Minuet

(Notes from Boston 04)
by

A.M. Leibowitz

When it comes to love, Mack Whitman prefers to limit it to writing songs and poetry. Aromantic, he’s content to have quality friendships and people who sometimes also share his bed. He’s never considered himself the jealous type. But when he sees everyone in his life, from his best friends to his occasional partners, moving toward more settled lives, it leaves him frustrated, disappointed, and worried he’ll be left behind.

Amelia Roberts doesn’t care about the genders of her partners as long as she follows her one rule: Don’t ever fall in love. It’s worked out well for her, since that’s a line she knows she’ll never cross with Mack. He’s as happy as she is to keep things as they are. The only trouble with her philosophy is that she didn’t count on meeting the one person who might change her mind.

Jomari O’Brien’s supportive family made it smooth for him to transition several years ago. Since then, he’s been in and out of love, and other people’s beds, plenty of times, and he has no regrets. Each one is a small part of a larger symphony. Becoming involved with two people at once is a more complicated harmony, but it’s one he’s willing to learn as long as they are.

Their individual melodies become discordant as they struggle to make them fit together. But if all three can learn to play with each other instead of against, they may yet hit all the right notes.

Warnings: There is no graphic description of anything, but there are themes of addiction/recovery/relapse, gender dysphoria, family violence, adultery, and body image.

Review: Adam is charming, sometimes too cocky and likes to use innuendo. But he uses that to hide his insecurities.

AJ is sexy, confident, and has many friends. He devotes his time to work, study and many causes he supports plus his friends. This way he doesn’t have to face his hidden secrets that haunt him and keep him from having a relationship that he craves.

I loved this story. It is chock-full of intriguing characters. Maybe too full. I love a character driven story, but at first, I felt like maybe I picked up a book in a series. There were so many allusions to both Adam and AJ’s past that kind of made me wonder what I had missed.  AJ had so many friends with problems, and it was as if I missed that story as well. Closer to the end we get some of this backstory that fills in most of the blanks.

I love a character that at first is unlikeable and Adam was a bit overbearing in the beginning and soon let his barriers down. I loved his cocky, positive attitude. A lot is going on in the story, so it’s pretty fast paced.  I liked how the story dealt with many social issues such as abuse, date rape, bisexual, and transgender. There is plenty of hot man-sex as well.

If you like a pretty steamy romance, college men, bisexual and transgender characters, a fast paced, character driven story, and of course some hot man-sex, you will like this.

Trevor Davidson has everything going for him. He’s just moved out on his own with three friends, and he’s landed a job as music director at a large Boston church. He has high hopes for marrying his long-term girlfriend and settling into a comfortable, devout lifestyle.

Andre Cole has spent the past few years throwing himself into a dead-end job at a Cape Cod-based call center. When an opportunity to move back to Boston arises, Andre believes it will be the do-over he needs to put his past behind him.

A chance meeting in a club on New Year’s Eve brings Trevor and Andre together for a brief but steamy encounter. Both assuming that’s the end of it, they are unexpectedly thrown back into each other’s lives when Trevor’s church hires Andre for their website design. While Andre is content at first to move on, Trevor’s conflicted feelings bubble over into his songwriting. Before he can stop it, his ode to Andre becomes an inadvertent Christian radio hit.

Unfortunately for Trevor, he isn’t the only one who knows the song’s hidden meaning. Someone has leaked the story and upended Trevor’s life. In order to put the pieces back together, he needs to learn to be honest with his girlfriend, with Andre, and especially with himself.

Review: Overall ♥♥♥♥this was a pretty good book with a wide variety of stories. Some were very unique and intriguing. The stories are centered on Valentines and dates that could have or do go very wrong. There are several genres, and different heat ratings so that there is a little something for everyone that likes FF and MM short reads. I have also included a separate rating and review for each book below.

Viral Valentine by L. M. Perrin
FF Low heat ♥♥♥ 3 Hearts

Sometimes we set out to do things thinking it is cute or funny but do not think about the person involved. I am not a big fan of the funniest video or prank stuff and this story is a good example of why. Ellie thinks she is going to dinner on Valentines even though it’s with a stranger to find herself pranked. Paige one of the pranksters took a liking to Ellie and wanted the prank ended but Todd wouldn’t let up. Will Ellie forgive Paige?

I liked this story and would have liked more. It ended a bit so suddenly.

