Red River

(Pack 02)
 (Narrated by: Nick J. Russo)

Two Alpha shifters join together to lead their pack and build a family.

Commitment, loyalty, and strength aren’t enough to make Wesley Stone’s birth pack accept an Alpha with a physical imperfection, even if it’s a meaningless mark. Putting the safety of his pack above his own wellbeing, Wesley trades himself for another Alpha and agrees to mate with a stranger in a mysterious, insular pack.

Alphas from Jobe Root’s family have led the Red River pack from the first day shifters walked the earth. Now the time has come for Jobe to fulfill his destiny, but to do that, he needs his mate by his side. Spiritual, easygoing Jobe reveres Mother Nature and trusts in fate, yet he can’t help being nervous about how his mate will react to his new life in Red River, his new life with Jobe.

Two Alphas with contrasting personalities, different upbringings, and divergent beliefs come together for the good of their packs. But to stay together, Wesley and Jobe must see beyond the surface and embrace every facet of themselves and their union.

Review: This is the first book in the Home series.

Detective Sean Hennessey thought he knew what everything was about including Yates. Boy does he get the shock of his life one day when Yates rescues him and shows all is not as it seems.

I really liked this story but felt at times there was too much detail or interactions with others where there was no need for it. Yet at other times there was a need for more when there was none. For example: why did Angleton just stop the hit? There were more unanswered questions but maybe they will be answered sometime in the series.

I really liked both Sean and Yanas. Both are level-headed with jobs to do protecting the innocent and taking down the guilty. These two men worked well together, once it came to light that Yanas was a good guy and not the other way around.

Great read.

Review:  Caleb Lakes and Andrew Thompson became best friends when they were barely teenagers, spending summers together at Andrew’s family’s vacation home. Over the years they developed a bond based on friendship and trust.

As the years go by there is one constant in each man’s life, each other. They seriously re-define the term ‘friends with benefits’ and are a rock for each other through jobs, moves, break-ups and family drama. And then one look at a New Year’s party changes just one thing, their commitment to each other.

I first listened to this audio book about two years ago, the version that was narrated by Paul Morey. While the narration for this book wasn’t bad, it wasn’t Paul Morey, so I had a hard time giving Andrew Collins a chance. Once I let my perception shift, I was able to enjoy Collins narration. He does a good job with changes in tone and inflections from one character to another, and he really conveyed the emotions of the characters well.

The story is told almost like reading from a journal of Drew and Caleb’s lives. Spanning over more than a decade, the reader is taken on a journey through summer vacations, college, emotionally absent parents, boyfriends, break-ups and much, much more. The two of them continue to live their separate lives, but they always have time for each other.

I think that Drew probably realized he wanted more from his relationship with Caleb before Caleb did, and that was fed into the story through the tattoos and piercings Drew got every time another guy bit the dust, because he couldn’t compare to Caleb. The passion and angst were palpable, but rarely was there awkwardness.

In fact, when things did become awkward was when they finally figured out that the reason neither of them were lucky in love, was because their heart had been given away long ago.

What I enjoy about this series is that there is a connection between the books and characters, but not in a way that they must all be read or read in order. The story is sexy, emotional, occasionally intense but light-hearted when it needs to be.

Definitely worth your time in my opinion.

Review: Eli Block has known who he is and who he wants since he was eleven years old. Six years later that person is not only back in his life, but in his living room. Too bad Seth doesn’t even remember young Eli. Not one to give up when he sets his mind to it, Eli pulls out all the stops in an effort to make Seth notice him.

Eventually Eli takes a step back and goes through the motions of living his life. He graduates, goes to college and gets his degree in Music and Teaching, has a series of boyfriends, but nothing or no one every truly replaces the longing he holds for Seth.

Seth Cohen has always kept Eli at arm’s length, always tried to convince himself that he is not gay. When Eli extends an olive branch, asking to be friends, Seth graciously accepts and the two become best friends. They talk about everything, and when the time comes, Eli helps Seth pick out his home.

