Water series: Catch a Ghost and Long Time Gone. Entries close at midnight, Eastern Time, on March 24th, and winners will be announced on March 25th. Contest is valid worldwide.
About Free Falling:
Sometimes falling in love is the most dangerous thing of all.
Blue is a thief who lives for adrenaline and danger. And when he meets Mick, a mercenary, he’s hit with a buzz of attraction like the rush of a high-rise job without a safety rope. But after making plans to get together, Mick leaves him hanging, and Blue vows never again.
A year later, Mick watches helplessly as Blue stumbles into the middle of one of Mick’s jobs. Risking his cover and their lives, Mick saves Blue and cares for him as he recuperates, but neither man has any idea how to handle the intimacy this forces them into.
Once Blue is safe, Mick redoubles his efforts to take down the drug lord responsible—and disappears. Blue goes after him, determined to return the favor and rescue the man he loves, no matter the cost.
This is a revised second edition of the originally self-published title. No substantive changes have been made to the story.
About SE Jakes:
SE Jakes writes m/m romance. She believes in happy endings and fighting for what you want in both fiction and real life.
She lives in New York with her family, and most days, she can be found happily writing (in bed). No really…
Truth be told, the best way to contact her is by email or in blog comments. She spends most of her time writing but she loves to hear from readers!

Blurb: Sometimes falling in love is the most dangerous thing of all…
Blue’s a thief who lives for adrenaline and danger. When he meets Mick, a mercenary and a hitter, he feels an immediate attraction. But Mick reneges on a bet they’ve made, leaving Blue pissed and confused.
When they meet again a year later, Blue’s in terrible danger after having walked into the middle of one of Mick’s jobs. Mick saves him, and although the two men have fallen for one another, they have no idea how to handle that kind of intimacy that’s been forced on them.
But when Mick goes missing on a job, Blue’s the one to go after him, determined to save the man he loves no matter the cost.
Review: Blue is a mastermind thief who has turned the calling into an art form. He’s also an adrenaline junkie. Each one alone is dangerous enough, but when you combine the two and then throw him off his game by throwing love at him as well, it could be deadly. Mick is a MERC and former CIA operative. The big bear of a man is used to being in control and his take charge attitude is one of the things that caught Blue’s attention from the start. When these two meet, sparks definitely fly. But do remember that explosions start from sparks, and this relationship goes way beyond explosive!
Blue and Mick first met a year ago, when Blue found himself on the losing end of a bet that landed him tied to bed waiting on Mick. When Mick never showed up to claim his winnings, Blue refused to admit how hurt he was at the diss. When they meet up again the initial spark quickly becomes a slow burn. When Blue is in danger, Mick risks everything to save him. As a result of the drug now surging through Blue’s system, sort of a super speed Viagra, Mick finally gets Blue the way he’s always wanted him. But it’s not all fun and games for these two, as they’ve never wanted or trusted another person as much as they want to trust each other.
There were a few hiccups along the way with this story, but overall I was fascinated with the world and this black market drug. I could see the ending coming a mile away, but it still remained interesting getting there. The BDSM aspect was a healthy dose but still tactful, and Mick never did anything to Blue that he didn’t welcome, want and enjoy. I wanted more character development as far as their love story went, and at times, the story itself didn’t flow seamlessly. But as a whole, I’m intrigued with these characters as well as Prophet, and I will definitely be reading the other books in this series.
If you like assassin alpha males, that HEA that you have to work for, a bit of action and suspense all tied with a choppy little BDSM bow… then this is a must read for you.

Kenon zeroes in on the bartender at an art exhibition, intending to add him to his long list of conquests, but Wally bolts, initiating a heated game of cat and mouse. Kenon delights in the game until he discovers what Wally is writing. Feeling betrayed, Kenon swears off all entanglements until he reads Wally’s story and discovers true love is sometimes between the pages and not the sheets.