Date Blind by Geonn Cannon
FF/Low ♥♥♥♥4Hearts
Martha is waiting on a blind date when she finds out that her date Connie was her high school bully. This story took me back to my high school days of being bullied.

I liked how the characters developed through this story. I wanted more.

The Politician and the Pilot by Amber Kinsey
FF/ Explicit ♥♥♥♥4Hearts
Samantha is a politician sent on a punishment assignment by her boss and ex-lover. She finds herself enthralled with the young pilot Katie and after too much tequila in her bed.

This story is smoking hot! Not lot of plot but the sex scenes were actually good.

Bar Tryst by Rachael Orman
FF/ Explicit ♥♥♥3 Hearts
Vanessa is at a bar with her friends on Valentines she goes to the bathroom and Lisa starts talking to her. Later they end up back in the bathroom in hot sex.

This story had no plot and it just didn’t do it for me sex wise like the other. It wasn’t bad it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Quarter Life: Energy Feed by Adrian J. Smith
Ménage FMM/FFM/ Explicit ♥♥♥♥4 Hearts
Faye has been told the statue of the trapped troll actually will come to life and he will be able to give her answers. She hopes he can find her a witch.

This is a dark fantasy or paranormal story that was very intriguing I would love to read more of this. There is hot sex in a MMF and also a FFM with a voyeur.

Property of Cupid by Eva Lefoy
MM/ Explicit ♥♥♥♥♥5Hearts
This was one of my favorite stories in the book. I loved the twist on cupid. I can’t give much away so I’ll just say read this it was awesome! I want more!

Private Dance by A. M. Leibowitz
MM/ Moderate ♥♥♥♥♥5Hearts
Another of my favorites in this book. Alex finds himself babysitting for a friend on Valentines with his relationship in jeopardy. Before Phinn left on his business trip, he said some pretty cruel stuff and though they have talked, it out he still knows there is work to be done. He finds himself on a scavenger hunt with his little charges in tow and a very happy surprise at the end of the hunt.

I loved this it was awesome. I did have some questions and wanted more information such as why was Phinn going away so much and what their jobs etc. were but the story line was great, and the ending even greater! This one made the entire book worth reading!

The Last Mitzvah by Michael DuPuy
?/ No heat ♥♥2Hearts
I never figured this story out so I won’t say much. I couldn’t figure out who the character was at all or why he was at the Bar Mitzvah. I am assuming he was a transsexual form what I gathered but I am not sure. I was confused throughout the entire thing

I’ll say the ending shocked the bejesus out of me!

Blurb: Phin Patterson is an educational consultant dissatisfied with his job and his life. On a mission to complete one last assignment before escaping his unfulfilling career and figure out what he wants, he accepts a commission from Donald Murdock at the New York State Education Department. Suddenly, he finds himself on his way to evaluate a tiny school in New York’s Southern Tier, not far from the town where he grew up. Now his only goal is to get in, do his job, and get out before anyone from his past remembers him.

That turns out to be easier said than done. Dani Sloane, the sharp-witted administrative assistant to the principal, learns the truth about why Phin is really there. With the help of her friends, she sets out to unmask him and force the local board of education to stop the plans that could ruin their school. Discovering that her sometime-lover is an old business associate of Phin’s only complicates both the situation and their relationship.

Meanwhile, Phin, who has committed himself to keeping his emotional distance, can’t resist the charm of the town and its residents—especially the school psychologist, who turns out to be an old friend he hasn’t seen in over twenty years. While Dani works to take him down and save her school, Phin wrestles with learning how to do the right thing, including telling the truth to the man with whom he’s already falling in love.

Review: My feelings on this book are a mixed bag. This book seems like it was written by a disgruntled teacher, frustrated with the entire education system and the government’s dirty hands in it. Teaching to tests, common core, charter schools, it’s all you hear about if you talk to a teacher or are an involved parent.

On one hand, the author is preaching to the choir here, and I sympathize with the subject of this struggle…on the other, this is not what I want to read in my romance books. I want to escape reality and enjoy a fun fling for a while…not debate heady education issues.

This theme is similar to that of the sophisticated corporate raider coming in to buy out a company and sell it off in parts for profit only….than falling in love with the town and its employees. Except the subject of this book is education, the politics and gossip of teachers/administrators…and of course Phin coming back to face his youthful indiscretions.

Lower Education is a long read, it’s not terribly sexy, with the exception of Alex, but he’s got a big chip on his shoulder. I’m thinking a romance novel is not the platform from which one preaches U.S. education system woes. But that’s only my opinion.