As the years pass and Seth stands on the sideline watching Eli grow, make mistakes and try to learn from them, he also watches Eli become a man. A man who Seth is starting to think he wants to be more than just friends with.

I really adored Eli Block. He was tenacious, loyal and unwavering in his love for Seth. It took Seth a while to get on board, and early on I could completely understand why. Seth wasn’t in a place to openly admit or accept being attracted to another man, and there was the age difference.

But once Seth’s feelings started to change, it annoyed me that he went out of his way not to talk to Eli about it. I loved the chapter headers in this book, the comic relief with the various weddings and the shenanigans that people got up to. I think the fish graveyard reception was perhaps my favorite.

This is the first book narrated by Alexander Collins I’ve listened to and I wasn’t really impressed. At times I couldn’t tell who was talking, Seth or Eli, he chose such similar tones for the two main characters and that was confusing and frustrating. He seemed to put more effort into the secondary characters than Seth and Eli. I won’t say I wouldn’t listen to another book he voices, but I don’t think I’ll go out of my way to grab something of his either.

The story itself was pretty good, as I said, the sort of angst aspect with Seth figuring out his sexuality and keeping Eli in the dark bothered me, but overall I thought the writing and concept were great… the narration, not so much.

Review: This story is part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone. Seth is about to start his new job as associate Rabbi when he meets his boss’s son Eli, Seth is blown away by the blatant flirting of the younger man and quickly shuts him down. Eli has had a crush on Seth for years and starts a campaign to make Seth his but he soon realizes that he would rather have Seth as a friend than drive him away with his blatant sexual come-on’s and a lasting friendship forms. Seth tries to ignore his attraction to Eli but finally has to face what he feels, but can he give up a future that could be for the future that Eli offers.

This is the last story in the Home series and we bid a fond farewell to the guys of Emile City with this brilliant story of Eli and Seth. Within the first ten pages of this book, I was already chortling and I realized this was going to be a cracker of a book and that Eli and Seth were going to leave a lasting impression. Eli is only eighteen when he makes it clear that he has set his sights on Seth, being knocked back (repeatedly) takes time to sink in and he finally settles on friendship but as time goes on and his feelings mature the childhood crush develops into full-blown love, but he won’t risk his cherished friendship no matter how much he now loves Seth. Seth struggles with his feelings for Eli and has to do some serious soul-searching, it is a long time coming, but just as he decides to start his own campaign for Eli, a secret is revealed that shocks Eli to the core.

I adored this story, watching as Eli grows into an incredible man who cultivates his friendships with care and holds on to what is most important to him by holding back on his feelings was incredible, Eli is an astonishing character who develops wonderfully throughout the book. Seth is a wonderful character who is sure of who he is… until he meets a grown Eli who makes him question everything he thought about himself, we watch as Eli admits truths to himself and explores what he has discovered about himself and we pause with breath held as he struggles with his choice to act on his feelings. Eli and Seth has an exceptional friendship that we have the pleasure of seeing evolve, and when it finally evolves into a relationship it takes our breath away.

I have to question myself as I write this review as to whether it is tainted with the poignancy I feel to be saying goodbye to the Home series, but then I think about the incredible characters, the wonderful dancing of friendship and love, the amusing disastrous weddings, the flashes of painful young love and the solid storyline that draws us deeper into Eli and Seth’s story and I know that Cardeno C. wrote another perfect story and my rating is well deserved.

I recommend this story to those who love brilliant stories that have you smiling and grinning, that leave you aching for the young man who had to wait years to finally get his man, that draws you in as soul-searching is conducted and doubts are examined and a beautiful relationship is fulfilled.

Review: This story is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone. Andrew and Caleb become best friends at fourteen. Their friendship spans for the next twenty years. They are there for each other through family troubles, school, break ups and tragedy and when they both come out as gay they are each other’s firsts. Andrew and Caleb are best friends with benefits, but what happens when their relationship lines blur?