Another day, another drink for those who had dollars. Wally slipped the candied cherry into the Manhattan and handed the glass to the tall brunette leaning against the bar. With barely a nod, the woman slinked away as if on skates, joining one of the clusters of patrons waiting on Kenon Alavi’s arrival. The artist, notorious for being late, probably wouldn’t arrive for another ten minutes at least. Light jazz floated through the air from the ensemble set up in the far corner and spots of colored lights beamed up the walls to the tall ceilings that arched over the studio space. This would make a great setting for a novel, Wally mused. Too bad he didn’t have the plot to go along with it. His creativity had hit an impasse as cliché as the proverbial brick wall.
“Martini. Wet and stirred, no olive, no twist.” The man put his hand on the bar and looked over his shoulder toward the gallery door. “I’m tired of waiting. Don’t care how special Alavi thinks he is, my time’s important too.” He tapped his fingers on the bar. “Annoying bastard. Wouldn’t be here if my wife wasn’t so keen on having him paint her.”
Wally pulled out the glass for the martini, not speaking to the customer. He’d been hired to make drinks, not socialize. The man was just complaining anyway. He wasn’t really expecting a conversation, especially from the bartender. Plus, tonight Wally had to remember all the different highbrow cocktails. He rarely served anything but beer and frozen drinks back at the Cellar Bar. He poured the vermouth into the sloped glass, then stirred the concoction. As long as Mr. Alavi paid his wage, who cared when he actually showed up? His gala, his schedule.
“Told her we could get a portrait done for a lot less but she insists on this guy.” The finger tapping grew more vigorous. “He’s refused her calls for two months now. Arrogant bastard.”
Wally nodded and set the drink in front of the man. Mr. Alavi sounded like a typical snobby artist. Big surprise. “Here you go, sir. Wet and stirred. No olive, no twist.”
“Top shelf?” the man asked, raising an eyebrow. He toyed with the rim of the glass, running his finger around it as if he was checking for chips.
Our holiday this year is a little different from years past, since we’re leaving town this time. The day after Christmas, we head to the gorgeous Hawaiian island of Kauai for eight glorious days. We’ve rented a condo on the northern side of the island, overlooking Hanalei Bay. Bruce and I are looking forward to abundant warmth, sunshine, lots of adventures (zip lining, snorkeling, helicopter tour), and lots of relaxation. However, Christmas Eve will be spent at home with our precious Boston terrier, Lily, and we will have our annual tradition: a viewing of PeeWee’s Playhouse Christmas Special. It’s star-studded with the likes of Grace Jones, KD Lang, Oprah, Cher, the Del Rubio Triplets, and many more.
My husband and I are not religious people. His family is close by, but very large. Mine is several hours away. His children are grown, and I never wanted to have any. My kids are my four dogs. My special boy is my five pound Yorkie, Winston. There is also an eight pound Chihuahua named Gigi. My Grande Dame is a 65 lb lab mix named Shelby. The ‘baby’ is 85 lb. Shepherd/Great Dane mix, Riley. I try not to be one of those pet parents, but occasionally, it’s fun to put a pair of reindeer antlers on their heads and take pictures! Since Hubby has grown children, he now has grandchildren. He has A LOT of grandchildren! We learned quickly that it’s impossible to have Christmas dinner with each part of his family who hosts a meal. At the same time, Hubby took a job in a 24 hour facility. His particular shift is daytime, with weekends and holidays off. He looked around and realized that parents of young children, or with ailing parents, were working on the holidays. We saw no reason why he shouldn’t volunteer to work on these days.
As a writer, I can adjust my schedule to match his, so we can make our own days to celebrate. These days, Hubby works 16-hour days on Christmas and New Year’s Day. This allows two of his coworkers, with very young children or with ailing parents, to have a holiday off. In turn, we select a day on which we visit all of his grandchildren to deliver their gifts. Afterward, he and I go out to a nice dinner, and then we see whichever holiday blockbuster movie is playing that year. This year, we’ll be seeing The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (of course). And occasionally, I humiliate my dogs by making them play dress up. But, they love me anyway.