This is a wonderful addition to the Home series where we see the development of a strong friendship that turns into more and settles into something that neither man realizes. Andrew is searching for the one man who will be his everything; he searches for years going through bad relationships, before he settles for what he can get. And when that ends in sadness, he blames himself and feels guilt over his feelings for his best friend. Caleb won’t settle for second best and keeps hunting for the man for him. He has concerns for Andrew and Andrew’s reaction to the loss of his boyfriend, but dragging Andrew from his depression is harder than he thought and both men finally see what they have been missing all along.

Ahhh, Cardeno C. always writes an incredible story and this one is no different. The story of Andrew and Caleb is very sweet and touching and at times frustrating. Both these characters are incredible men. while Caleb is quite happy to wait for the man of his dreams, dating and taking things slow; Andrew is desperate to find his Mr. Right and throws himself into all his relationships wholeheartedly. And, Caleb is always there to pick up the pieces of his heart. In this story, we see a deep and abiding love that spans twenty years. We see two young men grow up and embark on their adult lives side by side. They share everything together, but as close as they are they miss the obvious… their love for each other.

I loved this story and yes, I got frustrated at Andrew for letting himself be treated badly. But, his desperation to have a steady relationship made him take what he could get. Caleb’s patience is amazing. How he didn’t scream at Andrew to man up and put his foot down proved what a great friend he was. I must admit to being amazed that Caleb and Andrew could never see how they truly felt about each other. But, I suppose that they were too close to see it as more than best friends. The sex between them is very hot and sexy and it was wonderful to see that over so many they still fancied each other rotten.

I recommend this to those who love a friend to lovers story, deep abiding love, hot sex, heartache, frustration and a belated happy ending.

Blurb: Ben Forman has been in the closet so long he’s convinced himself he’s actually straight. But his denial train gets derailed when hotshot lawyer Micah Trains walks into his life. Micah is brilliant, funny, and determined… and he just assumes Ben’s gay and starts dating him. Finding himself truly happy for the first time he can remember, Ben doesn’t have the willpower to resist.

Still, life isn’t all rainbows and happily-ever-afters. Ben loves his family, but his parents have been estranged from his brother, Noah, since he came out of the closet. Ben doesn’t want to lose them, but Micah won’t be his dirty little secret forever. Suddenly Ben’s hold on his happiness and his sense of self seems to be slipping. If he’s going to survive with his heart intact, he’ll have to own up to the truth of what he wants and who he is. The trouble is figuring out just what that truth is.

Review: Ben has struggled to keep his feelings under wraps for years.   He’s determined that he is straight and forces himself to date women.   That all changes when he meets Micah.  He can no longer deny the truth to himself… although; he gives it his best shot. Micah falls hard for Ben and after a difficult time between them he learns the truth about Ben’s outbursts and he does what he can to support him.

This is an incredibly addition to the Home Series. Ben faces up to his true self and he realizes that he is so much happier just being honest with himself. He hid the truth about himself away because when his brother Noah came out his parents did not react well.   Since that time his family has been torn in two; with Ben trying to be the perfect son. Ben also faces the truth that many of his pre-conceived notions about being gay were wrong and maybe his parents were wrong in what they have voiced about gays over the years.

Ben is really torn up and a mess inside and it takes a while to sort himself out but when he does he embraces coming out to his family and friends.   It’s not all roses but he expected that before coming out. A wonderfully written story that tugs at your heart-strings as this man finally embraces who he is and not what other people want him to be. The relationship between Ben and Micah has its ups and downs with Ben hiding the truth about his situation from Micah, the truth finally comes out and that’s when Ben realizes he wants Micah more than anything else in the world.

An incredibly story that is charming, loving, witty, humorous, touching and moving.   The storyline is very believable and the plot moves along smoothly. I loved Micah’s family and thought they added a good feeling to the story.  Ben and Noah repairing their relationship as brothers was touching and the final scenes of the book made my eyes fill with tears of happiness for this incredible couple.

I would recommend this to… everyone who wants a story that leaves you with a happy warm heart, a smile on your face and a sheen of tears in your eyes. Get this book, a bottle of wine and curl up on your sofa and enjoy a brilliant story.
